3. What is GI tag?
• A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on products which
corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin.
• Acts as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities, is made
according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its
geographical origin.

5. What purpose does it serve?
• It increases the income of the producers of the concerned area.
• It safeguards the consumers against the “fake” products.
• It increases tourism too.
• It highlights the significance of the product at national and International
level.

6. Who does issue GI Tag?
• By the GI Registry.
• It is valid for 10 years and has to be renewed after that period.
• Any person can file an opposition or counter claim against a GI tag given
to a particular product.
