The Road to Emmaus
13 Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called
Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked together of
all these things which had happened. 15 So it was, while they conversed and
reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes
were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
17 And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one
another as you walk and are sad?”
18 Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You
the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which
happened there in these days?”
19 And He said to them, “What things?”
So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, Who was a
Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how the
chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and
crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that it was He Who was going to redeem
Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things
happened. 22 Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb
early, astonished us. 23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that
they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 And certain of
those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had
said; but Him they did not see.”
25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that
the prophets have spoken! 26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things
and to enter into His glory?” 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He
expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
The Disciples’ Eyes Opened
28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated
that He would have gone farther. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide
with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay
with them.
30 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread,
blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and
they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.

32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked
with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose
up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those
who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and
has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened
on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.

Since Emmaus is seven miles west of Jerusalem, these two men were walking
towards the sunset.
The sun was sinking on their world, but in God’s world...
Light always follows darkness
The Christian is a person who walks not towards the sunset but towards the
sunrise.
The children of Israel journeyed in the wilderness towards the rising sun.
(Num 21:11.)

11 And they journeyed from Oboth and camped at Ije Abarim, in the wilderness
which is east of Moab, toward the sunrise.

Genesis 1:5 NKJV
5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening
and the morning were the first day. (not morning, then evening)
In the Jewish tradition, days follow this pattern of night first, then day.
Still today, practicing Jews observe the Sabbath beginning on sunset of Friday
until sunset on Saturday.

The Christian goes onwards, not to a night which falls, but to a dawn which
breaks—and that is what, in their sorrow and their disappointment, the two on
the road to Emmaus had not realized.
On the road to Emmaus the Lord joined these two disciples who were talking
about Him.
They had not seen the Lord, and candidly, they did not believe that He had risen
from the dead.
They did not believe that the One Who had joined them on the road was the
resurrected Christ.
To begin with, they were not looking for Him at all.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 NKJV
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the
righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all
who have loved His appearing.

The Crown of Righteousness
We inherit this crown through the righteousness of Christ which is what gives us a
right to it, and without which it cannot be obtained.

This crown of righteousness is not for those who depend upon their own sense of
righteousness or of their own works.

To love His appearing means to live in the light of His coming, to behave as if He
were coming today.
Thus, to love His appearing means to live in moral purity. (see 1 John 3)
To love His appearing means to stay disentangled from the things of this life.
(see Colossians 3)

To love His appearing means to serve God's people, giving them "food in due
season“. (see Matthew 24)

Matthew 24:45-47 NKJV
45 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his Master made ruler over His
household, to give them food in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his
Master, when he comes, will find so doing. 47 Assuredly, I say to you that He will
make him ruler over all his goods.
The Lord pronounces a special blessing on those who are serving His people
when He comes back.
It means that we won't do anything that we would not want to be found doing
when He appears.
If we are really walking with the Lord today and living in the center of His will, it
would mean carrying on as usual.
• If, however, we are living for self, then it would require some revolutionary
changes.
To love His appearing does not mean to just sit on the sofa and have kind
thoughts about the Savior's return.
• The crown of righteousness is reserved for those of us who love it enough
to allow the Truth to mold our lives into action!
These two disciples were experiencing a lack of faith.
"Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God“. (Romans 10:17)
This explains why Jesus opened the Word to these two men as the three of them
walked to Emmaus. (not His wounds)

Their real problem was not in their heads but in their hearts (Luke 24:25 and 32,
and note v. 38).

What they needed was a fresh understanding of the Word of God, and Jesus
gave that understanding to them.

He opened the Scriptures and He opened their eyes - they realized that
Jesus was not only alive but right there with them!

What was their basic problem?
Unbelief!
They did not believe all that the prophets had written about the Messiah. (verse
25)
That was the problem with most of the Jews in that day: they saw Messiah as a
conquering Redeemer, but they did not see Him as a Suffering Servant.

As they read the Old Testament, they saw the glory but not the suffering, the
crown but not the cross.
• The teachers in that day were not unlike some of the "success preachers"
today, blind to the total message of the Bible.
Imagine the greatest Teacher explaining the greatest themes from the greatest
Book and bringing the greatest blessings to men's lives.

The key to understanding the Bible is to see Jesus Christ on every page.
He did not teach them only doctrine or prophecy; He taught "the things
concerning Himself' (Luke 24:27).
Jesus, Peter, and Paul all quoted or referred to such Old Testament passages as:
Gen 22:8, 14;
Psalm 16:8-11;
Psalm 22;
Isaiah 53; and
Hosea 6:2.
The more time there is between the prediction (OT) and when the event occurs
(NT), the more amazing it is, the more impressed we are.

