1.1 Introduction
Alibaba Group Holding Limited is a Chinese multinational conglomerate holding company
specializing in e-commerce, retail, internet and technology. Founded 4 April 1999, the
company provides consumer-to-consumer (C2C), business-to- consumer (B2C), and
business-to-business (B2B). Sales service via web portals, as well as electronic payment
service, shopping search engines and cloud computing service. It owns and operates a
diverse array of businesses around the world in numerous sectors and is named as one of the
world’s most admired companies.
1.2 Brief Introduction
Alibaba group was founded by Jack Ma along with 17 other co-founders in 1999 with the
website alibaba.com, a business-to-business portal with an aim to connect Chinese
manufacturers with international buyers. The name Alibaba came from the character Ali
Baba from Persian literature One Thousand and One Nights because of its universal appeal.

History:
On 4 April 1999, Jak Ma and his team of 17 friends and students founded Alibaba.com,
acjina-based B2B marketplace site, in his Hangzhou apartment. In October 1999, Alibaba
recived a US$25 million investment from Glogman sachs and SoftBank. Alibaba.com was
expected to improve the domestic e-commerce market and perfect an e-commercw platform
for Chinese enterprise, especially small and medium sized enterprises, to help export Chinese
product to global market.

2.1 Contribution of alibaba.com:
Founder and chairman of alibaba group Jack Ma present at the ‘Ma Yun Rural Teachers
Prize’ awards show on January 22, 2018 in Janya. Billionaire business magnate Jak ma is
calling on other entrepreneurs to support his plans to lift millins of poor Chinese childrens out
of poverty and give them better access to education. Alibaba group also said that investing I
rural boarding schools could provide a solution for Chinas “ Left-behind children” and ensure
more prosperous fature for the next generation.
2.2 Impact of alibaba.com:
The ASEAN region has been identified as a primary target for the alibabagroup. Alibaba is
successful particularly in the Chinese market, the alibaba group accounts for 80% of the
online retaik , ”singles day” when a number of singles due to the one-child policy in China,
have a Chance to purchase goods at reduced price, well illustrates the success of alibaba in
China, Tmall and Toabao have generate a revenue of $575 billion only within 24 hours which
is greater than the revenue generated on the Black Friday and Cyber Monday together.
Alibaba.com increased investments are observed in the form of acquisitions marketing
activities, physical facilities, and product developments. Key investments have been made in
Sina Weibo, AutoNavi, China Vision, In Time Retail, and ByeCity, which represses a very
diversified investment portfolio. A crucial component of Alibaba’s strategy is its cooperation
with the government and state-owned entities.

3.1 Operation Process of alibaba.com
Alibaba’s business model is made up of three major web portals: alibaba.com, taobao, and
tmall. All of them serve to connect various types of buyers and sellers. However, there are 6
more subsidiaries of alibaba which include Aliexpress, 1688, Alimama, Alibaba cloud, Ant
Finanacial, and Cainiao Network. All these subsidiaries are so well integrated that they make
alibaba group a big ecosystem. Alibaba.com is the worlds largest online wholesaler
marketplace for global trade. The website allows exporters in china as well as in other
countries to connect with the buyers in over 200 countries. The buyers usually constitute
trade agents, wholesalers, retailers, manufacturers, and SMEs engaged in the import and
export business.
Sellers can list their products on the website for free. They also have the privilege to pay for
certain extra features such as greater exposure on the site and unlimited product listings.
Alibaba.com is a marketplace where sallers and buyers meet. The website acts as an
intermediary which charges commissions from the sellers of mainland China, Honking and
Taiwan.
3.2 Used Technology of alibaba.com
Alibaba group’s powerful computing network and wealth of data gives the company key
advantages in technological innovation.
To support its gaint e-commerce business, alibaba has built computational network that is the
world’s fastest cloud-based “Streaming Processing” platform. Alibaba is able to draw
extensive data on shoppinh habits not only from shopping website but also geo-location apps,
finanacial services, social media and sources of other source to help better serve customers
and drive efficient merchant operations.

In the e-trading marketplace, Alibaba provides a communication platform for trading partner
to communicate in real time through Alibaba’s Trade Manager tool. Alibaba also has a team
of dedicated experts that are always motivated to search for better and innovative technology
platforms to catch up with the changing of the generations. Alibaba is continuously trying to
develop highly complex system to improve the online transaction for the consumers by
setting ample security actions.

3.3 Unique Characters’ of alibaba.com
The business model of alibaba is different from other players like eBay and Amazon. It
focused more on trade between businesses. Unlike the usual business-to-business approach.
Alibaba focuses on being a part form for suppliers to sell products in bulk at small or
medium-sized business worldwide, who then resell them for a profit in their domestic
markets.
Although alibaba focuses on business to business trade it also supports other trade through e-
commerce web portals. Taobao is for consumers to trade, where as Tmall is for the upcoming
middle class of china to purchase branded product. There are many other subsidiaries through
which alibaba makes money.

Alibaba’s e-commerce marketing strategies have made it so successful in just a short period
that there is no other company that can overtake them at the moment. Planning to be a
company like Alibaba is easy but becoming like Alibaba is another thing. In this study, I
learned very much that the determination of the founder, Jack Ma has profoundly influenced
the success of Alibaba. Jack Ma once said it’s not about the list of privilege but the story of
opportunity that has made him a successful person even though he doesn’t know much about
technology.
There some important factor which I learn from this study:
Understand local people need and want
Ensure local market people demand
Local people consumption power
To promote the business, how to do social work
Useless of technology

5.1 Conclusion
Without doubt, Alibaba is now the leading international Chinese Internet company. However,
it is still struggling in expanding globally as the major revenue still comes from suppliers in
China. Alibaba has been trying to make its way internationally because of its biggest threat.
All in all, Jack Ma was just an ordinary person that had a vision, and it was the perseverance
and dedication that raise him into his current position in Aliababa. As one of the China
pioneer e-trade service platform, Alibaba has built a strong connection between SMEs in
China and oversea buyers with a boundless marketplace by providing the high quality
services at a reasonable price with various business marketing channels and promotions.
Alibaba has significantly attracted large base of consumer with the help of the large
population in China.
