 A textile is an object made by interlacing threads or
yarns into a fabric.
 Originally, these yarns were made of animal or plant-
based fibers.
 Then, as technology improved, synthetic fibers were
came into picture, which are stronger and more
versatile.

 What is the function of textiles ?
 The original function of textiles was to shield people
from cold and rain.
 Later on, in history, aesthetic aspects also came to
play a role in clothing.

 The textile world has always been in a state of
constant change.
 However, the speed of the change has increased
considerably in recent years.
 What will the textile world look like in the future?

 In the search for the answer to this question, many
companies are rediscovering original values such as
sustainable production and customizable products.
 Product recycling and social commitment also
feature even higher on the list of priorities.

 The latest stage of the technological revolution in
the 21st century is :
 the development of fabrics that can be infused with
the latest technologies.
 We call them smart textiles

SMART TEXTILES
 Smart Textiles are defined as textiles that can sense
and react to environmental conditions or external
conditions(stimuli) in a predetermined way.
 Why we need smart Textiles?
 These fabrics have been designed and
manufactured to include technologies that provide
the wearer with increased functionality.

 Smart textiles , also known as :
 Smart garments,
 Smart clothing,
 Smart fabrics
 Electronic textiles, or
 Interactive textiles

The technology of SMART TEXTILES is an integration of almost all disciplines of
applied sciences like:
 Textile chemistry
 Fiber technology
 Cloth manufacturing technology
 Material science
 Structural mechanics and aviation hydraulics
 Electronics and instrumentation
 Telecommunication
 Artificial intelligence
 Molecular biology and organic chemistry
 Molecular engineering and nanotechnology
 Biotechnology
 Information technology
 Theory of chaos and randomizations.

 These large number of technologies are blended with
one another to produce fashionable textiles which make
our lives comfortable and luxurious.
 SMART TEXTILES, however, are not just restricted to
clothing and apparels but extend to many other
applications like automobiles, robotics, aircrafts,
medicine and surgery, etc.

“Smart" Textiles
 Embroidering circuits into fabric or Printing transparent
sensor material on to textiles, are the recent
advancements in this filed.
 These embedded technology enables the clothing made
from them either :
 to perform functions that regular garments cannot perform,
or
 to have special characteristics that regular clothing does
not have.

 The smart fabrics market identify two main segments
within the industry :
 Nano fabrics, and
 Connected fabrics.

Main segments
 Nano fabrics are smart fabrics manufactured with
the use of nanotechnology.
 Nanoparticles are embedded in regular fabrics to
enhance or give new properties to the material.
 (An embedded system is basically an electronic system that can be programmed to operate,
organize, and perform single or multiple tasks based on the application. In the real time
embedded systems, all the assembled units work together based on the program or code
embedded into the microcontroller. )

Main segments – Nano fabrics
 Different kinds of nanoparticles can give fabrics :
 waterproof,
 stain-resistant, or
 odour-resistant properties
without changing the texture and feel of the
textile.
 For instance, integrating silver nanoparticles into
garments can make them odour-resistant.

 2) Connected fabrics: are smart fabrics that
incorporate digital technology.
 Clothing made with connected fabrics has the ability
to connect to other devices, such as smartphones
and tablets.
 This system allows wearers of connected garments
to track their athletic performance by collecting and
analyzing biometric data during workouts.

Smart textiles can be classified in 3 categories according to
its functional activity.
They are as follows:
 1) Passive Smart Textile
 2) Active Smart Textile
 3) Ultra Smart Textile

Classification of Smart Textiles
1) Passive Smart Textile:
 Passive Smart Textiles are materials with a textile nature
that can be included in a textile structure.
 Passive Smart textile is the first generations of smart
textiles, which can only sense the environmental
conditions.
 Passive Smart Textiles provide additional feature in a
passive mode i.e. irrespective of the change in the
environment. For example ………

1) Passive Smart Textile:
 For example, a highly insulating coat would remain
insulating to the same degree irrespective of the outside
temperature.
 Wide range of capabilities, including anti-microbial,
antiodour, anti-static, bullet proof are the other
examples.

2) Active Smart Textile:
 Active Smart Textile is the second generation which
has both actuators and sensors. Which can sense and
react to the environmental stimuli
3) Ultra Smart Textile:
 It is also known as Very smart textile. It is the third
generation of smart textiles, which can sense, react
and adopt themselves to environmental conditions.

