This image
shows how the
sebaceous cyst
looks
underneath the
skin.
What is the condition/disease?
● It causes a small round bump to form under the skin. It's
usually on the region above the shoulders.
What are the symptoms?
● Small cysts are typically not painful but large cysts, although
uncommon, can be considerably painful. Large cysts on the
face and neck can cause pressure and pain.
What causes it?
● The causes of the Sebaceous cyst are acne, basal cell nevus,
scratching of skin, surgical wound, and gardner's syndrome.
Is it contagious?
● The sebaceous cyst is not contagious.
Can it be cured? If so and how?
● To cure sebaceous cyst you will need to apply an antifungal
cream directly on top of the infected area and but a bandage if
necessary.
An interesting fact about this condition/disease
• It is usually found on the scalp, face, neck, and back.

What is Molluscum Contagiosum?
What is Mollucscum Contagiosum?
● Contagious skin disease
caused by a virus known as
“pox virus”
● Causes small red bumps on
the body, usually clumped in
one area.
● It can appear anywhere on the
body and it’s most common in
young children under the age
of 15 and those affected by
HIV and AIDS.
What are some of the symptoms
of Molluscum Contagiosum?
● Small red wart like bumps
that have a little dimple on
top.
● They can cause irritation,
itchiness, and mild pain.
● With a weak immune
system, these bumps can
grow very large.
●What causes this disease?
● Caused by a virus known as
“pox virus” that you can get
through touching infected
things.
Is it contagious?
● Yes, it is contagious and it it
can be pretty easy to get.
● You can get it through skin-
to-skin contact, touching
infected gym mats, sexual
contact, and other ways.
Can it be cured? If so, how?
● Yes it can be cured tough
multiple ways.
● Cyrosurgery, freezing it of,
and topical therapy (acids).
● Although it may be gone off
the body, it takes 12-18
months to fully clear out.
Summary of Molluscum Contagiosum
Molluscum contagiosum is a disease that is caused
by a virus that causes small red bumps on the
body, called mollusca. These bumps can be itchy
and cause irritation, and can be contracted by skin-
to-skin contact and sexual contact, therefore it is
contagious. It can be cured through surgery, acids,
and cutting them off, but they stay in the body for
12-18 months after being removed.
This illustration
shows how the
virus builds up
under the skin
which causes the
mollusca to form
on top of the skin.
This shows how the
mollusca can appear on the
face, causing multiple
mollusca in one little
location.
An Interesting Fact
People with HIV and AIDS are some
of the most vulnerable to this
disease because when the disease
enters and attacks the body, the
immune system is too weak to fight
it off and can lead to hundreds of
mollusca in one spot.
3. “Hives” AKA Urticaria or Wheals
Hives are essentially a reaction skin can have to things like allergic
reactions, certain medications and antibiotics, insect stings, and more. It
starts off as an itchy patch that develops into swollen red welts. Those
who have family history of hives or a recent allergic reactions have a
higher risk of getting Hives. Ages 6-60 have a higher risk of developing
hives & if you’re under 6 you will have a lower risk.
Hives are not incurable, and usually go away on
their own. However, self medication is an option.
One way is using a cold compress which dulls the
pain and swelling. Another options using
antihistamines (medicine that inhibits the action of
histamine by blocking it’s receptors) and
corticosteroids, which can be ingested via mouth.

