Customerfaults on telephones and Switchboards
The Faultsman task included fault finding in all disciplines,ie,
Underground cables, Overhead cables,IndoorExchanges and
Subscriberfaults.

In charge of +/- 20 staff doing alterations and testing of Railway
Signalling Equipment
Started with Siemens in Bayhead in Durban as an Installation Artisan.
Installed Points Machines, Signal Tracks and AssociatedCabling.
I moved to the Unit Sectionwhere the function was to take Engineers
modifications and change the wiring in the Points or Signal Unit
accordingly.
I was promoted to Operating the TestMachines which simulated the
function of each unit. The Test Machine had to be programmed with
each modificationso a very good understanding of each units’ function
was crucial.
The Signalling System used at Bayhead was the Siemens Spoorplan
MKII and was modified forLocal Shunting Yards by Mr Hans Doll of
Siemens.
I first assisted Hans with Testing and Commissioning in Bayhead and he
was considered as the Authority on Spoorplanin South Africa. It was a
great honour to learn from him and I feelhis passion of Interlocking,
high work ethics and commitmentto deadlines (occupation dates)
influenced my passion in Railway Signalling.

It was at this time that Siemens selectedonly Two Artisans to be trained
in Commissioning and as One of them I was sent to the EsselenPark,
Railway College forTraining.
I was then sent to Vryheid to Head the Unit Department with
modifications of the MK1 Units used on the Coal Line Project. This also
included the assisting of Commissioning the completeLine from Vryheid
to Richards Bay. At Vryheid we also commissioned the AC/DC Yard
where the Train Type was changed over from AC to DC.
I was also involved in fault finding of the Data TransmissionSystem
(Westronic)used to transmit Data, Track information, Points and Signal
information from Small Relay Rooms back to the CTC in Vryheid.
At the end of this Project I was sent to the New Durban Station
(Spoorplan MKM) I was stationed at the Relay Room (Berea Road)
where I tested Indoor and Outdoor Equipment.
At this time I also attended Natal Technikon to do a National Diploma in
Electrical Engineering part time.
COMMISSIONING ENGINEER: 1985 – 1986
SIEMENS,CAPE TOWN
Commissioning of complete Railway Signalling Installation from Elsies
River to Woodstock.
In Cape Town I arrived at the beginning of the Installation of the Elsies
River Relay Room. I was working with the Installation Foreman advising
them of what was required first, eg staring with the Power Room,Static
Inverters, Battery Room to enable us to start the Charging Procedure of
the Batteries.
In the Relay Room we also started installing the Unit Racks and Cabling
while our outside team was busy installing Trackside Equipment.
We had Junior Technicians make up a TestDesk with Buttons, Route
Indicators,Tracks and Signals so the whole System could be tested
before switching over to CTC.
I worked closelywith the Railway Engineer and just before Occupation
date Hans Doll came down to check that I had commissioned everything
to Siemens standard. This was also a New System being a Railways

Designthe MK1C and Hans assisted us with the Block Designand
Commissioning.
SENIOR PROJECT ENGINEER: 1987 - 1992
SIEMENS,JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG
Running of R10 million Road Traffic Projects and assisting Junior staff
with smaller projects.
At the end of the Cape Town ProjectI was sent to Head Office where I
assisted with Commissioning of Traffic Light Systems and Fire Detection
Systems.
I was then moved to the Sales and Projecting division where I was
instrumental in building up the Traffic Light Department and securing Big
Projects.
The first big Projectwas the Randburg projectwhere we installed all new
Traffic Controllers (+/- 500) and linked them with a Unique Cabling
System laid in the roadside back to a Control Room with a Mimic Panel
of the whole town. The first Traffic Light Control Room in South Africa.

EDCOMPTRAFFIC LIGHT SYSTEMS
Director of company installing Traffic Light Intersections for
Johannesburg Roads Agencyand other Municipalities in South Africa
eg. Lesotho,Nelspruit, and Beaufort West.
I left the Corporate world of Siemens after seventeenyears to start my
own Company with Traffic Lights and secured Maintenance Contracts
with Johannesburg Roads Agency.
I also ran a Projectin Pretoria for Plesseywhere we changed all Traffic
Light Controllers (+/- 900)and connected them back via a Telkom Line
Data Transmissionto a Control Room.

BANOCKBURN MANAGEMENT PTY LTD
Formed new BEE company in accordance with Government
requirements. Installed new Traffic Light Systems and Electrical
Reticulation in Complexes and new houses.
Installation of Traffic Light Controllers for Johannesburg Roads Agency
and upgrading of old Installations (+/- 1000)linking via Radio Link and
Dial up Cell Phone link was tried to Central Control Room in
Johannesburg.
Vandals were stealing the Sim Cards so all Controller Boxes were
changed to Vandal Proof Boxes.
Closed Companydue to disagreementwith BEE partner.
OWNER INSTALLATIONELECTRICIAN : 2010 - 2013

Installation Electrician (Single and Three Phase) for New House,
Complexand Industrial Wiring and Reticulation.
Currently doing small Electrical jobs (Certificate of Compliance)for
