Sign-in sheet going around
Thanks for being here - says a lot about this community
Tonight is about getting all ideas on the table & synthesizing those ideas
Also about building consensus around ideas
How many is this your first Hoosick Rising meeting?
This is our second public meeting, first workshop
Hoosick Rising is at it’s core a community development planning effort intended to identify projects & initiatives that the community can undertake to
Also about engaging new residents and stakeholders to lead initiatives
That’s why it’s so important you’re here tonight
Over the past few months we’ve been conducting interviews, meetings, and data analysis
Present top 3-5 SWOT’s for community as whole
Later ask you to do this for specific content areas, this will set the groundwork for that discussion
WE could list hundreds of things here, but tried to summarize it into 5-key points
Small town living with access to larger urban areas
Private investment – not just investing in a space, investing in a place – thinking beyond the borders of their site - for them to succeed, Hoosick needs to succeed
For the size of the community, have a lot of youth-based education and recreational opportunities – investing in your future -- HAY C 3 and strong public/private schools
Lots of unique, interesting historic and natural amenities – also seem to be working to tie the two together,
Hoosick Rising – Fact that Town and Village are working together, spearheading this effort is a huge strength
No higher ed: Kids heave to leave to go to college/trade school or access other training opportunities
From 2007 to 2014, lost 100 residents in community, likely related to recession --- peak in 1900’s was about double
Losing children/school age kids
Increase 20-30 year olds
Decline mid-career, core workforce 35 to 50 year olds
50+ added residents
Population decline correlates with loss of local employment opportunities
Contributes to continued disinvestment in built environment as demand for commercial space by businesses and residential space declines – less demand for services locally
Challenge: Happened slowly
No higher ed: Kids heave to leave to go to college/trade school or access other training opportunities
- also, higher education institutions spur innovation and creativity
Regional partnerships – combine resources, surrounded by small communities experiencing same challenges, need to work together, pool resources
Artist – up and down the Hudson valley, ties in with Hoosick’s history and some notable current residents
- Entrepreneurs/creators/makers – last meeting we discussed how economy is changing, lines between artists and entrepreneurs are blurring and people with different skill sets are collaborating to pursue startup opportunities, -- that’s why it’s so important for business community to engage with each other frequently
Tax burden – as loss of commercial properties
- Housing may become more inexpensive but taxes will continue to grow
Employer – several large employers, loss = relocation

Approach: about “doing”
Too easy to get stuck planning – moving away from strategic planning to “strategic doing”
Thoughts on a weekend in September?
We will summarize findings/ideas from tonight and get them on Town and Village websites
