Role of Textile Engineer & Technologist

Supervisory Development
• The need for trained supervisors
• The textile manufacturing is one of the oldest trades in the
world and hence has innumerable number of units engaged in
this activity. Hence there is a very high competition. The success
of a company depends on how competitively one can produce
quality goods to the satisfaction of the customers at competitive
price and deliver in time. Therefore, continuous developments
can be seen in the technological aspects as well as in managerial
aspects in the industry.
Technological Developments in Textile Industry
• The textile industries, although undergoing rapid technological changes,
are still labour intensive. Further the process of manufacturing has
number of control steps to ensure that products are suitable for the
ever changing requirements of the customers. Although there is
automation at number of places, still there is a need for technical
persons to monitor the processes to ensure that they are carried out as
planned and the work practices are adhered to as needed to get the
required quality and productivity. Such person is called as a supervisor.
Textile Industry should appoint Textile Technologist as supervisor.
Otherwise Industry has to teach and Train every employee Textile
Engineering &Technology.
Technical ability of the Team of Technical Managers
• The supervisor is a very important person in a textile industry to
monitor the activities on man to man and minute to minute basis. The
job involves both technical aspects and the human related approaches.
There are number of technical colleges and polytechnics, which give
basic information on the technology, where as in the industry, the first
job given to a technician is supervising the activities and monitoring
them. The candidates completing the courses get their diplomas,
bachelor or master degrees, or even doctorates. The industry recruits
people by seeing their marks and the way in which they answer in the
interviews, but soon find them not up to the mark when they start
working in the industry.
Textile Industry Training
• The colleges give lot of information to the students that can cover all types of
possible jobs a candidate can take like that of working in a shop floor of an industry
or working as a faculty in an educational institute or as a research scholar and so on.
The college education gives the basic knowledge of technology but not on the
practical activities a supervisor has to do in an industry. The colleges can give some
hint on the roles and responsibilities of a supervisor, but cannot effectively train a
supervisor. The reasons are many. Normally one uses only 5% to 10% of what he
learnt in the college while working in an industry, as the industry cannot have all the
processes or machines taught in the college. Industry restricts itself to one or two
specific processes and develops it as their core competency. Industry expects their
supervisors also to concentrate on the process and the systems adopted, and not to
bother about other systems or technologies being adopted elsewhere as it cannot
give the results or they could not be adopted due to various reasons.
Technical human capitol development
• To get trained as a supervisor the candidate needs some
exposure to industry working and the one who is giving training
should have thorough practical experience in the industry. The
trainer should not only impart skills to the candidates, but also
should improve their competency for solving their day-to-day
problems by logical approaches. The services of such people in
training the supervisors shall be very helpful to the industry.
• CTF proposes to Train Trainers – to develop core competency in
each Technical person on the production floor by conducting
series of interactive practical teaching /learning in the present
Technology.
Roles and responsibilities of supervisors
• Before imparting training, the objectives, roles and
responsibilities of supervisors are to be made clear to them.
The supervisor is the manager of his section and has the
objectives of achieving the sectional and departmental
objectives by planning, coordinating, implementing and
controlling the activities. The supervisor, who is a mediator
between the top management and bottom line workers
have the following responsibilities

• Understanding the requirements of the customer precisely and
communicate to the workers to produce the quality in the
language which they understand.
• To understand the company capabilities, like process capability,
human resource capability, funds availability, and infra structure
availability, etc., and working out the plans to accomplish the
production requirements.
• To understand the legal requirements of the process for the
products and services planned and monitoring that the
requirements are met.
Roles and responsibilities of Supervisor
• Designing the product that is acceptable to customer
• Designing the process for manufacture to get optimum out put at
minimum time and cost.
• Deciding the measuring and monitoring processes and monitor the
process.
• Working out the Quality plans and ensuring the same is implemented
as planned.
• Working out the production programme and monitoring the production
• Planning for the raw materials and other spares and consumables and
indenting for the same as needed.
Roles and responsibilities of Supervisor
• Procuring the required materials in time and ensuring their
quality by proper inspection and testing.
• Planning the maintenance activities and implementing them to
have minimum loss of time for maintenance activities while
ensuring lowest possible failures.
• Tuning the machines as per the process designed
• Educating and training the men on shop floor on the production
and quality aspects of the product and the process.
• Allocating the suitable competent workmen for the skilled jobs
and monitoring their works relating to quality and productivity.
Personnel Skills required in Technical Professional
• Monitoring the process periodically to ensure its suitability and to have
lowest wastes possible.
• Documenting the procedures adopted, actions taken on various
problems and the results and monitoring that the procedures are
followed all the time.
• Reporting the activities suitably to superiors as well as to the next
person taking charge.
• Analysing the reasons for deviations in process and product
performance and discussing with the superiors for suitable actions.
• Arranging for monthly, quarterly, half yearly and annual stock taking as
per the requirement of the company and the section.

