Water Purification By Solar Energy

Introduction
•The aim of our project is to purify water by using
solar energy in rural areas or where there is lack
of electricity. And to purify the water we have
used two methods, they are UV and RO process.
We are using solar energy because in rural areas
the amount of electricity is not sufficient. Sun
ray is available in our country and by using this
sun ray, we will produce electricity.
Necessity of water purification
Pure drinking water is essential for human life.
By an international organization working for
water sanitation 80% of India’s surface water is
polluted.
Water born diseases, such as typhoid, cholera,
diarrhea.
2.5 to 15 million children and old people are
affected by diarrhea.

Process of water purification
We used two types of process in our project.
Reverse Osmosis (RO).
Ultra Violet (UV).
Reverse Osmosis(RO)
What is Reverse Osmosis ?
Reverse Osmosis is a
technology that is used
to remove a large majority
of contaminants from water
by pushing the water under
pressure through a
semipermeable membrane.
types of elements are removed by RO
 More than 99% of dissolved salts(ions)
 Dust Particles
 Colloids
 Organics
 Bacteria
 Pyrogens
 And many more
Ultra Violet (UV)
Ultraviolet water purification is the most effective
method for disinfecting bacteria from the water.
Ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate harmful pathogens in
water and destroy illness-causing microorganisms by
attacking their genetic core (DNA). This is extremely
efficient in eliminating their ability to reproduce.
Disinfecting your water with Ultraviolet light is
exceptionably simple, effective and environmentally
safe. UV systems destroy 99.99% of harmful
microorganisms without adding chemicals or
changing your water’s taste or odor.

What is solar energy?
Solar Energy originates with the thermonuclear fusion reactions
occurring in the sun
The spectrum of solar light at the Earth's surface is mostly spread
across the visible and near infrared ranges with a small part in the
ultraviolet region.
Use of solar panels
Reduce the use of fossile fuel
Reduce impact on the Environment
Reduce energy bill
Solar energy is applicabale everywhere
Make possible the use of electrical equipment where
electricity is not available
Solar Panel
Solar Panel is an indispensable component
of this system
Solar Panel is responsible to collect solar
radiations and transform it into electrical
energy
Solar Panel is an array of several solar cells
(Photovoltaic cells). The arrays can be formed
by connecting them in parallel or series
connection depending upon the energy
required

About half the incoming solar energy reaches the Earth's surface

For example we estimate the solar radiation at REC BIJNOR
Solar panel required for our project
According to our water purifier system we need 3Kw energy
We run system for 7 hours
Approx 7*400=2800 Lt pure water in 7 hours
By estimation for 3Kw energy we will need –
10 numbers of 180 w solar panels and 6 numbers of 150 w solar
panels
Disadvantages of solar energy
Capital cost is high
Weather dependent
Solar Energy Storage Is
Expensive
Uses a Lot of Space
Alternatives-
We can use wind energy also in rainy and cloudy wheather
Future importance
As we know day by day water continue to pollute
Even water of villages is not suitable to drink
So our solar based water purifier will produce pure and healthy water
even in villages and people will save by many water deceases
In future there is lack of conventional energy sources like fossile fuels
So using solar energy like renewable energy is a good option to save
conventional energy sources.

is setup in the villages near SAMBHAR
LAKE,RAJASTHAN
Many reseaches are going on for
improvement of this system in India
Challenges for this system
It will need constant and Continues solar radiation
 As PV is a fluctuating energy source and the conventional membrane
process needs a constant power input to maintain pressure and flow
on the membranes to guarantee their lifetime, some challenges in the
system design need to be improved.
By many science and technological institute are reseaching for
improvement of that system and trying to make compatible for
marketing purpose.

  • 4. Introduction •The aim of our project is to purify water by using solar energy in rural areas or where there is lack of electricity. And to purify the water we have used two methods, they are UV and RO process. We are using solar energy because in rural areas the amount of electricity is not sufficient. Sun ray is available in our country and by using this sun ray, we will produce electricity.

Necessity of water purification Pure drinking water is essential for human life. By an international organization working for water sanitation 80% of India’s surface water is polluted. Water born diseases, such as typhoid, cholera, diarrhea. 2.5 to 15 million children and old people are affected by diarrhea.
  • 7. Process of water purification We used two types of process in our project. Reverse Osmosis (RO). Ultra Violet (UV).
  • 8. Reverse Osmosis(RO) What is Reverse Osmosis ? Reverse Osmosis is a technology that is used to remove a large majority of contaminants from water by pushing the water under pressure through a semipermeable membrane.

  • 10. Ultra Violet (UV) Ultraviolet water purification is the most effective method for disinfecting bacteria from the water. Ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate harmful pathogens in water and destroy illness-causing microorganisms by attacking their genetic core (DNA). This is extremely efficient in eliminating their ability to reproduce. Disinfecting your water with Ultraviolet light is exceptionably simple, effective and environmentally safe. UV systems destroy 99.99% of harmful microorganisms without adding chemicals or changing your water’s taste or odor.

  • 20. Solar panel required for our project According to our water purifier system we need 3Kw energy We run system for 7 hours Approx 7*400=2800 Lt pure water in 7 hours By estimation for 3Kw energy we will need – 10 numbers of 180 w solar panels and 6 numbers of 150 w solar panels
  • 21. Disadvantages of solar energy Capital cost is high Weather dependent Solar Energy Storage Is Expensive Uses a Lot of Space Alternatives- We can use wind energy also in rainy and cloudy wheather

Future importance As we know day by day water continue to pollute Even water of villages is not suitable to drink So our solar based water purifier will produce pure and healthy water even in villages and people will save by many water deceases In future there is lack of conventional energy sources like fossile fuels So using solar energy like renewable energy is a good option to save conventional energy sources.
  • 23. Solar PV based water purification in INDIA First solar pv based water purification system is setup in the villages near SAMBHAR LAKE,RAJASTHAN Many reseaches are going on for improvement of this system in India

Challenges for this system It will need constant and Continues solar radiation  As PV is a fluctuating energy source and the conventional membrane process needs a constant power input to maintain pressure and flow on the membranes to guarantee their lifetime, some challenges in the system design need to be improved. By many science and technological institute are reseaching for improvement of that system and trying to make compatible for marketing purpose.
