From Event to Action: Accelerate Your Decision Making with Real-Time Automation
Operating system
1.
2. Operating system is a system software which is
interface between computer user and computer
hardware. It is master controller of the
computer system because it is responsible for
manage all hardware and software.
3. Functions of operating system
Input and output control: The problem
with input and output is that different input and
output devices have different characteristics ,and run
at different speeds. The I/o control module of an
operating system is responsible for making them
independent from the point of view of the
programmer. And it is also responsible for manage and
control the all input and output devices which are
connected to the computer.
4. Memory management:
Most of computer nowadays are capable of holding
several program in memory simultaneously so that
user can switch from one application to another. The
operating system is responsible for allocating the
memory space to all the file and folders in a computer
system.
5. Resource allocation and scheduling
large computer system which are capable of running
several program at once . The operating system is
responsible for allocating processing time , memory
and input and output resource to each one while one
program is executing. The operating system is
responsible for scheduling the I/o devices for the next
job.
6. Backing store management:
In the backing store of a computer bulk of the data and
program being processed are kept. The operating
system is responsible for store the program which are
executing as a backup purpose.
7. Virtual memory and paging:
Virtual memory is a technique for making a computer
appears to have more memory that it actually has. The
operating system is responsible for making the more
memory that it actually has. And paging is a system ,
in this system each process is divided in to fixed
number of blocks as per the need of (RAM). The
operating system is responsible for making the virtual
memory.
8. Protection and security
The operating system is responsible for protecting all
the data and information by inserting password in
computer system. The operating system allowed user
to insert password in the computer system.
9. Types of operating system
The operating system is divided in to two types.
On the bases of user interface.
On the bases of user interface operating system
is divided in to two types
1-User interface
CUI(command user interface)
GUI(graphics user interface)
2-process method
Single user
Multiuser
10. Types of operating system
Single user operating system
Multi user operating
Multiprogramming
Multi tasking.
Real-time
11. Types of operating system
Single operating : Single user operating systems are those
operating system which allow only one user to access a
computer and to operate a computer. It means only one
user can execute one program at time such operating
systems are known as single user operating system. For
example Ms Dos.
Multi user operating system: Multi user operating system
systems are those operating system which allow to access
more then two user simultaneously. It means those
operating system which can execute instruction given by
more then two user at the same time is known as Multi user
operating system. For example Unix, linux.
12. Types of operating system
Multi programming: Multi programming operating
systems are those operating system which can allow
more then two program at the same time . It means
these operating system which execute more then two
program at the same time is called multi
programming operating system. for example Windows
NT, Vista etc.
13. Types of operating system
Multi tasking operating: Multitasking operating
systems are those operating system which can allow
more then two task at the same time is called multi
tasking operating. For example if a user watching a
video and at the same time he /she listening to music
throw the head phone and and chatting with friends
such operating systems are known as multitasking
operating system.
14. Types of operating system
Real time operating system: Real time operating
systems are those operating system which allow to
execute a instruction with real time it means on the
exact time they are also known as online operating
system.
15. User interface
on the basis of user interface operating systems are
divided in to two types
CUI
GUI
CUI : CUI stands for command user interface. This
operating system only uses command to execute any
program and to perform any instruction. This
operating system does not support mouse, picture,
image and graphics. For example MS DOS, this is a
single user operating system it is a product of micro
soft corporation limited USA.
16. User interface
GUI: It stands for graphical user interface. This
operating system support WIMP, which means
Window, Icon, Mouse ,Pointer etc. This operating
system takes instruction from the mouse and it
support image, graphics etc. These operating system
multi user and multi programming. For example vista,
Linux etc