Productivity Improvement Factors in a Weaving Mill
ABSTRACT
In this research discussed about some productivity improvement factors in a weaving mill. Productivity is an
average measure of the efficiency of production. It can be expressed as the ratio of output to inputs used in
the production process, i.e. output per unit of input. When all outputs and inputs are included in the
productivity measure it is called total productivity. Outputs and inputs are defined in the total productivity
measure as their economic values. The value of outputs minus the value of inputs is a measure of the income
generated in a production process. It is a measure of total efficiency of a production process and as such the
objective to be maximized in production process.

INTRODUCTION
Productivity is essential in every sector. Productivity means more profit with less cost at the definite time.
Everyone should play their own role in achieving better production rate in these working sectors. If
productivity increased that means production efficiency has been
increased. Many factors affect productivity. Some general categories for these
factors are product, process, labor force, capacity, external influences, and quality.
METHODS
There are many factors involved which may improve the productivity in a weaving mill, but here we will focus on
some specific areas. By working on these below mentioned factors, we can achieve our productivity goal.
1. Efficiency of Machinery.
2. Raw Materials.
3. Labour.
4. Manufacturing processes.
5. Humidification.
6. Energy Issue.
7. Maintenance.
1. Efficiency of machinery
Productivity is greatly influenced by the machinery efficiency, if the machine has the latest or upgraded model then
definitely the productivity will be high, multiphase and air jet loom has the highest weft insertion rate. If the
machines have proper maintenance then, the breakage of weft yarn will be low. Breakage is the important factor to
optimize the productivity, less breakage of weft yarn is the guarantee of more productivity ratio. In this competitive
market many types of looms are available in the market but those looms are preferred whose yield is high and has
best production results. If the machine runs without any stoppage, then the production efficiency will be definitely
increased.

2. Raw materials
It is observed that raw material quality has the key importance in production process, such as from where
you are buying raw materials and who is your supplier? If your raw material is of high quality, then the
chances of breakage and error would be minimum. There will be cost factor issue in this regard because for
high quality raw material you have to pay more but on the other hand this will compensate in the form of
high production. So, Raw materials quality is an important factor for improvement productivity.
3. Labour
Labour motivation is important. Skilled labour and their capacity is also an important factor. Labour personal
involvement sometimes dependent on company’s production. If the labors are well trained and aware of
machine operations, then production rate will be high. Labors carelessness or ignorance during production
process affected the production efficiency. When machine stops due to breakage or any other reason than
delay of restarting the machine has an impact on production. Sometimes it happens due to negligence of
workers because they don’t start the machine at the right time. Furthermore, more labour on one machine
cannot give the guarantee of high productivity while on the other side competent labour can give the better
results.

4. Manufacturing processes
Productivity improvement also depends on the manufacturing processes. In weaving, various
manufacturing processes and parameters are done to accomplishing the production such as warping,
sizing, looming etc. If these processes are being completed at the right time with shift, then the
productivity will be increased because of each single process have taken the definite time for
manufacturing the product and enhancing the productivity. The control factors effecting the weaving shed
efficiency. Weaving efficiency can be improved by monthly analyses of out of production hours and also
checking weaver performance once a month. This will help you to increase weaving efficiency.
5. Humidification
In weaving shed, humidification factor has great impact on the production. In weaving process, the yarn
faces different tensions and friction forces. So, temperature in this environment should be maintained. If
the temperature is exceeded than the standard temp, then breakage will be increased and production
efficiency will be decreased and as a result whole production will be disturbed. So, to overcome this
situation temperature issue should be in your mind. This will provide the best operating conditions for
machine operators.

6. Energy issue
In weaving, energy is used in terms of machines operations, for air conditioning, compressors and other
production areas etc. Two types of energy sources are used in a weaving mill one is electrical energy and
another is thermal energy. For machine operations, air conditioning and for illumination electrical energy is
used but for sizing operation thermal energy is used. If you have previous version or old model loom, then
your energy consumption will be more as compare to the latest machinery. Latest machinery can save the
energy consumption and definitely improve the production rate.
7. Maintenance
The main purpose of maintenance is to minimize the operating cost and to improve the quality and reduces
the chances of stoppage of machine. In a weaving mill, generally work is being done in three shifts. Normally
maintenance department is responsible for checking the machinery working condition. Due to proper
maintenance, production quantity will be improved and manufacturing cost will be decreased.