Psalm 22 was written by King David 1,000 years before it took place.
It was written 500 years before the Romans had perfected crucifixion.

The Psalms were not numbered in Jesus’ day so the way they referred to a Psalm
was by the first line of that Psalm.

v. 16 -- His hands and feet pierced; Matt. 27:35
v. 17 -- People staring at Him; Luke 23:35
v. 18 -- Gambling for His garments; John 19:23-24
Over and over again, either directly or indirectly, literally or in figures of speech,
the Old Testament foretold Jesus' death (Psalm 22), burial (Psalm 16), and
resurrection (Isaiah 11).

No Jew who believed and understood the Scriptures should have been surprised
that the Messiah was ordained to die, be buried, and then resurrected.

18 Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You
the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which
happened there in these days?”
Tradition has it (and it is possible) that Cleopas - one of these sad, cynical
disciples – was the brother of Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary.

That would make him Jesus’ uncle – Uncle Cleo!

Cleopas’ wife may have been Mary, “the wife of Cleopas who stood at the foot
of the Cross” (John 19:25) and she was the same Mary that was the mother of
James the Lesser and Jude.
Cleopas’ companion on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24 may have been his wife.

Cleopas of Emmaus, would also have been the grandfather of the sons of
Zebedee.
He most likely became a martyr in the very home in which he broke bread with
Jesus.
Cleopas’ son, Simon, the cousin of Jesus and James, was the leader who
replaced James (after James was martyred) over the Jerusalem congregation.
Cleopas is a perfect example of a trend in the Gospels.
The people who are named in the Bible are treated so for a very important
reason.
The only consistent answer that explains why some are named and some are
not is that the named characters were known to the evangelists as eyewitnesses.
• They lived and told their story of encountering Jesus again and again.

Cleopas is one example of a person of great importance in the Jesus movement
after the events the Gospels narrate.
He is a rare case of someone we know from later historical records as well.
The fact that he is named and not the other disciple illustrates this truth.
• The only plausible reason the other disciple is not named is that Luke did
not have a record of his story or that he was not generally known
afterward as one of the eyewitnesses.
Cleopas apparently was well known.

For the next two hours this strange man walked Cleopas and his friend through
the entire Scriptures and explained all the references to the Christ.

On and on He went through the Scriptures showing a whole stream of ancient
anticipations that had found their answer and fulfillment.
Jesus was that Prophet like unto Moses. (Deut 18:15, 18 and Acts 3:22)

15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from
your brethren. Him you shall hear,

Deuteronomy 18:18 NKJV
18 I will raise up for them a Prophet like you (Moses) from among their brethren,
and will put My words in His mouth (Jesus), and He shall speak to them all that I
command Him.
Acts 3:18 NKJV
18 But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the
Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.
Acts 3:22 NKJV
22 For Moses truly said to the fathers, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a
Prophet like me from your brethren.
Acts3:24 NKJV
24 Yes, and all the prophets, from Samuel and those who follow, as many as have
spoken, have also foretold these days.
But He was also the deliverer Joshua.
And He was Aaron the priest who offered sacrifice.
Indeed, He was innocent Isaac who was offered by Father Abraham in sacrifice.
He was the sacrificial lambs which for centuries had been offered in hopes of
atonement.
He was David the King.
He was Noah by whom deliverance was brought to those who went with him in
the ark.
He was Jonah who was--mark it--three days in the fish's belly.

In the Old Testament is the New Testament concealed.
In the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed.

Jesus' execution was about the only thing people were talking about in
Jerusalem that week.
It had been the tragic climax to a week of controversy, confrontation, and
political intrigue.
For the next two hours this strange man walked Cleopas and his friend through
the entire Scriptures and explained all the references to the Christ.

And as He did, the fire of their faith that had died out on Golgotha came back to
life (resurrection) and burned with that familiar hope, the hope that Jesus was
indeed the Christ.
Could it really be true?
Jesus resurrected?
Who was this Man Who so beautifully made sense of everything that had
happened, and yet at first had seemed clueless?
There was something about Him.

