2. • The eGreenNet forum is a network for discussions on green economy projects and collaboration. In our first 2016
meeting we singled out our regional circular economy key projects:
o Smart Chemistry Park
o BASTU
o Topinpuisto: the recycling park of the future
o The textile recycling innovation cluster: Textile 2.0
o Smart, sustainable city, the city as an innovation platform.
o Skanssi
o BlueCleantech
o The city of Turku’s renewable energy goals and promotion (pioneering)
• The eGreenNet operations model
o Strong co-operation: solutions are found, no matter who is contacted.
o Students help companies in resource efficiency activities.
• To be developed: clarifying the role of each agent and identifying peak areas of strength.

Southwest Finland
A lot is happening in the area
= naturally, because our whole economic system is at a
turning point
Circular economy is a new economic model in which
materials circulate and value is added to products via
services and intelligent solutions. The Turku area has many
opportunities related to the theme.

5. Turku pursues to have a carbon
neutral circular economy
• The city of Turku has set an goal in its strategy to have an sustainable
growth and to strengthen its competitiveness
• According to the strategy, Turku pursues to be carbon neutral by
2040, which is being achieved with ambitious actions regarding
climate and environment policy.
• Energy-efficient and recource sensible operation mode will be
adjusted to all activities.
• Carbon neutral circular economy is a key theme in business policy (Kh
9.2.2015)
• The progress is supported with projects and development
partnerships.

6. The Growth Pact of Turku
invests in clean solutions
• In the Growth Pact and its preparations, Turku has announced that it
will utilize investments in advancing cleans solutions
• The city group of Turku invests strongly in new clean solutions,
particularly in developing energy and transportation systems in the
urban area.
• The energy reformation of Turku creates jobs, and establishes
renewable energy to be the dominant energy form of the region
• Investments to clean energy 300 MEUR in 2014-2018

9. Blue Cleantech
• Blue Cleantech™ is a knowledge and business area in the marine
industry that creates significantly new maritime growth

10. • Smart Chemistry Park (SCP) is a concrete location for companies, a
growing platform as well as a learning environment in Turku and
elsewhere in Southwest Finland.
• At SCP startups, SMEs, universities, industrial companies and public
agents meet and collaborate to come up with solutions to the
challenges of bioeconomy and circular economy.

11. • In the late summer of 2015, the business incubator Bastu was
launched. It was initiated by entrepreneurs of the Turku area and its
purpose is to build business activities of the sixth wave to the area.
• A part of the three-year collaboration between Sitra and the city of
Turku to promote the circular economy.
• Resource scarcity is a primary driver of the sixth wave, which forces
us to view seemingly familiar things in a whole new way.

12. Topinpuisto
• Topinpuisto = A recycling park of
the future.
• There’s a desire to build to the
Topinpuisto area a business park
and co-operation network, which is
focused on the circular economy.
The goal is a multi-actor park that

chains of the circular economy.

13. • The development of a textile recycling innovation cluster

utilise recycled textiles

14. TRY OUT!
In the TRY OUT! project, an innovation platform with its try-out-environments
is being build in the basis of try-out-culture and collaborative development.
This offers a possibility for experimentations of new ideas in circular
economy and cleantech, icluding business models, mode of operations and
co-operation forms in between different sectors. The most successful ones
remain and go forward to the markets.

15. In addition: ELSU
• The waste plan of South and West Finland by 2020, where is
addressed the material efficiency of building, biodegradable waste,
urban and rural waste as well as ashes and slags among other things.
The mid-assessment of the plan has been made in 2014.

16. In addition: FISS and INKA
research projects
• There are ongoing important processes and projects:
• FISS, which is an ”introduction project” to an industrial symbiosis
database. After this project phase tha database remains as a
useful data bank of industrial co-streams.
• The Smart Research project helps SCP to build collaborative
research partnerships (INKA EAKR).
• A recycled plastic 3D printing laboratory (INKA EAKR) supports
the aim of being pioneer

• The Southwest Finland of circular economy web site is a window for
all activities regarding circular economy in the region. The site
combines together all activities and actors as well as main focuses, in
aim to indicate the significancy and potential of circular economy in
the region.
• The regional road map of circular economy is wished to be linked with
the national road map of Sitra that is in progress (the negotiations are
ongoing)
