Prestone Printing and Our Promise to the Environment
- 2. At Prestone Printing, it’s not just what you see – it’s what you don’t see. Behind the scenes we’re working hard to insure we do all we can to create a sustainable planet and use environmentally responsible and sustainable materials.
- 3. All house papers are recycled papers made with post consumer waste. It takes less energy to make paper from recycled content than from raw pulp, so it’s important for all of us to support recycling by choosing these papers.
- 4. Our inks are vegetable-based, which minimizes carbon-based petroleum. Not only do they degrade faster, but there are other benefits as well, such as the brightness of the colors and superior rub characteristics.
- 5. Prestone has obtained both FSC and SFI certifications. If you chose one of our house papers, it’s important to know that we stock only recycled papers with 10% Post Consumer Waste - specifically Flo (coated), Productolith (coated) and Mohawk Navajo (uncoated).
- 6. We look for potential environmental savings in every step of the process. By doing that, we consciously make choices to reduce our ecological footprint. Even when they’re small choices, we know they add up.
- 7. One of the best ways that you can eliminate landfill waste is by accepting soft proofs when possible. Soft proofs keep proofing materials out of landfills. The soft proofing system we are using is Kodak Insite which works with high resolution PDF’s. Insite allows you to show multipage pieces in a booked format.
- 8. We use digital plates because it requires less chemical processing. When Prestone first opened our doors over 50 years ago, no one worried about the chemicals that went down the drain every day. Today, it is our concern because we recognize the consequences of our choices.
- 9. We work with customers and suppliers on efficient logistics because it saves fuel and money. We combine paper shipments to avoid multiple truck runs. We map out courier routes and choose standardized shipping options like the mail, UPS and Fed Ex when possible. In the case of logistics, every small decision matters so we pay attention to them.
- 10. From office to pressroom to fulfillment, we pursue greener ways to run our facility. •Our automated blanket washers reduce VOC emissions. •By recycling ink fountain solutions we reduce chemical waste. •We recycle ALL manufacturing waste. •We recycle make ready paper and office paper.
- 11. A little effort can go a long way in energy consumption. According to the Sierra Club, the US Department of Energy estimates if uniformly used, the energy-efficient technologies available today, such as more efficient lighting and appliances, would permit us to cut the cost of heating, cooling and lighting our homes by up to 80%. At Prestone, we take information like this to heart and put it to use.
- 12. We did an energy audit on our plant, and made simple changes. Low impact lighting and efficient energy practices reduce the need for the production of electricity from fossil fuels.
- 13. We made conscious choices about power and 40% of all energy used in our facility comes from renewable resources.
- 14. We’ve all heard about global warming and the dangers caused by CO₂. That’s what prompted Prestone to become a “Carbon Neutral” company, and we’re happy to announce we have achieved a ZERO carbon footprint!

By investing in automated blanket washers, we substituted technology for human judgment insuring we use the minimal amount of blanket wash required to get maximum results. We also manage the waste stream by recycling ink fountain solutions, all manufacturing waste, make ready paper and all office paper, too.

Both quality systems allow us to quickly match proofs on press, help us avoid plate re-makes and cut paper and ink waste. G-7 certification and closed loop color also saves you money because it makes us more efficient.