● Diaper Rash is a common form of inflamed skin that usually makes a
baby’s butt red.
● Diaper Rash is a condition that is usually caused by sensitive skin,
irritation from poop and urination, bacterial or yeast infection, or getting
irritated by new diapers, etc.
● Diaper Rash is contagious, so all family members should wash their
hands after changing a babies diaper with antibacterial soap to keep it
from spreading.
● The symptoms of diaper rash is making the skin look red around the
buttox, thighs, genitals, and when the baby is fussing or crying when
washing the diaper area.
● You can treat the rash by using a mild hydrocortisone (steroid) cream,
an antifungal cream (if your baby has a fungal infection),or topical or
oral antibiotics (if your baby has a bacterial infection)
● In the beginning the baby’s butt looks
normal, then it starts to look kind of red and
when it gets more infected it gets more severe.
5. -There are more than 100 types of HPV, warts can grow
anywhere on the body, common warts grow most often on
hand, plantar warts grow on the soles of the feet.
-Warts is the skin growth disease
caused by some types of the virus
called the human papillomavirus(HPV).
-The virus causes the top layer of skin
to grow rapidly, forming a wart. Most
warts go away on their own within
months or years.
-Warts can spread by direct
contact with HPV,can infect
other people by sharing
personal items.You can infect
yourself by touching the
Wart then touching other part
of your body.
-You can cure by surgery, freeze it,
using medicine on it, or get a shot of
medicine in it.

6. Wart virus under a microscope
(Verruca Vulgaris)
● Warts are contagious, it
depend on person
immune system. You can
get it from someone who
carry HPV and sharing
their stuff with you.In
addition, they often affect
just one part of the body,
but they can spread to
other areas by picking
them.
What are Warts?
● Warts caused by virus called the human papillomavirus (HPV).
● HPV infects the top layer of skin, epidermis, usually entering the body in an area of broken skin.
The virus causes the top layer of skin to grow rapidly, forming a wart.
● Warts are typically small, rough, hard and can have pus. They can grow everywhere in the body
but typically on the bottom of the feet. They can be itchy and painful. There is no cure for HPV.
Most warts clear the infection on their own within months or years.

● Acne is a condition where the
glands in the face are inflamed or
infected.
● Some causes of acne are oil
production, dead skin cells,
clogged pores and bacteria.
● Two types of acne are mild acne
and severe acne.
● Symptoms of mild acne are
whiteheads, blackheads and
pimples.
● Symptoms of severe acne are
papules, pustules and cyst.
● Acne is not contagious, it has p.
Acne bacteria but cannot spread
like bacterial infections.
● There is no cures for acne but
there are treatments that could
prevent acne from reoccurring.
● About 80% of all people will have
outbreaks of acne at some points
of their lives.
● Acne is more common in teens
and young adults.
● Picking and squeezing at acne can
make it worse.

8. Eczema
A skin disease Causes itchy skin with rashes on places including the face, elbows, knees, arms, legs, hands, and
feet
Symptoms include Itching ( may be severe) red, brownish patches, small raised bumps, thick, cracked, dry skin,
and swollen skin from scratching
Raised bumps may release pus/ fluids when scratched
Not contagious
Common in children, can occur at any age
Chronic ( long lasting) flares at certain times but goes away fast, soon to reappear
No cure has been found
Also known as Atopic Dermatitis
Self treatment and self care can help prevent or reduce outbreaks
Likely caused by genetics and environmental factors
People with eczema may have asthma or hay fevers
Frequently occurs with allergic rhinitis (allergic reactions) which explains how eczema and asthma are connected

