If high quality activities are the motor for a great classroom, then transitions and positive reinforcement are the valves and gears that keep it moving smoothly. This interactive presentation reviews some principals behind transitions and positive reinforcement, as well as many games, attention getters and positive reinforcers. 9:31am – Welcome,We’re here to learn & have fun, so expect to get your energy level up, and have a good time.
9:32-33amReview the items in the agreement list; 2 second explanation for each.
9:34-35amPhrase of the day is Hold Up! Wait a Minute! When you hear us say Hold Up! You say Wait a Minute!
9:35-37amIntro Mingle GameStand up behind your seat, Like a Conga line, “Mingle, Mingle, Mingle!”Walk around the SpaceOn the third, “Mingle MingleMingle” you will hear “FREEZE!”Find the person closest to you, introduce yourselfYour NameProgramAn Attention GetterHold Up!! Wait A Minute!! To get started again. We’ll do this three times and then get back to our seats.
9:43 – 9:45Minute Move to get them back to the seatSelect a group color and have them perform an action to get back to their seats (Facilitators demonstrate to break the ice).
9:45amLet’s take a minute and get ourselves in the Management Mindset! What does that look like?
9:46amYou or your staff member might be the group leader. Do you want to work against energetic, tactile/hands-on, easily distracted students?OR…
Do you want to work with them and make it a great time for everyone? That’s basically why we’re here. Let’s get everyone on the same team.
9:48amWe want to get away from the Hope end of the spectrum where we’re going against the youth’s needs to the Know end. If we use effective transitions and use positive reinforcers correctly, we’ll know youth are EngagedHaving funFeeling safeBehaving
9:48-9:50amOur agenda for the day. We’re looking at - The foundations of transitions and how to make them happen. - Attention getters and signals (like Hold Up!! Wait a Minute!!, and FREEZE)Minute Moves (Color & Action)More transition GamesPositive ReinforcersAnd we’ll bring it all back together at the end
9:51am What’s great is that having effective transitions and games, it builds a positive program culture and helps to meet DHS outcome areas.
9:51-9:55Let’s start with a story today. Everyone, meet Naafis!
9:51-9:55 Naafis is a 3rd grade student in afterschool, and he’s pretty smart, usually doing art projects and is mannerly.
9:51-9:55 During the program’s 30 minute free-choice time, Naafis wanted to make towers using building blocks. On this day, he was trying to build the biggest tower he could ever build! And, he was sooo close to doing it!! Think about how happy he would feel. He just needed two minutes more.
9:51-9:55
9:51-9:55
9:55 – 9:58amTalk within your groups for 5 minutes to think of three transition activities or ways to initiate a transition that would have helped avoid Naafis’s challenging behavior.
9:58 – 10:01What transitions did you come up with? Any other ideas?
Let’s talk transitions
10:01-10:02When we talk about transitions, we’re talking about change over time. Getting a student from one place to another and knowing there are a lot of options for where he or she can go.
10:03Transitions are the hinges of the program. Without being able to pivot, programs break down, so we need to make sure that our transitions work with the youth to keep them engaged. Are you against them or with them?
10:04We’re familiar with the common transitions in programs like arrival & Dismissal, moving between spaces, and moving between activities.
10:05-10:08When do you have transition challenges. Take a minute to pick the most difficult transition and get ready to share out. Raise your hand if its…_____, how about ______, ________,
10:09 - When we think about transitions, we’re thinking about time. What controls our time in program? Our schedule. Here’s a sample OST schedule. Pretty common. Pretty basic, but does it always happen like this on a daily basis? NO WAY!!
10:10This is what our time really looks like– nearly an hour of downtime when youth aren’t doing much of anything. 15 minutes here, 5 minutes there…it adds up. We need to prepare for this because we know what idle hands lead to:
10:11Youth that are ready to either walk out or wil’ out. What we’re trying to get to is a point where we’re not just spending time because its on the schedule. We want to save time and increase youth engagement in everything we’re doing. It might look something like…
10:12This…a schedule like this is something that can happen. Have some games, energizers, minute moves, and more incorporated into the schedule so the youth and you can pick. The best part is, we’re going to teach you these games and why/when to use them. Before we do that, we have to…
10:13Look at the lifecycle of a transition. This timeline shows generally what happens. It starts with an announcement & wrap up(a few minutes)Then we get the youth’s attention again, Do the transition (game, energizer, minute move, etc.)Get the youth to where we want to be, and then start the new activity.
10:14FYI, we need to have some other items in place to make this even easierYouth Leadership to help wrap up, clean up, keep others on task, and moreWe need to let youth know in advance what they will hear (Hold Up!! Wait a Minute!!). Familiarity is key.We need to have taught the youth how and practiced with them. And groups/teams make it so much easier to get bunches of youth to stay on task.So now…are you ready for some games?!?!!
10:15amBefore we get to this, let’s take a 5 minute break to make some space, get our energy level up and get ready to move.
10:20amLet’s start with a Minute Move– The Human DVD Player
10:23-10:28amBefore we get to this, let’s take a 5 minute break to make some space, get our energy level up and get ready to move. Youth form a lineFirst four get on base, one in middle“Switch!”Youth from line tries to get to a baseYouth who are out go to end of lineTie breaker– Rock Paper Scissors
10:28amHere’s another cooperative game that requires strong teamwork & attention skills
10:31am
10:32amHere are some things we’ve done today outside of the games. We used attention getters– That require sound or movement to get the youth focused. Group Leaders make clear that it’s time to pay attention without needing to raise their voice.
10:33Why attention getters?Makes clear when the transition is going to happenThe brain takes notice, Builds a natural feedback response“When I hear this, then I do this.”Keeps up energy, and it’s fun
10:35Why attention getters?Keeps up energy, interactive and it’s funThe youth see that you want to make it enjoyableThey will do the same for you.
10:36Use them wisely– if you overuse or misuse, kids will say, Really Bro? You Drawwwn
10:38Let’s try it…when I say uh! You say ah!
10:37-10:43
10:43
10:44
10:45We do minute moves because we need to get somewhere in a hurry. BUT we need to make it fun and enjoyable while getting students in the mindset that we have to move for a new activity/space/etc. Keep it fun, safe, quick. Human DVD Player

10:49
10:49Keep transitions controlled but fun. Games and Energizers builds community, attention skills, and improves cooperative learning.
10:50a
10:51Feeling of support, care, health, and safety;Positive reinforcement and care help the brain GROW.
10:52Must have lots of different ways to provide reinforcement. Like layers, you need to add on and peel off.We have to balance it between physical vs. emotional
10:53 – Now it’s GAME TIME.
