Disclaimer
Both CLARIN ERIC and myself are involved in the EOSC-hub project BUT
this presentation does not reflect the official EOSC-hub point of view
Its based on observations and expectations of myself and a few colleagues
Focussing on the relevance of EOSC-hub for SSHOC and the communities in
general

EOSChub and EOSC
EOSChub Project (both ideas and partners) is an initiative from a number of
previous EU e-Infrastructure projects EGI, EUDAT, Indigo DataCloud, ...
Large project (30ME) with almost all the usual suspects on board
Providing core infrastructure services for the research infrastructure
landscape that should then develop into the EOSC
Storage and computing services provisioning
Federating and common core e.g. common AAI, monitoring, …
Includes a fair number of community (thematic) services e.g. CLARIN metadata
framework
EOSC Portal: EOSC Website, EOSC Service catalogue, EOSC Marketplace
Services have been professionalized (policies, compliance, operations,
monitoring, description, …) and integration with one another where practical

What does this mean for you and for SSHOC?
EOSChub is of course interested to engage with the cluster projects; one
contact - many communities; such contacts lends mass and credibility to the
project
Only limited capacity available, costs need ro be covered, except for the Early Adopters
Program(EAP)
SSHOC has proposed the ‘new’ SSHOC EURHISFIRM project partner to participate in the
EOSChub EAP call 1
2nd call closes this week: https://www.eosc-hub.eu/eosc-early-adopter-programme-2nd-call
For now, SSHOC results consolidation (services, data, …) can only be a
matter for the individual SSHOC RI stakeholders
This does not prevent individual organizations & RIs to work with EOSChub:
Making use of EOSC services (capacity)
Become visible in the EOSC Portal & Marketplace
Advise and expertise for relevant services could be organized and provided by
SSHOC

Is EOSChub EOSC?
EOSC is still under construction and has its own governance structure
ESOChub is just a project 2018-2020; but it will offer a proposal to EOSC for
adoption
That proposal will likely be the complete EOSC-hub result: architecture, rules
of engagement, service portfolio
EOSC may ask for changes: e.g. less clutter, less overlap, less expensive, …
Existing investments over many years in the eInfra projects and services will
not be abandoned
There is much valuable expertise and excellent services involved that we
should preserve
Some cherry-picking by research communities is called for

(Still) next steps
Continuing the SSHOC – EOSC inventory and services matching analysis
Include also secondary systems, needed for the functioning of SSHOC results
Include supported community services for analysis of integration opportunities
Will allow to discuss suitability and detect gaps wrt. ESOC service portfolio
First analysis shows that all results can be handled by the SSHOC partner infrastructure
themselves with one or two exceptions (long tail of science)
SSHOC as a consumer mainly needs hosting and storage services
SSHOC as an EOSC contributor can help by publishing and integrating our services and data
in the EOSC-portal and other discovery services
Would be good if other cluster projects could be convinced to make a similar inventory and
analysis
Keep discussing the possible models of stakeholder solutions versus central EOSC-hub
solutions; this is of course also part of governance discussions in WP8

EOSC Alignment, what is it?
From the proposal: first of the 6 Main SSHOC impacts reads:
“The SSH are seamlessly integrated in EOSC”
We need to discover what the EOSC status and potential is
…. need to shape EOSC also to our vision. It is our cloud too!
Specific questions for SSHOC:
Can the cluster projects act as a separate conduit of products and results
to EOSC?
Can EOSC offer a platform for hosting results of collaboration initiatives
such as cluster-projects?
What would be needed?
at the level of hosting data, services and operations
but especially at the level of business models and governance

SSHOC: Many partners, one EOSC alignment strategy?
Main SSHOC stakeholders: CESSDA, CLARIN, DARIAH, E-
RIHS, ESS, SHARE
Different levels of infrastructure coherence and maturity
Different levels of current EOSC and e-Infra involvement:
CLARIN ERIC and some DARIAH partners are involved in EOSC-hub
other partners were involved in the EOSC pilots, and
SSH participation in EOSC(-hub) boards (i.e. Ron Dekker)
From a diversity perspective things look bright, but is it helpful to
forge a single EOSC Alignment strategy?
The relation between alignment of individual SSHOC
stakeholders and SSHOC - EOSC alignment is an important issue
for discussion
12. This project is funded from the EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme (2014-2020) under Grant Agreement No. 823782
Opportunities
The EOSC alignment question forces us to analyse and discuss
the options wrt. sustainability and sharing solutions already at an
early stage:
1. Using/sharing data management services from EOSC-hub
2. Sharing community-specific services with others, also outside SSH, and
how to do that cost-effectively
3. Identifying sustainable EOSC-hub solutions
4. Determining where community solutions are still preferable
Especially (2) should allow communities to claim their part in
EOSC and the accompanying funding and governance
responsibilities

Next steps
Continue the SSHOC – EOSC services match analysis, also
covering secondary systems, needed for the functioning of
SSHOC services
Discuss within SSHOC the merits and possible models of
stakeholder solutions versus EOSC-hub solutions
Continue discussion with EOSC-hub
about solutions for the different services needed: hosting services,
sustainable
flexibility range wrt. community specific usability requirements
how can EOSC-hub support collaborative initiatives as SSHOC
