2. What are some of the requirements
of the Maguire Scholarship?*
The University of Scranton requires Maguire
Scholars to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA,
regularly meet with a designated Maguire
Mentor, participate in community service
opportunities, and attend some scholarship
events. First year Maguire Scholars are also
required to reside on campus in the “Cura
Personalis” Living and Learning Community.
*See the official Maguire Scholars Program
Recipient Agreement for full details and
requirements.
What is a Maguire Mentor?
The Maguire Mentor will be your liaison on
campus to help answer questions and guide
you during your four years at The University
of Scranton. The Maguire Mentor will meet
individually with each Maguire Scholar
student as early as the Summer Orientation.
The Maguire Mentor will establish meeting
dates and times for students (both
individually and as a mentor group)
throughout the academic year. Maguire
Scholars are also encouraged to stop by and
meet with the Maguire Mentor based on
one’s time and need.
The Maguire Mentor will be responsible for
reporting on student progress, participation,
and compliance with the Maguire
requirements to maintain one’s Maguire
Scholarship at The University of Scranton.
“I wanted to make the experience my
own and I wanted to make a
difference. When I leave I want it to
matter that I had been here.”
- Maguire Scholar’s reflection on service
opportunities at The University of Scranton
How many Maguire Scholars are there?
Since 2000, the Maguire Foundation has awarded more
than $80 million in grants and scholarships. In 2015, The
University of Scranton began partnering with the Maguire
Foundation. Since then as many as four Maguire Scholars
per year have participated in the program.
You are not alone! Maguire Scholars will be introduced to
each other to create a community of support and
friendship. Students will be able to provide student-to-
student mentoring, as well as share conversations,
experiences, and service opportunities.
What is the “Cura Personalis” Living Learning
Community?
At The University of Scranton, Living Learning Communities
(LLCs) bring together students who share a common
interest and give them the unique opportunity to take a
course together, live together, and engage in special events
and service projects. There are five different LLCs at The
University of Scranton.
The LLC called “Cura Personalis” (CP) is rooted in Jesuit
teachings focused on three pillars: justice, service, and
faith. Offering service projects, reflection,
and retreats, CP strives to create a culture of “men and
women for others” by volunteering in the local community,
welcoming conversations about faith, and engaging in
justice issues on a local and global scale.
Through participation in the CP Maguire Scholars will be
able to meet one of the scholarship requirements of “active
participation in school or community service volunteer
activities.” All students in CP will share a common Theology
course that will satisfy the First Year Seminar course
requirement.

What is required for community
service?
The Jesuit mission is founded on service. The
University of Scranton seeks to provide
opportunities for students to share or find ways
to be in solidarity and service to the poor, the
marginalized, and those seeking justice. CP will
provide opportunities for community services,
as well as different programs and initiatives
organized by various student and University led
groups.
A unique aspect of the Maguire Scholars
Program is that the Maguire Scholars will also
perform agreed upon service opportunities as a
group to have a shared learning experience.
