3. Sigmund Freud
- An Austrian psychoanalist of Galician Jewish origins born in the Czech town of
Příbor, nevertheless, he quickly moved with his family to Vienna
- In 1882, Freud began his medical career at Vienna General Hospital, this
career was mainly linked with the cases of “hysteria”
- A huge influence of the Nietzschean philosophy can be seen in his works
- Very quickly though, his researches were deemed as pseudo-science and until
today he still remains a controversial figure in the field of psychology

5. Oedipus and Electra Complex
- A case inspired by the Greek mythology by the myth of Oedipus, this case was
elaborated in his book called Interpretation of Dreams in 1899
- Freud rejected the term Electra complex, introduced by Carl Jung in 1913 as a
proposed equivalent complex among young girls.
- He first explored the concept of having a sexual attraction towards own parents
of the opposite sex, this inspired many artists including Alfred Hitchcock in his
movie “Psycho” (1960)

7. Todestrieb and Repetition Trauma - Death Drive
- In classical Freudian psychoanalytic theory, the death drive is the drive toward
death and destruction, often expressed through behaviors such as aggression,
repetition compulsion, and self-destructiveness
- Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920)
- The first problem Freud encountered was the phenomenon of repetition of a war
trauma. When Freud worked with people with trauma (particularly from World
War I), he observed that subjects often tended to repeat or re-enact these
traumatic experiences

9. Psychology as a Pseudoscience
- During the totalitarian rule of Czechoslovakia, Freud’s theory was rejected as a
“bourgeois” pseudo-science
- The importance of pseudo-analysis was neglected and seen as a purely medical
problem to solve
- This led to many misinterpretations of previous theories and a general belief
that only “crazy” people have to visit a psychologist/psychiatrist
- After the revolution, the mere fact of seeking the help of psychologist still
remains stigmatized by the society to a wide degree
