GAMOLAN PEKHING MUSICAL NOTATION:
DENOTING MUSICAL SOUND IN LOCAL STYLE

GAMOLAN PEKHING
• Gamolan pekhing, commonly known as "cetik," is a xylophone musical instrument invented and
developed in Lampung, specifically in Sekala Brak, West Lampung. This instrument's primary
material is bamboo (figure 1), and it has a one-octave diatonic scale
• The musical instrument is commonly utilized to demonstrate cultural identity by the Saibatin or
Lampung Coastal communities. Gamolan is now used as a teaching tool in ethnomusicology
classrooms and universities.
Background
• Very few traditional music studies in Indonesia have
specifically investigated the musical notation system
• Based on the discussion of Judith Becker (1980) and
Myer-Moro (1990) about traditional musical
notation systems that remain influenced by Western
notation systems
• Gamolan music notation system brings the ideas of
local musicians and is distributed mass throughout
Lampung
Method
• Observations, documentation, and
interviews were undertaken as part of
the preliminary study for book
authoring in 2016-2017.
• Book documents are analyzed and
described. There are two books that
were created, the first book around
2008, the second book in 2018. Both
books use numerical notation that is
understood by certain circles.

Discussion
• The results of the document analysis indicate a musical notation
system as a complement to learning. If, used independently by
students or learners, the notation has not explained the meaning of
each symbol. There needs to be a direct meeting with a coach or
teacher who understands the musical notation system.
• Apparently the scale system in gamolan pekhing is also inseparable
from the influence of Western culture. A scale system resembling a
diatonic scale; and the do=G tuning system, indicating the forced-
culture it's trying to cult.
Conclusions
The use of the gamolan music notation
system requires the support of the
community, so that the written tradition
continues to develop and be preserved.
By collaborating with music scholars
and doing some testing is a step that
can be designed. Gamolan music
notation can be designed simply and
incorporate local idioms, such as
Lampung terms, local musicians' tuning
styles, and other musical identities.

  • 1. GAMOLAN PEKHING MUSICAL NOTATION: DENOTING MUSICAL SOUND IN LOCAL STYLE By: Riyan Hidayatullah ICOMAC 2021
  • 2. GAMOLAN PEKHING • Gamolan pekhing, commonly known as "cetik," is a xylophone musical instrument invented and developed in Lampung, specifically in Sekala Brak, West Lampung. This instrument's primary material is bamboo (figure 1), and it has a one-octave diatonic scale • The musical instrument is commonly utilized to demonstrate cultural identity by the Saibatin or Lampung Coastal communities. Gamolan is now used as a teaching tool in ethnomusicology classrooms and universities.
  • 3. Background • Very few traditional music studies in Indonesia have specifically investigated the musical notation system • Based on the discussion of Judith Becker (1980) and Myer-Moro (1990) about traditional musical notation systems that remain influenced by Western notation systems • Gamolan music notation system brings the ideas of local musicians and is distributed mass throughout Lampung
  • 4. Method • Observations, documentation, and interviews were undertaken as part of the preliminary study for book authoring in 2016-2017. • Book documents are analyzed and described. There are two books that were created, the first book around 2008, the second book in 2018. Both books use numerical notation that is understood by certain circles.
  • 9. Discussion • The results of the document analysis indicate a musical notation system as a complement to learning. If, used independently by students or learners, the notation has not explained the meaning of each symbol. There needs to be a direct meeting with a coach or teacher who understands the musical notation system. • Apparently the scale system in gamolan pekhing is also inseparable from the influence of Western culture. A scale system resembling a diatonic scale; and the do=G tuning system, indicating the forced- culture it's trying to cult.
  • 10. Conclusions The use of the gamolan music notation system requires the support of the community, so that the written tradition continues to develop and be preserved. By collaborating with music scholars and doing some testing is a step that can be designed. Gamolan music notation can be designed simply and incorporate local idioms, such as Lampung terms, local musicians' tuning styles, and other musical identities.