 At the end of the 19th century, as people developed
and grew accustomed to electric appliances,
designers and engineers began to combine
electricity with clothing and jewelry—developing a
series of illuminated and motorized necklaces, hats,
broaches and costumes.

Now we have fabric creations that :
 change color using any smart phone,
 indicate callers on mobile phones without a digital
display,
 And,
 contain WIFI security features that protect purses and
personal items from theft.

Smart textiles have numerous potential applications
because of their speciality, such as :
 ability to communicate with other devices,
 conduct energy,
 transform into other materials, and
 protect the wearer from environmental hazards.

“Smart" Textiles
 Smart clothing could be used from the moment we are born
till the end of our life.
 Such clothing can make us feel comfortable at all times,
during any activity and in any environmental conditions,
 Or made into a suit that protects and monitors, even helps to
treat diseases and injuries.
 The Wearable textile-based personal systems even warn the
wearer in case of danger and provide protection and safety.

Other examples of smart textiles include :
 fabrics capable of releasing medication or moisturizer
in to the skin,
 fabrics that help control the vibration of muscles
during athletic activities, and
 materials that regulate body temperature.

durable, and can handle any weather

 Smart textiles can be created using various
manufacturing processes depending on the desired
properties that the textile is to have.
 Spacer fabrics (3D fabric like quilted) are especially well
suited to integrate sensors.
 Knitted fabrics, on the other hand, are especially useful
in the areas of sport and medicine due to their flexibility.

 The functionality of Smart textiles means they can make
a significant contribution to sustainability, for example
 in medicine by treating wounds in a manner that saves
resources, or
 in everyday life when the power needed for various devices
and functions can be carried directly on the body or created
via solar energy.

 Furthermore, growth in medical and healthcare industries is
anticipated to lead to higher demand for smart textiles during
the forecast period.
 However, market growth is likely to be sluggish due to high
prices of finished products of smart textiles as compared to
conventional textiles.
 Rising number of research and development activities for
product and technological innovation is expected to provide
new opportunities for market growth.

 The textile industry is about to take a giant step from
being a supplier of fabrics to become a positive force
in the development of society.
 Textile innovations improve people’s everyday lives
and benefit the industry, the health care sector and
the environment.

growing rapidly and presents significant
opportunities for business expansion for apparel and
sportswear manufacturers and retailers.

Summary
 Previously smart textiles were presented as imaginary
products and used in very limited areas.
 After scientific efforts and development phases, nowadays
smart textiles are presented as the future of the textile
industry.
 Now many commercial products are available.
 A lot of scientists are developing new solutions, ideas and
concrete products with the emerging demand of smart textiles
in various phases of life.

  • 2.  A textile is an object made by interlacing threads or yarns into a fabric.  Originally, these yarns were made of animal or plant- based fibers.  Then, as technology improved, synthetic fibers were came into picture, which are stronger and more versatile. 2 Textiles
  • 3.  What is the function of textiles ?  The original function of textiles was to shield people from cold and rain.  Later on, in history, aesthetic aspects also came to play a role in clothing. 3 Textiles
  • 4.  The textile world has always been in a state of constant change.  However, the speed of the change has increased considerably in recent years.  What will the textile world look like in the future? 4
  • 5.  In the search for the answer to this question, many companies are rediscovering original values such as sustainable production and customizable products.  Product recycling and social commitment also feature even higher on the list of priorities. 5
  • 6.  The latest stage of the technological revolution in the 21st century is :  the development of fabrics that can be infused with the latest technologies.  We call them smart textiles 6 Textiles

SMART TEXTILES  Smart Textiles are defined as textiles that can sense and react to environmental conditions or external conditions(stimuli) in a predetermined way.  Why we need smart Textiles?  These fabrics have been designed and manufactured to include technologies that provide the wearer with increased functionality. 7 “Smart" Textiles

  • 13.  Nano fabrics are smart fabrics manufactured with the use of nanotechnology.  Nanoparticles are embedded in regular fabrics to enhance or give new properties to the material.  (An embedded system is basically an electronic system that can be programmed to operate, organize, and perform single or multiple tasks based on the application.
