The ITN action will be implemented through support to competitively selected research
training programmes executed by partnerships of universities, research institutions,
businesses, SMEs and other socio-economic actors, located in Member States,
associated countries and other third countries. Successful partnerships will take the
form of research training networks, industrial doctorates or joint doctorates.
ITN will promote high-quality training of early-stage researchers and doctoral
candidates. This training will provide researchers of any nationality with a diversity of
skills that will allow them to benefit from enhanced career perspectives in both public
and private sectors.
The training programmes will address the development and broadening of core research
competences, while equipping researchers with a creative mind, an entrepreneurial
outlook and innovation skills that will match the future needs of the labour market. The
programmes will also provide training in transferable competences such as team-work,
risk-taking, project management, entrepreneurship, ethics, IPR, etc.

Horizon 2020 will tackle societal challenges by helping to bridge the gap between research and the
market by, for example, helping innovative enterprise to develop their technological
breakthroughs into viable products with real commercial potential. This market-driven approach
will include creating partnerships with the private sector and Member States to bring together the
resources needed.
International cooperation will be an important cross-cutting priority of Horizon 2020. In addition
to Horizon 2020 being fully open to international participation, targeted actions with key partner
countries and regions will focus on the EU’s strategic priorities.
