infrastructure is sparse and lignite is more abundant. The Turkish government has granted
corporate tax allowances, customs duty exemptions and VAT exemptions to boost new
development of lignite power plants. The moves have already provided an up tick in development
with a $12bn bilateral agreement struck between Turkey and the UAE for the construction of coal
power plants in early 2013. Lignite power capacity is expected to double by 2020 from its current
10.6GW.
Nuclear power & Renewables – In an effort to increase diversification of energy supply in the
electricity sector Turkey is also developing its first nuclear reactor in partnership with Russia. Long
lead times will limit the competition of nuclear until late into the forecast period, however talks are
already underway to develop a second facility. Up to 4.5GW of nuclear power capacity could be
added by 2020. Turkey has also set a target to produce 30% of its electricity from renewable
sources by 2023. The vast majority of this capacity will come from hydro development, but wind
and solar power additions are also expected to be strong.
4.9.2 Turkish Natural Gas Power Capacity Additions
Gas power capacity addition calculations for Turkey include a mixture of under construction,
planned and anticipated gas fired power facilities up to 2020. New facilities are expected to come
online relatively regularly with a peak of additions coinciding with the added availability of gas from
the TANAP pipeline.

Iran holds the second highest reserves of natural gas in the world behind Russia, and as such has
a vast domestic resource to exploit for electricity production. Over 75% of Iran’s power generation
derives from gas power plants, with the remainder coming from oil and hydropower. The country
has an installed capacity of around 60MW.
Future growth in the Iranian gas to power market will be restrained by the tightening sanctions on
the country hindering economic growth. Iran is capable of engineering and building its own gas
power plants and in the past was among the top producers of gas turbines, thus does not need the
technological input from foreign companies. However, the country relies heavily on revenues from
oil and gas exports to fund government spending. Economic growth is therefore expected to falter
with continued sanctions on the country and thus energy demand growth will be limited to none. In
fact a recent electricity subsidy reorganisation reduced domestic demand in 2012 and added to
negative economic growth of -0.9% in the same year, creating a poor outlook for the future of
electricity generation growth. In fact Iran was able to increase exports of electricity to neighbouring
Armenia, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iraq and Afghanistan, which will likely
provide the only outlet for possible growth while international sanctions remain enforced.

Hitachi is a vast company covering business aspects from IT and communications to major
infrastructure developments. The Power Systems division is the umbrella for the company’s major
power plant developments, which involve thermal, nuclear, solar, hydro and wind generation
systems.
The company is perhaps better known for its nuclear development capabilities and has extensive
references throughout Japan. However, Hitachi is also a major gas turbine and gas power plant
developer, providing some of the most efficient CCGT technology on the market. Their gas turbine
solutions are generally on a smaller scale of between 16.9 and 32 MW.

  • 16. Page 73www.visiongain.com The Natural Gas Power Generation Market 2013-2023 infrastructure is sparse and lignite is more abundant. The Turkish government has granted corporate tax allowances, customs duty exemptions and VAT exemptions to boost new development of lignite power plants. The moves have already provided an up tick in development with a $12bn bilateral agreement struck between Turkey and the UAE for the construction of coal power plants in early 2013. Lignite power capacity is expected to double by 2020 from its current 10.6GW. Nuclear power & Renewables – In an effort to increase diversification of energy supply in the electricity sector Turkey is also developing its first nuclear reactor in partnership with Russia. Long lead times will limit the competition of nuclear until late into the forecast period, however talks are already underway to develop a second facility. Up to 4.5GW of nuclear power capacity could be added by 2020. Turkey has also set a target to produce 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2023. The vast majority of this capacity will come from hydro development, but wind and solar power additions are also expected to be strong. 4.9.2 Turkish Natural Gas Power Capacity Additions Gas power capacity addition calculations for Turkey include a mixture of under construction, planned and anticipated gas fired power facilities up to 2020. New facilities are expected to come online relatively regularly with a peak of additions coinciding with the added availability of gas from the TANAP pipeline. 0 500 1000 1500 2000 2500 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 MW Figure 4.30 Turkish Natural Gas Power Additions 2012-2020 (MW) Source: TEIAS, EMRA

Over 75% of Iran’s power generation derives from gas power plants, with the remainder coming from oil and hydropower. The country has an installed capacity of around 60MW. Future growth in the Iranian gas to power market will be restrained by the tightening sanctions on the country hindering economic growth. Iran is capable of engineering and building its own gas power plants and in the past was among the top producers of gas turbines, thus does not need the technological input from foreign companies. However, the country relies heavily on revenues from oil and gas exports to fund government spending. Economic growth is therefore expected to falter with continued sanctions on the country and thus energy demand growth will be limited to none. In fact a recent electricity subsidy reorganisation reduced domestic demand in 2012 and added to negative economic growth of -0.9% in the same year, creating a poor outlook for the future of electricity generation growth. In fact Iran was able to increase exports of electricity to neighbouring Armenia, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iraq and Afghanistan, which will likely provide the only outlet for possible growth while international sanctions remain enforced. The Power Systems division is the umbrella for the company’s major power plant developments, which involve thermal, nuclear, solar, hydro and wind generation systems. The company is perhaps better known for its nuclear development capabilities and has extensive references throughout Japan. However, Hitachi is also a major gas turbine and gas power plant developer, providing some of the most efficient CCGT technology on the market. Their gas turbine solutions are generally on a smaller scale of between 16.9 and 32 MW.