DISCUSSION
From the above production analysis, it is easily analyzed that minimum change in those factors can affect
production and cost. The research showed that there are many factors by which we can improve productivity,
but emphasis was on one of the most important factor which yielded very important results. In the production
of fabric, we should keep many things in mind which can control and enhance the productivity parameters.
Productivity can be enhanced by restructuring each process or using fully automated machine. While producing
fabric, quality of raw material or other parameters have their own importance. On the other hand, we should
realize that without participation of each individual nothing can be done. So, companies should make the
policies which are favorable and helpful to both managers and workers.
CONCLUSION
By using automated machinery, higher raw material quality, skilled labour and energy issues have an impact on
production of fabric. If any company has an importance on these issues then, that company can survive in this
competitive market in a better way. With the growth of production, the company earns more profit and can
create more vacant positions for the new jobs to increase or install new machinery. For this they need more
investment or capital and new labor will help in improving the productivity. In the textile sector the high profit
with customer satisfaction is the key issue. Customers should be satisfied by the textile sector in order to retain
a long term relationship with them. Customer’s trust must be kept on top priority by each and every company.

1) Identification of thrust areas for students in Training / Project / R and D work
2) Exposure to Present Technology in the Industry and preparing the students for skills

4) Educational Program for the supervisory technical personnel to upgrade educational
qualification
5) Encourage adoptive research from educational Institutes

  • 21. Productivity Improvement Factors in a Weaving Mill ABSTRACT In this research discussed about some productivity improvement factors in a weaving mill. Productivity is an average measure of the efficiency of production. It can be expressed as the ratio of output to inputs used in the production process, i.e. output per unit of input. When all outputs and inputs are included in the productivity measure it is called total productivity. Outputs and inputs are defined in the total productivity measure as their economic values. The value of outputs minus the value of inputs is a measure of the income generated in a production process. It is a measure of total efficiency of a production process and as such the objective to be maximized in production process. Efficiency of machinery Productivity is greatly influenced by the machinery efficiency, if the machine has the latest or upgraded model then definitely the productivity will be high, multiphase and air jet loom has the highest weft insertion rate. If the machines have proper maintenance then, the breakage of weft yarn will be low. Breakage is the important factor to optimize the productivity, less breakage of weft yarn is the guarantee of more productivity ratio. In this competitive market many types of looms are available in the market but those looms are preferred whose yield is high and has best production results. If your raw material is of high quality, then the chances of breakage and error would be minimum. There will be cost factor issue in this regard because for high quality raw material you have to pay more but on the other hand this will compensate in the form of high production. So, Raw materials quality is an important factor for improvement productivity. 3. Labour Labour motivation is important. Skilled labour and their capacity is also an important factor. Labour personal involvement sometimes dependent on company’s production. If the labors are well trained and aware of machine operations, then production rate will be high. Labors carelessness or ignorance during production process affected the production efficiency. When machine stops due to breakage or any other reason than delay of restarting the machine has an impact on production. In weaving, various manufacturing processes and parameters are done to accomplishing the production such as warping, sizing, looming etc. If these processes are being completed at the right time with shift, then the productivity will be increased because of each single process have taken the definite time for manufacturing the product and enhancing the productivity. The control factors effecting the weaving shed efficiency. Weaving efficiency can be improved by monthly analyses of out of production hours and also checking weaver performance once a month. This will help you to increase weaving efficiency. 5. Humidification In weaving shed, humidification factor has great impact on the production. In weaving process, the yarn faces different tensions and friction forces. So, temperature in this environment should be maintained. If the temperature is exceeded than the standard temp, then breakage will be increased and production efficiency will be decreased and as a result whole production will be disturbed. For machine operations, air conditioning and for illumination electrical energy is used but for sizing operation thermal energy is used. If you have previous version or old model loom, then your energy consumption will be more as compare to the latest machinery. Latest machinery can save the energy consumption and definitely improve the production rate. 7. Maintenance The main purpose of maintenance is to minimize the operating cost and to improve the quality and reduces the chances of stoppage of machine. In a weaving mill, generally work is being done in three shifts. Normally maintenance department is responsible for checking the machinery working condition. Due to proper maintenance, production quantity will be improved and manufacturing cost will be decreased.

The research showed that there are many factors by which we can improve productivity, but emphasis was on one of the most important factor which yielded very important results. In the production of fabric, we should keep many things in mind which can control and enhance the productivity parameters. Productivity can be enhanced by restructuring each process or using fully automated machine. While producing fabric, quality of raw material or other parameters have their own importance. On the other hand, we should realize that without participation of each individual nothing can be done. So, companies should make the policies which are favorable and helpful to both managers and workers. CONCLUSION By using automated machinery, higher raw material quality, skilled labour and energy issues have an impact on production of fabric. If any company has an importance on these issues then, that company can survive in this competitive market in a better way. With the growth of production, the company earns more profit and can create more vacant positions for the new jobs to increase or install new machinery. For this they need more investment or capital and new labor will help in improving the productivity. In the textile sector the high profit with customer satisfaction is the key issue. Customers should be satisfied by the textile sector in order to retain a long term relationship with them. Customer’s trust must be kept on top priority by each and every company.
