INTRODUCTION :
 Despite the collapse of the Internet bubble at the beginning of the 21 century, the
demand for information technologies did not slow down. In the USA, the Internet
penetration rate, nearly null 10 years ago, was about 68.1% in June 2005 [1] and 40.9
million American lines reach the Net via a broadband connection .
 In a similar way, mobile phones represent a real social phenomenon, as they now rival
landline phones in number.
 The value of global mobile business reached $414 billion in revenue in 2003, a tenfold
increase in the decade since 1993, while over the same period the overall
telecommunications sector grew by an average of 8.8% to reach $1.1 trillion.
 According to a recent study published by Infomedia Telecoms & Media, the number of
cell phone subscribers globally reached over 2 billion by the end of 2005, about 30%
of the world population, and is predicted to rise to 3.96 billion by 2011 .
What Is Laser & What About Broadband ?
LASER
 Laser is a powerful source of light having extraordinary properties which are not found in the
normal light sources like tungsten lamps, mercury lamps, etc. The unique property of laser is
that its light waves travel very long distances with e very little divergence.
 In case of a conventional e source of light, the light is emitted in a jumble of e separate waves
that cancel each other at random and hence can travel very short distances only. An analogy
can be made with a situation where a large number of pebbles are thrown It into a pool at the
same time.
BROADBAND
 It is a high-capacity transmission technique using a wide range of frequencies, which enables a
large number of messages to be communicated simultaneously.
 Broadband Internet service truly is the most used form of Internet access because of its high
access speeds; it is offered in four different forms, DSL (or Digital Subscriber Line), also fiber-
optic, cable, and satellite. The old Dial-up connection is the only non-broadband internet
service available, and even though it is cheaper, most Internet users are moving towards the
faster broadband Internet connection.
ROLEOFNASAINLASERBROADBAND :
 NASA introduced a process of hosting in a space through laser
communication relay. Laser broadband from NASA presents a terminal
payload to aboard a Loral satellite that will be launched in 2016.
 It will be the commercial satellite that provides size, power system and
location to implement the space laser communication.
 Through this technology data rate potential increases to 100 times higher
than the traditional way of radio frequency that have much less power and
mass.
NEED OF LASER BROADBAND :
 Laser broadband is a mission that is based on one of the several flight
demonstrations for the development. It introduced the potential to provide
near term products, infuse high impact and tangibility to the NASA future.
 The technology will be demonstrated with payload by NASA that will be
stationed above the equator at heights from the Loral spacecraft. It will be the
prime location of the satellite to communicate with other satellites and ground
stations.
 By this technology NASA is focusing to the commercial communication of the
satellite to gain the access to the space faster as well as at the lower cost. It
will be highly beneficial in future like using the broadband which is faster than
normal Broadband services on the internet.
WORKING OF LASER IN BROADBAND :
FIBER OPTIC COMMUNICATION :
 The idea to use guided light for data transmission appeared 40 years ago with the
invention of the laser. Over the past few years, the field of fiber optics
communications has experienced tremendous growth. This impressive
development is due to the crucial breakthroughs that have been achieved in
several key domains.
 The objective of this chapter is to introduce the fundamentals of optical fibers that
constitute the key element of today’s optical networks. Then, we will focus on two
specific technological advances: optical amplifiers and lasers. Finally, an
overview of different optical pulse generation techniques is provided.

 For the next generation of wireless communication, this is great
opportunity to double up the bandwidhth and the technology.
 This is the way to use a phone would have more ability to download
more data with afaster speed.
 This technology has a wide range of applications including mobile
backhaul,data center connectivity,replacement of legacy microwave
radios & back-up links .
LIMITATIONS :
 Need to kept the laser modem with you always.
 Need to synchronise all the acceptance protocol 1st time of
use.
ADVANTAGES :
 Getiing of high speed Internet access upto 20 times faster.
 Low efficiency in electricity.
 It can use anywhere ,any place .
 More secure & attacking of malicious programs are less.
CONCLUSION :
 When NASA's Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration (LLCD) begins
operation aboard the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer
(LADEE) mission managed by NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field,
Calif., it will attempt to show two-way laser communication beyond Earth is
possible, expanding the possibility of transmitting huge amounts of data.
 This new ability could one day allow for 3-D High Definition video
transmissions in deep space to become routine.
 The LADEE spacecraft will take 30 days to reach the moon because of its
flight path. LLCD will begin operations shortly after arrival into lunar orbit
and continue for 30 days afterward

