14. The fourth industrial revolution is the current and
developing environment in which disruptive
technologies and trends such as the Internet of Things
(IoT), Robotics, Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial
Intelligence (AI) are changing the way we live and work.
15. A disruptive technology is one that displaces
an established technology and shakes up the
industry or a ground-breaking product that
creates a completely new industry.
https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/disruptive-
technology
16. •Email transformed the way we communicate, displaced
letter-writing and disrupted the postal and greeting card
industries.
17. •The personal computer (PC) displaced the typewriter and
drastically changed the way we work and communicate.
19. “The Internet of Things has
the potential to change the
world, just as the Internet did.
Maybe even more so.“
…Kevin Ashton 1999
What is IoT?
“a network of everyday devices, appliances, and
other objects equipped with computer chips and
sensors that can collect and transmit data through
the Internet”

63. Eric’s Guidelines on how to incorporate innovative
techniques in your daily work / information services
• Set a goal: There should be something to that you want to
achieve. Otherwise it is not possible to evaluate and determine of
you are successful.
• Start small: Innovation is change, change is not always easy. Don’t
make it too big when it is your first project.
• Start! Don’t over prepare: At one point you have to begin. Keep
on preparing doesn’t let you learn from experiences (mistakes)
• Find Innovators, Early Adopters: It helps when you have the
support of others. Look around for people who are likely to be
enthusiastic.
• Find knowledge: There will be other is in your organization who
have knowledge you could use. Don’t try to ‘invent’ everything
yourself.
• Communicatie about success: Tell people about innovations that
worked well. Makes it more likely to get support for your next
innovation.
64. Cheryl’s Guidelines on how to incorporate innovative
techniques in your daily work / information services
• Know why you are using technology, tools, techniques.
Set goals, view as project
• Provide value (add high quality content)
• Engage - build relationships/connect with your
community
• Network with industry players @ the forefront of
developing tools & apps
• Stay informed (keep up to date with current trends in
a constantly changing technology landscape) be more
tech savvy than your clients

Libraries what has been the impact of technology on Caribbean Libraries …our response
Libraries are constantly evolving to meet the needs of their diverse communities. Far from being a simple repository of books and media, today’s libraries serve as invaluable resources for everything from data analytics to 3-D printing and beginning lessons in coding.
In 2018 and beyond, it’s critical for the modern library to take in the changing faces of its patrons and respond accordingly. Every demographic is different, but there are countless ways that the modern library can respond to recent trends and offer information and resources that are both innovative and relevant to its users.
Let talk about about technology in present environment 2019, we arein era called industrial revolution in this environment characyerised by what we call disruptive technologies nad trends such as IOT, robotics, VR, Ai..these are also disrupting changing the way we work and live
If in doubt about the pervasiveness of technology in our daily lives let us consider the impact of mobile revolution advent of smartphone
Show of hands if you do not have a cell phone…
It was just over a decade ago when cell phones were primarily used for calling and sending texts. Today, the uses of cell phones run the gamut. Phones do everything from taking high-resolution pictures to watching pixel-perfect videos, browsing the internet to playing graphic-intensive games to monitoring your movements. It’s astonishing at how this small device can handle demanding tasks in addition to fulfilling basic communication needs.
Benefits of course..the advent of smartphones has simplified our lives immensely. People now connect with their loved ones more frequently and easily through video calls and instant messaging services. Tasks, like creating slides, reading emails, and creating documents don’t require a PC anymore.
In a nutshell, smartphone and apps have changed the way we work, communicate and play
Statistics on slide reveal this fact
Align with mobile revolution is the development of apps mainly on Apple and Android platforms. Enable you as users to perform tasks related to productivity, information retrieval banking, education, entertainment and my favorite online shopping
Mobile App market dominated by Amazon Appstore, Apple iOS Store, Google Play, Windows Phone Store
Perform tasks related to productivity, information retrieval, gaming, banking, education, entertainment, online shopping
Available as freemium or purchased at low subscription costs
2015 - customers spent half billion dollars in Apple App Store
Consider another technological innovation: Social media and its impact. Show of hands do not have a social media account…checked it once since we started
Establishing, maintaining, and growing a social media presence is important for libraries. Gregg Dodd, Director of Marketing at Columbus Metropolitan Library, explains the value of a digital strategy clearly, saying, “Our users live in a digital world, so this is an important space to connect with them.”
This library covers a small part of North Netherlands and uses Social Media (Facebook) to get connected to the community. The 8.7K followers is a lot for this area.
Another one is Library The Hague with their face swap posts on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/B1N777iAv50/
Is a nice Social Media campagne.

Environmental monitoring (smart appliances). There are several examples of consumer products, like the Nest thermostat, that illustrate IoT technology for the home. These devices, by using user input of temperature preferences, can learn over time the habits of the inhabitants of a house and their heating and cooling preferences in order to optimize the preferred temperature for when the occupants are home. Nest thermostats can be paired and optimized further from a user’s mobile device. A mobile app gives the homeowners some ability to control and gather insights about the environment of their home.
smart buildings, smart cars, or even smart cities as a larger extension of IoT
• Smart clothing and smart accessories (wearables) can send health data to a central server for monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, and similar information. The data could offer predictive analytics into health monitoring
Goodwin Hall knows where you are
Opened in June 2014, the newly built engineering building is rigged with 241 accelerometer
Data could be used to "program" the building for more efficiency. If the building senses that every person within its walls has gathered on a particular floor in winter, it may consequently heat that floor while reducing the temperature elsewhere, saving on energy costs. If there's a fire, the building may be able to transmit information to firefighters arriving on the scene. Long-term, the building will tell maintenance crews where it needs work.