Why do you suppose these two men were "kept from recognizing" Jesus for
hours (v. 16)?
The clue is in verse 25 where Jesus called them "foolish" and "slow of heart to
believe" the Scriptures.
Their outward inability to recognize Jesus mirrored their inward unbelief of what
the Scriptures revealed about Him.
Now, Jesus fully intended to help them see.
But notice the priority of Jesus' revelation: before He opened their physical eyes,
He purposed to open their heart-eyes.
Why?
• Because it was of utmost importance that they "walk by faith, not by sight"
(2 Corinthians 5:7).
2 Corinthians 5:6-8 NKJV
6 So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we
are absent from the Lord. 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident,
yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the
Lord.
Jesus knew that between His resurrection and the full establishment of His
kingdom would be the church age (2,000 years).
His ascension was nearing.
That meant these two men, all the other witnesses of the resurrection, and every
generation of believers to come after (that would be us) would not have His
bodily presence for proof or guidance.
They would have to rely on His "living and active" Word (Hebrews 4:12) to "light
their path" (Psalm 119:105).
Post-ascension, Jesus would be seen through the inerrant testimony recorded in
the Scriptures and the testimony of followers whose heart-eyes were opened.
Revelation 12:11 NKJV
11 And they overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of
their testimony,

When God ordains things to happen contrary to our expectations (like Cleopas
not expecting Jesus to die), those are times when we are tempted to doubt His
word—lose faith—and as a result lose sight of Him.
But not being able to see Him doesn't mean that He isn't there walking with us,
although we may not recognize Him.
• Those are not the times to neglect the Word, rather, those are the times to
spend hours looking into the Word.
Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must
believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
That is where we will begin to recover our sight.

Luke 24:19 NKJV
19 And He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him, “The things
concerning Jesus of Nazareth, Who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word
before God and all the people,

Did you notice what they said?
They said that He "was a Prophet."
They thought He was dead because they did not believe that He had come
back from the dead.
Luke 24:21 NKJV
21 But we were hoping that it was He Who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed,
besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.
These men were saying that they had hoped Jesus Christ was the Prophet that
would redeem Israel, but now it was too late.
He was dead and they did not have much faith in what this Prophet had said -
you can be sure of that.
This passage tells us of the ability of Jesus to make sense of things.
The whole situation seemed to these two men to have no explanation - their
hopes and dreams had been shattered.
There is all the poignant, wistful, bewildered regret in the world in their sorrowing
words, "We were hoping that He was the One Who was going to rescue Israel."
• These were the words of men whose hopes were dead and buried.
Death to a vision.
Then Jesus came and talked with them, and the meaning of life became clear
and the darkness became light.
It is only in Jesus that, even in the bewildering times, we learn what life means.

Luke 24:22-23 NKJV
22 Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early,
astonished us. 23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they
had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive!
These men did not believe the report of the women nor did they believe the
tomb was empty so you can see how much unbelief there was in the
Resurrection at this time.
• But there is a little light that breaks upon the thinking of these two men.
Luke 24:24 NKJV
24 And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the
women had said; but Him they did not see.”
Just as it seemed their faith ballooned up, they put a pin in it -- "but they did not
see Him."
They did not know what had happened, but somehow the body had been taken
away.
They were not prepared to explain what had taken place, but the fact remained
that no one had seen the Lord.

Luke 24:25 NKJV
25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that
the prophets have spoken!
This is a very important section.
The Lord, in speaking about His resurrection, did not show them the prints of the
nails in His hands to prove it.
He referred them to the Scriptures rather than to the nail prints.

He told them, "You should have believed what the prophets said."
• It is well to note the Lord's attitude toward the Bible.
The day in which we live is a day of doubt.
There are people who are actually saying that you cannot be intelligent and
believe the Bible.
Many people are afraid that they will not be considered intelligent; so they don't
come out flat-footed and say whether they believe the Bible or not.

I suppose it is the most subtle and satanic trap of our day to discount the
inerrancy and integrity of the Word of God.
Christ says a man is a fool not to believe it.
He gave a unanimous and wholehearted acceptance of the Bible's statements,
with no ifs, ands, or buts.

Frankly, a lot of these men (theologians and preachers) do not have the
intestinal fortitude to stand for the Word of God.
J. Vernon Magee thinks their problem is more intestinal than intellectual!

Now notice that the Lord puts the emphasis upon the Word of God.

Luke 24:26-27 NKJV
26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?”
27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the
Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
Jesus began with Moses and the prophets.
Moses and the prophets had spoken of Him and His death and resurrection had
fulfilled their prophecies.
Christ says that there are two things which are essential to the understanding of
the Word of God.
They are simple but important.
• First, as verse 25 indicates, we must have faith in the Bible.
Christ said, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe”.
Pascal said, "Human knowledge must be understood to be believed, but divine
knowledge must be believed to be understood."
The Bible is a closed book to the unbeliever, they can learn a few facts but they
miss the message.
• On the other hand, some simple soul whose heart is turned in humble faith
to God will be enlightened by the Holy Spirit of God.
The eyes of his understanding will be opened.
Great men of the past have come to the pages of Scripture for light and life in
their hours of darkness or crisis.
• It is not smart to ridicule the Bible.