9. PsoriasisPsoriasis is a
condition in
which skin cells
build up and
form scales and
itchy, dry
patches
By:Kameya Turner, Isabella I, Kelis K
Some of the
symptoms are
rashes,
dryness,
flakiness,
small bumps,
and redness.
Treatments for Psoriasis
include; Photodynamic
therapy, taking medicine,
self care, and seeing
specialists for the right
advice.
The skin cells pile up on the surface of the
skin causing patches of psoriasis to
appear. You cannot get psoriasis from
touching someone who has it. To get
psoriasis, a person must inherit the genes
that causes it.
Medicine:steroids, vitamin A
derivative, anti-inflammatory,
immunosuppressive drug, and
vitamin.
Specialists:Rheumatologist, Primary
care provider, and a Dermatologist.
Psoriasis is not
currently curable.
However it can go to
remission and show
no signs of disease
Ages affected mostly is
19-60+ but it psoriasis
can start as early as
birth.
10. Scalp Psoriasis
-Scalp Psoriasis is a common skin disorder that
forms these reddish, dry, flaky patches ( a spreadable rash) that can show up in one
Area of the skin or in several places
- Symptoms of Scalp Psoriasis: Scaly, red, bumpy patches,
dandruff-like flaking. Dry scalp, itching, burning/soreness and hairloss
- Scalp Psoriasis forms when a person has faulty signals
that are telling the skin too grown too quickly, it can be genetic ,
or also come from environmental factors
- Even being that Scalp Psoriasis can be a bit stubborn while trying to get rid of . People use medicated shampoos or
oils, antibiotics,
scale softeners, injections, and light treatments.
11. Impetigo
● A bacterial skin infection
● Red sores around nose and mouth or other places that can develop to
yellow-brown crust, itching, blisters
● Is contagious by sharing towels and other hygeines
● Caused by streptococcus or staphylococcus (bacteria)
● Can be treated with antibiotics
● It most commonly affects children

12. Decubitus Ulcers
May, Jenny, Alaizha
Also known as: pressure ulcers or
bedsores
-Decubitus ulcers are open wounds
caused by pressure. It’s common
amongst seniors, those with
disabilities or those with fragile skin.
-Symptoms are skin discoloration,
pain in the area, open wound, skin
that does not respond to touch and if
it has a different texture than
surround skin. Long periods of
pressure causes these ulcers
because it makes skin break down.
-To treat a pressure, depending on
the stage it may require medication,
surgery or therapy.
Places most vulnerable to
decubitus ulcers
Four Stages of Bedsores
● Common, There
are more than
200,000 cases
yearly. It is not
contagious.
● Areas by bone,
cartilage, hips,
heels and the
tailbone are most
vulnerable.
13. Cold Sores
Kenny Le
Celeste Zarate
Hung Duong
Some Symptoms are:
- Tingling and itching
- Blistering
- Oozing and crusting
- Drooling (only in
children)
- Sore throat
- A cutting and burning
sensation
Symptoms during outbreaks:
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Fever
- Painful eroded gums
How is it caused/Is it
contagious?
It’s caused by the herpes simplex
virus. Cold sores are highly
contagious and can be spread by
having physical contact before or
during an outbreak.
Is there a cure or prevention?
Currently there is not a cure or
prevention for cold sores.
However, there are treatments
for their reducing the frequency
and duration of cold sores, such
as pills and skin cream.
Interesting facts:
Outbreaks of cold sores will vary
from person to person. Some
people may have one outbreak and
no recurrence, some might only
have two or three each year, and
others might carry the virus and
never have an outbreak. Cold
sores can usually heal within two
to four weeks without leaving a
scar.
Some things that might
trigger an outbreak
might include:
- Exposure to sunlight
- Stress or being tired
- Cold or the flu
- Damage on the lips
- Pregnancy or hormonal
changes

Definition: Causes skin to have less melanin. Resulting in patches of lighter skin in various areas, some people develop much more than
a patch of skin. Usually vitiligo just affects skin, but can develop anywhere there is melanin.
Symptoms: skin loss, loss of color in our tissues, and loss of color in the first layer of our eyeballs. It can also affect any part of the body
such as mouth, hair and eyes but it might only affect dark colors.
Is it contagious?: Vitiligo is not contagious, nor is it life-threatening but it can change a person's life by making their esteem lower
causing them to isolate themselves overall developing depression. Most people of the vitiligo community have the disease for life and
learn how to cope with these issues.
Is it curable : vitiligo is curable by treatment called steroids. It might take 2+ years to regain pigment but it
doesn’t mean that the white patches are all going to be gone and also you could use cosmetics or tattooing.
Fun fact: Did you know that people with this disease can make an art out of their skin by using tattoos
around their skin where the pigment differentiates to make the patterns on their skin pop out.
Some people with this disease even become models.
15. Tinea
Tinea is a highly contagious skin infection that is caused by fungi
called dermatophytes including Trichophyton, Microsporum, and
Arthrospores. Some of the symptoms are itchiness, red skin rashes, cracked
skin and blistering. Treatment of Tinea infections can vary from person to
person but, many are treated with antifungal medication. For most corporis,
cruris, and pedis infections, topical agents can be used as treatment. Tinea is
spread by skin to skin contact and by touching contaminated surfaces.

