2. What Is The Conscious Mind?
The conscious mind is the analytical part or the thinking part of the mind. When you woke
up this morning you consciously decided which out fit to wear, what to eat and which route
to drive to work depending on the traffic. It is also the part of the mind that stores all of
your emotions and therefore is also commonly referred to as the ego. Fear, hatred, love,
sadness, confusion, jealousy, pride, anxiety and many other emotions lie within the
conscious part of our mind. It is known as the lesser part of the mind, making up a very
small percentage of the mind.
As you can see it is the decision making part of the mind. Think about all the decisions you
make on a daily basis or that you have made in life. You chose whether you would go to
university or college and if you did, you chose which school to attend, which subjects to
study and which jobs you would apply for. These are all conscious decisions.
The conscious mind is also the gatekeeper or security guard of the mind. It’s the
protector. If I were to tell you something that did not match your belief system then the
conscious mind would step in, think, analyze and then choose to accept or dismiss the
information based on your beliefs, which remember are held in the subconscious mind.
This is where we run into problems because the conscious mind will sometimes make
decisions based on your subconscious beliefs. If the subconscious mind holds a lot of
negative beliefs then no matter how much the conscious mind tries to accept certain
information, it will act according to the subconscious belief.
It serves a very important function, but the problem is we try to assign the conscious mind
tasks that should be assigned to the subconscious mind. This creates numerous problems in
our lives which we will discuss in detail in other articles.
Einstein knew this all to well when he wrote, “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the
rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and
has forgotten the gift.”
