5. Minimum Requirement for solar Rooftop plants :
ï” A southern orientation is ideal although, East and west facing roofs can still capture
over 80% of the energy.
ï” Minimize roof obstructions to maximize PV capacity and aesthetics as shading can
significantly reduce energy production.
ï” Plan for current and future landscaping, neighboring houses and roof âstick-upsâ.
ï” Approx. 100 sq. ft. of roof for every kW of PV capacity.
ï” 2.5 â5.0 kW for new homes depending size of home.
ï” Need of grid connection for grid tied solar roof-top, net-metering is applicable where
it is already enforced like Delhi, Gujarat, Andhra pradesh,kerala etc.

ï± In grid tied systems, the system is interfaced with the state power grid.
Here, Solar takes the first priority to run the loads.
ï± Second priority will be given to grid If the load exceeds the power
generated by solar or cloudy environment, system automatically switched
over to grid.
ï± Third priority is given to DG sets which are much costlier than solar & grid
power, Grid tied system can also be configured without a battery bank.

9. Off-Grid System
ï” Off Grid or stand-alone system refers to being independent of the state
grid. The design would support all the loads and sufficient back up would
be provided to cater the power needs under worst conditions.
ï” One can go off-grid for low intensity loads. In other words, all equipment
having a power rating lesser than 500W can be taken off grid.

11. Hybrid and grid interactive System
ï” Hybrid system is a smart system involving, solar, grid and diesel generator (DG). Here, Solar
takes the first priority to run the loads. Excess power generated will charge the battery
bank.
ï” During night battery will support the loads till a safe battery voltage. System will switch
over to grid automatically below battery safe voltage. If GRID is not available and battery
has been discharged, PCU can command DG to start and supply power to the loads till Grid
or solar is restored.
ï” Hybrid systems can also be configured as grid interactive systems where only solar and grid
are present. Here, the first priority is given to solar. Excess power generated will charge the
battery bank. During night battery will support the loads, till a safe battery voltage. System
will switch over to grid automatically below battery safe voltage. This would extend the
battery life and provide seamless power supply.