Due to its appearance,
Tinea is also often
called ringworm, which
means a fungus skin
infection.

16. Scars
A scar is the body’s natural way of healing and replacing lost or damaged skin. Scars are
formed when the dermis is damaged. The body forms new collagen fibers, a natural protein
occurring in the body to mend the damage, creating a scar. Scars are not contagious, they cannot
be passed around.
● What causes scars is is when scars form the dermis (deep, thick layers of the skin) is
damaged. The body forms new collagen fibers (a naturally occurring protein in the body) to
mend the damage, resulting a scar.
● If you get an scar you would have a certain type of mark on your body and it would happen
to be an itchy or lumpy area on your skin and it could most likely grow larger if it is
messed with or touched a lot, but could be cured over time and it would go away. Scars can
be cured with certain amount of treatment.
● One interesting fact about scars is that a scar is a result of the body’s natural trauma to the
skin
17. Alopecia
Chawnyce Nolen
Limbert Tavarez
Vivian Nguyen
Alopecia is an immune disorder, which causes hair loss. The symptoms include
hair falling out in round patches, usually a few centimeters on the scalp, but it can be
anywhere else on the body. It is caused, when your immune system attacks your
hair follicles and damages to it are permanent. Alopecia is a genetic disease,
therefore it is not contagious at all. Currently, there are no cures, but there are
treatments to help regrow hair. Treatments include corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory
drug), topical immunotherapy (which alters the immune response), & minoxidil .
There are about 10 different types of alopecia and can affect everyone including
children, not just older men.
This picture shows the most
common type of alopecia which is
alopecia areata,.
This picture shows
alopecia totalis in
children.
Shows that
alopecia can
also be found
in women.
18. Alopecia
Alopecia is a type of hair loss that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks
hair follicles which is where the growth of hair begins.
Symptoms: scars on scalp, sudden hair loss, nails become rough and not shiny,
patches of bald spot
Causes: family history of autoimmune disorder
(type 1 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis)
Contagious: Not contagious
Curable: no but it may be treated through certain medications like Corticosteroids (anti-
inflammatory drug used for autoimmune diseases) and this helps the hair grow back
more quickly and prevent hair loss in the future
Interesting Facts: Common autoimmune skin disease, affects 6.8 million people, often
appear during childhood,

BLISTERS
This picture illustrates the 5 blister stages.
Blisters are fluid from deep within the layers of the skin that builds
up in pockets. There are many reasons as to how or why blisters are
created. Majority of the time blisters are caused by friction that
causes the Epidermis to lift slightly from the Dermis causing fluid
to fill up the pocket. Another thing that can cause blisters are burns.
Symptoms may include pain, redness, itching and/or fluid-filled
raised bubble. Blisters are not contagious, but some symptoms of
the STD Herpes are blisters and Herpes is contagious.
Blisters don’t usually need treatment and the majority of
the time heal on their own. If a blister gets irritating there
are ways to relieve pain or take care of it as it heals on its
own. If the blister is small you can cover it up with a
bandage so it doesn’t bother you and may relieve some
discomfort. If the blister if filled with fluid you may use a
needle and drain it the correct way. One fact about blisters
is, there is a tree called the Manchineel Tree which
produces a poisonous sap that causes blisters to whoever
touches it. Also people have attempted to burn the tree
down and have been know to become blind from the
smoke.
This picture illustrates a blister with fluid underneath the
Epidermis.