In the USA, the Internet penetration rate, nearly null 10 years ago, was about 68.1% in June 2005 [1] and 40.9 million American lines reach the Net via a broadband connection .  In a similar way, mobile phones represent a real social phenomenon, as they now rival landline phones in number.  The value of global mobile business reached $414 billion in revenue in 2003, a tenfold increase in the decade since 1993, while over the same period the overall telecommunications sector grew by an average of 8.8% to reach $1.1 trillion.  According to a recent study published by Infomedia Telecoms & Media, the number of cell phone subscribers globally reached over 2 billion by the end of 2005, about 30% of the world population, and is predicted to rise to 3.96 billion by 2011 .
  • 4. What Is Laser & What About Broadband ? LASER  Laser is a powerful source of light having extraordinary properties which are not found in the normal light sources like tungsten lamps, mercury lamps, etc. The unique property of laser is that its light waves travel very long distances with e very little divergence.  In case of a conventional e source of light, the light is emitted in a jumble of e separate waves that cancel each other at random and hence can travel very short distances only. An analogy can be made with a situation where a large number of pebbles are thrown It into a pool at the same time. BROADBAND  It is a high-capacity transmission technique using a wide range of frequencies, which enables a large number of messages to be communicated simultaneously.  Broadband Internet service truly is the most used form of Internet access because of its high access speeds; it is offered in four different forms, DSL (or Digital Subscriber Line), also fiber- optic, cable, and satellite. The old Dial-up connection is the only non-broadband internet service available, and even though it is cheaper, most Internet users are moving towards the faster broadband Internet connection.
  • 5. ROLEOFNASAINLASERBROADBAND :  NASA introduced a process of hosting in a space through laser communication relay. Laser broadband from NASA presents a terminal payload to aboard a Loral satellite that will be launched in 2016.  It will be the commercial satellite that provides size, power system and location to implement the space laser communication.  Through this technology data rate potential increases to 100 times higher than the traditional way of radio frequency that have much less power and mass.
  • 6. NEED OF LASER BROADBAND :  Laser broadband is a mission that is based on one of the several flight demonstrations for the development. It introduced the potential to provide near term products, infuse high impact and tangibility to the NASA future.  The technology will be demonstrated with payload by NASA that will be stationed above the equator at heights from the Loral spacecraft. It will be the prime location of the satellite to communicate with other satellites and ground stations.  By this technology NASA is focusing to the commercial communication of the satellite to gain the access to the space faster as well as at the lower cost. It will be highly beneficial in future like using the broadband which is faster than normal Broadband services on the internet.

Over the past few years, the field of fiber optics communications has experienced tremendous growth. This impressive development is due to the crucial breakthroughs that have been achieved in several key domains.  The objective of this chapter is to introduce the fundamentals of optical fibers that constitute the key element of today’s optical networks. Then, we will focus on two specific technological advances: optical amplifiers and lasers. Finally, an overview of different optical pulse generation techniques is provided.

FUTUREUSES :  For the next generation of wireless communication, this is great opportunity to double up the bandwidhth and the technology.  This is the way to use a phone would have more ability to download more data with afaster speed.  This technology has a wide range of applications including mobile backhaul,data center connectivity,replacement of legacy microwave radios & back-up links .
  • 13. LIMITATIONS :  Need to kept the laser modem with you always.  Need to synchronise all the acceptance protocol 1st time of use.
  • 14. ADVANTAGES :  Getiing of high speed Internet access upto 20 times faster.  Low efficiency in electricity.  It can use anywhere ,any place .  More secure & attacking of malicious programs are less.

CONCLUSION :  When NASA's Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration (LLCD) begins operation aboard the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) mission managed by NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., it will attempt to show two-way laser communication beyond Earth is possible, expanding the possibility of transmitting huge amounts of data.  This new ability could one day allow for 3-D High Definition video transmissions in deep space to become routine.  The LADEE spacecraft will take 30 days to reach the moon because of its flight path. LLCD will begin operations shortly after arrival into lunar orbit and continue for 30 days afterward
