Making youngsters understand the importance of being empathic towards others

1. Empathy
Empathy is the capacity to feel or understand what another person must be going
through from within their referral frame, that is, the capacity of placing one’s own self
in the position of another person. Empathy can be defined using a broad range of
states which are emotional ones. These may include helping and caring for other
people. So this basically revolves around the matching of emotions of two or more
persons. Thus its characterization is derived from the manner in which emotions
themselves are characterized. There are two major classifications of empathy:
affective and cognitive. The former involves the capacity of responding to the mental
state of another person with emotions which are appropriate. Cognitive empathy is
about understanding the mental state of another person.

• Put yourself in another person’s shoes before passing comments or being
judgmental
• Show concern and care towards others. Support them in their personal
problems and offer help in solving them
• Show acknowledgement towards the feelings of another person
• Encourage emotional sharing through asking questions
• Imitate the other person’s attitude, speech patterns, and gestures for
building a rapport and which is even called mirroring
• Build emotional connections based on the person’s present emotional
state and ask questions which can take the conversation forward
• Avoid judgmentalism and give the other person the benefit of doubt
• Provide emotional support and give them your affirmation and trust
