These are the slides from Elise's presentation from our International Women's Day event on her experiences as a leader and educator within the scouting movement.
2. History
Baden Powell got his idea for scouting from his time spent in
the army. He trained soldiers in "scouting," and taught them
how to develop experience in stalking, how to fend for
themselves, as well as being observant of all signs that
would give them advantages.
Baden-Powell conducted an experimental camp in 1907
for boys and taught them these exact skills.
In1908 the scouting movement for boys was created.
In 1910, Baden-Powell’s sister Agnes organized the Girl
Guides as a separate organization.

16. Challenges of females in
leadership
Jackie I was one of the first female Venture scouts
in Salford and the first female Queen's Scout in the
district. I am strong enough to tell blokes they're
wrong and show through my actions that I am as
good as, if not better than some blokes. it was
usually the older ones who looked down their
noses, including the Chief Scout Michael Walsh.
He was a bit shocked at my attitude when I told
him that I was as good as a bloke as a scout
leader. It was 1983, don't think he was used to
strong, Confident young women with attitude!

1. Ladies fit uniform! It most certainly doesn't.
2. Unwanted comments from a Scout at group
camp. Something along the lines of 'she just needs to
get some' was said as I turned away from asking him
to be quiet. I wanted to sort it out myself but had to
find a male leader to intervene before I lost the plot.
3. Benefits mainly involve being a leader full stop. The
little moments when a Beaver will come up to me
with their writing or their model and want to explain
to me, and only me what they have done. Pride.

18. Julianne For me personally:
Older males in the movement not treating myself
and other women 'right' or fairly.
Ive learnt how to be 'stronger' in voice and im no
where near as shy as i was before
Ive made some really cool/awesome people and
quiet a few of them will be mates for life.
Seeing my YP succeed and do things they didn't
think they could do!

19. Princess Being female and built like my charges, I get hit on
accidentally by them sometimes and then mocked by the
(new) male leaders for feeling uncomfortable. That's probably
the worst. Generally I don't face issues solely for being female;
issues arising because of my stature/strength, though, are a
different matter. The only other adults who've judged me
incapable because of my sex are some of the newer male
leaders (generally also parents only of boys), and that wears
off the second they see I can do everything they can do,
oftentimes better.
I really enjoy doing the "soft"/"feminine" welfare things
(homesickness, menstrual issues, mental health...because all of
those are female problems, amirite? ), as I tend to teach the
"harder", more practical program elements and I expect
moderate discipline. It's good for me to interact with the youth
in all kinds of ways, and it's good for them to start to
understand that the strict leader most certainly isn't heartless.

Girls have been admitted to the Scout association since 1976 when they were first allowed to join the Venture Scouts section for 16 to 20 year-olds. This expanded to the entire organization in 1991; although the decision to admit girls was optional, it has been compulsory since 2007, although religious preferences can be accommodated.
7 million adults are involved in Scouting worldwide
36,565 adult women involved in leadership
2% of the worlds scouts are female
Found in 121 countries and territories
Example of a rover crew
I’ve been fortunate to have had an equal amount of men and women within my scouting movement
Here we see some common attributes of being a member of the scouting association
These qualities that are imparted while being a Scout member carry over to everyday life.
Theses are also qualities that are beneficial to being a leader within Scouts and also valuable to leadership in other capacities.
A Scout tells the truth. s/He keeps his/her promise to the best of their ability
A part of a scout caring for the environment is park warden & fire warden duties
Not everyone can do this and only a select few get chosen
Safe burnings isn't for everyone as there are risks involved- accidental clearing and possible bushfire and harm to you self are three of the main risks involved.
There are not many female fire wardens found as it’s a dangerous job and considered mans business.
This specific weekend there were only 3 female wardens myself being one of them.
Fire got out of control, as they do. However people this weekend were not taking the right safety precautions
Part of the responsibilities of being an adult leader is
Running exciting, challenging weekly and weekend programmes
which attract new members and retain existing ones.
You always have to be on your toes with this one and have activities planed at least a month or two in advanced. A challenge can be running a new activity that older scouts may have done the previous year
A huge part of being a leader is teaching and assessing
There are competition camps which are held over long weekends.- say goodbye to the social life you had
Learning how to tie knots and work with the elemental objects surrounding you is a huge assets to have
Basic maintenance on tents and equipment teach respect for ones personal belongs as well as others
Enhance the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual and emotional growth and personal development
of all youth members by ensuring their participation in interesting programmes
Camp set ups are an important thing to remember Plan within a camp activity log book
Lists all equipment along packed
Lists meals that will be prepared therefore you can construct a shopping list
As a leader I believe in breaking down those irrational beliefs and giving everyone an equal opportunity.
Cooking isn’t just a womans job, its an important skill for everyone human to have.
Often both leaders and scouts are faced with situations in which they must both face and overcome fears. Leaders help facilitate this by providing nurtuing and supportive enviroments in which to do so
Hights – treetops activity bas on which you can scale extreme heughts
Canoeing is both a fun and educationaal acitiviy as is raises awareness of water saftey
Question postedon the 1st facebook scout group
Giving a talk for international women's day. Here's a few questions I’d like to ask all female leaders: what are some of the challenges being a female leader? What are the benefits? Why is it rewarding to you? Please help me out
A lot of these women suffered from sexism from their male counterparts during their time within the Scouting movement. However as time progressed during their terms as Scout leaders these women managed to prove they were equally capable.
My own experience within the Scouting movement also unfortunately included instances of sexism and inappropriate behavior from my male counterparts. I had to prove myself “worthy” enough to use certain tools and perform certain actions that were deemed to be a “man’s” job.
Under close supervision I was taught useful skills like how to use power tools and concrete and render.
Being an active member and leader also means ater learnig these skills I can eventually pass them on to future generations
Now of course not everything in leadership is serious and there are plenty of opportunities to explore new areas and try new fun activities
This is Mudbash an adult camp for 18 -26 it
comes under cams racing
Fillies event (all girls) we took a corner too fast and ended up rolling over
There are Many other racing events that I can attend all over Australia
Last year fortunate enough to compete with my new crew
First time racing in 2 years
I earned my stripes by coming 2nd overall
Sally- “The tremendous tips and tools I learnt through Scouting certainly trained me for life.”
Catriona . “Problem solving, effective communication and leadership skills are not only essential in the bush but also in the workplace,”
Helen -"Many of the things I learned during my involvement with Scouting include leadership skills, the ability to work well in a team and a sense of comradeship. These have been of great benefit to me in both my professional career and personal development.”
Georgina Georgina Sutton is a Qantas 767 Fleet Captain. She overseas about 180 pilots, only 13 of whom are female. This is the highest position a female pilot has achieved at a major Australian airline. Qantas has 3784 pilots, of whom only 4.5 per cent are female.

It is important to remember that even if you are a female leader within the association there are always people that you can turn to for help. It’s a family that prides itself on nurturing everyone to grow.
