CONCLUSION BY THE MINISTRY
“Child abuse is shrouded in secrecy and there is a
conspiracy of silence around the entire subject. In fact there
is a well entrenched belief that there is no child abuse in
India and certainly there is no sexual abuse in the country.
Further, certain kinds of traditional practices that are
accepted across the country, knowingly or un-knowingly
amount to child abuse. Existing socio-economic conditions
also render some children vulnerable and more at risk to
abuse, exploitation and neglect. It is about time that we
recognize this and take remedial measures. Lack of
empirical evidence and qualitative information on the
dimensions of child abuse and neglect makes it difficult to
address the issue in a comprehensive manner.”
All data are from the website of ministry of women and children
EFFECTS
Most children quietly suffer, and don’t talk about
Sexual Abuse, But we need to TALK about it, so
that WE can PREVENT IT and CURE IT.
Child Sexual Abuse affects the child negatively, causing :
• Shame, guilt & anger • Fear, shock and confusion
• Constant illnesses • Future exploitative relationships
• Social withdrawal • Inappropriate sexualised behaviour
RULES FOR PERSONAL SAFETY TO BE TAUGHT
TO CHILDREN
 RULE NO. 1
It is NEVER all right for someone to TOUCH, LOOK or
TALK about one’s private body parts except to keep them
clean and healthy. It is never alright for someone older or
bigger to ask the child to TOUCH, LOOK or TALK about
their private body parts.
 RULE NO. 2
If someone tries to break this rule, say “NO” and RUN
AWAY.
 RULE NO. 3
TELL someone you trust and keep telling untill you get the
necessary help.
WAYS OF HEALING
 Sometimes, despite our best efforts, our
children become victims of sexual abuse. We
need to help the children through this by the
following:
 Step 1
Recognizing that the child has been sexually
abused.
 Step 2
Helping the child talk about this experience.
 Step 3
Seeking professional support to help the child
heal.
Some of the NGO’s working in this field to reduce the frequency of abuse
are :
1. Arpan – www.arpan.org.in
2. Childline ( A part of snehalaya )
3. Tulir
4. Save the children
A VIDEO BY ARPAN ( NATION WIDE NGO WORKING AGAINST
CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE ).
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
WE CAN :
• Aware our parents , siblings to take care of themselves in the
right way.
• Aware our colony/residence/school through seminars and
discussions.
• Effectively take part in awareness campaigns by the
nationally recognised NGO’s.
• Help any child in distress by dialing childline/police or
providing the necessary help to the child.
• Teach people around us to ACCEPT that child abuse exists
around us and we need to act against it.
• Donate or collect funds for NGO’s to do their good work .
• Organise workshops to equipt children and parents with the
necessary details and ways to prevent child abuse.