The Lord said, "You are a fool not to believe God’s word."

Then the Lord says that the Bible can only be divinely understood.
Human intellect is simply not enough to comprehend its truths.
Luke 24:45 tells us:
45 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the
Scriptures.
1 Corinthians 2:14 NKJV
14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they
are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually
discerned.
There are things that are above and beyond human comprehension, and only
the Holy Spirit of God can make them real to us.
Our prayer ought to be…
Psalm 119:18 NKJV
18 Open my eyes, that I may see
Wondrous things from Your law.

We should come with a humble attitude to the Word of God.
Just because we read the Bible does not mean that we know it.
• The Holy Spirit of God will have to make it real to us.
Luke 24:28-29 NKJV
The Disciples’ Eyes Opened
28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated
that He would have gone farther. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide
with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay
with them.

Luke 24 tells us of the courtesy of Jesus.
He made as if He would have gone on.
He would not force Himself upon them; He awaited their invitation to come in.
God gave to men the greatest and the most perilous gift in the world, the gift of
free-will; we can use it to invite Christ to enter our lives or to allow Him to pass on
by.
Luke 24:30 NKJV
30 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread,
blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
He only fellowships with those who believe in Him.

The resurrected, glorified Christ wants to fellowship with those who are His own.

They wanted Him to stay with them, and He was known to them at the table in
the breaking of the bread.
Eating around a table is a wonderful time to share the things of Christ.
There is nothing wrong with a church banquet, provided it is not all given over to
watching a magician or some other type of worldly entertainment.
We have too many church programs that leave Jesus Christ out.
To have true fellowship and blessing, He must be in the midst breaking the
bread.

The "breaking of bread" (Luke 24:30, 35) refers to a common meal and not to the
Lord's Supper.
• It was at an ordinary meal in an ordinary house, when an ordinary loaf
was being divided, that these men recognized Jesus.
It has been beautifully suggested that perhaps they were present at the feeding
of the five thousand, and, as He broke the bread in their cottage home, they
recognized His hands again.

It is not only at the communion table we can be with Christ; we can be with Him
at the common table too.
He is not only the Host in His Church; He is the Guest in every home.
Jesus revealed Himself to them during a common meal, and that is often how He
works.
We must learn to see Him in the everyday things of life.
Fay Inchfawn wrote,
Sometimes, when everything goes wrong;
When days are short and nights are long;
When wash-day brings so dull a sky
That not a single thing will dry.
And when the kitchen chimney smokes,
And when there's naught so 'queer' as folks!

Luke 24:31 NKJV
31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their
sight.

These two disciples had talked to Jesus and listened to Jesus and they asked
Jesus to come home with them.
They had been won by the Word of God, and they did not even know Who the
Stranger was.
Luke 24:32 NKJV
32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked
with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”

All they knew was that their hearts were "burning" within them, and they wanted
the blessing to last.
The more we receive the Word of God, the more we will want to fellowship with
the God of the Word.
Understanding Bible knowledge can lead to a "big head" (1 Cor. 8:1), but
receiving Bible truth and walking with the Savior will lead to a burning heart.

1b We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.
Luke 24:33-35 NKJV
33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the
eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is
risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that
had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of
bread.
The best evidence that we have understood the Bible and met the living Christ is
that we have something exciting to share with others.

The two men immediately left Emmaus and returned to Jerusalem to tell the
believers that they had met Jesus.
• But when they arrived, the apostles and the others told them that Jesus
was alive and had appeared to Peter!
What a difference it would make in our church services if everybody who
gathered came to tell about meeting the living Christ!
 If our services are "dead" it is probably because we are not really walking
with and listening to the living Savior.
This post-resurrection account tells how these two men, when they received
such great joy, hastened to share it.
• It was a seven miles tramp back to Jerusalem, but they could not keep
the Good News to themselves.
The Christian message is never fully ours until we have shared it with someone
else.

When they reached Jerusalem, they found others who had already shared their
experience.
• It is the glory of the Christian that he lives in a fellowship of people who
have had the same experience as he has had.
It has been said that true friendship begins only when people share a common
memory and can say to each other…

Each of us is one of a great fellowship of people who share a common
experience and a common memory of their Lord.
Trust the One Who is patient with all of us slow-to-believe disciples.
