1)   Resistance to change is not uncommon
     in small businesses. This can be found
     especially in those who have worked for
     many years or were involved since the
     start of the business.

2)   Resistance to change may stem from:

•    Resistance to content of change

     For example, introducing new technology, process
     or even Customer Relationship Management
     systems can require more or fewer steps by staff.
     Either way, there is reluctance to change from
     known to unknown.

•   Resistance to process of change

    This happens more often when the process of
    arriving at change was not consultative/
    inclusive . This stems from a ‘top-down’
    approach to management, rather than
    consultation that allowed for early buy in and
    ownership of the change. People feel ignored!

3)   Understanding the reason for resistance can
     result in more appropriate crafting/tailoring of
     messages of organisational change.

Reasons for resistance include:

new, fear of the
unknown, uncertainty, inconven
ience, threat to status.

4)   Real change happens in the minds of people
     as they talk to each other, and with you, about
     the effect of change on how they work.

5)   Remember that in general, people do not
     relish change, they find it deeply disturbing
     and threatening.

     They are afraid of the unknown. Your people's
     fear of change is as great as your own fear of
     failure.
