In this talk Olaf Janssen explains how and why joining forces with Wikipedia fits in the bigger open data strategies of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek. Starting from a brief historic overview of its Wikipedian-in-Residence project in 2013-14, he not only explains how the KB has been collaborating with Wikipedia and its volunteer community over the last couple of years, but also which positive impacts it has had for the exposure, distribution and reuse of KB's collections. Sharing is Caring – Brussels Extension: Opening up with Wikimedia took place on 20 June at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage in Brussels. This conference introduced the Belgian heritage sector to the possible applications of the various Wikimedia platforms for opening up digital collections. The Vienna City Archive and the Vienna City Library have joined forces with several other institutions in Vienna, Austria to create the “Wien Geschichte Wiki” (Vienna History Wiki), a knowledge platform for the history of Vienna with more than 34,000 articles and 120,000 visits per month. The wiki is powered by Semantic MediaWiki and serves not only as an online encyclopedia for everybody to use and contribute to, but also as a central knowledge base for several administrative departments of the city administration. In a peer-review process, wiki edits are checked before they become visible. A usage log analysis and an online survey have been carried out to gain first insights after six months of operation.

In this presentation I will briefly present the structure of the public library network in the Netherlands, with particular emphasis on the way public library innovation is “organised”. There is currently a community of practice (CoP) organised for every specific area of library innovation which at the same time also addresses officially established national priorities, i.e. lifelong learning, development of traditional library services, education of the young population, etc. Librarians in each of the CoPs share experiences specific to their field based on which they identify future activities aimed at the development of the particular field. Librarians included in this CoP system come from libraries of all types and sizes regardless of the province or region. 206 words This paper introduces resources on newspapers and magazines developed by the Heidelberg Research Architecture (HRA), the Digital Humanities unit of the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”. Its focus will rest on the Early Chinese Periodicals Online (ECPO) project, a collaborative endeavor between Academia Sinica, Taipei, the Cluster project MC15 “Powers of the Press,” and the HRA. The technical core of ECPO is the development of a database of women’s magazines and entertainment newspapers. This database combines and significantly expands two resources developed in the Cluster’s first funding period which represent two complementary methodological approaches: The “Xiaobao Entertainment Newspapers” database covers more than fifty newspapers and provides information from a macro perspective (“extensive approach”). It offers characteristic features of individual newspapers and illustrates these with a number of examples. The “Chinese Women’s Magazines” database approaches its material from a micro perspective (“intensive approach”). It covers four major publications and records and analyses every single item, including advertisements. While both methods have their advantages, with the extensive analysis providing characteristic features of a larger set of publications, and the intensive analysis offering detailed information for individual magazines, their combination within one system will offer a powerful research framework for the study of Early Chinese Periodicals.

This presentation was delivered as one of the keynotes at the 23rd International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries (TPDL 2019) on 9-12 September 2019 at OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University, Oslo, Norway. http://www.tpdl.eu/tpdl2019/keynotes/ Can we consider libraries as the laboratories of the humanities? If so, would they be good places to observe and better understand the everyday practices of the humanist at work? Similarly, can the notion of the laboratory as a place of scientific experimentation be applied to libraries as a place to experiment with digital cultural heritage collections? Could “library labs” enable humanities researchers, cultural heritage professionals and computer scientists to work more closely together to push the boundaries of contemporary humanistic enquiry? Using Bruno Latour’s anthropological observations of the scientific practices of biologists in their laboratory as a starting point, we will consider the concept of libraries as the laboratories of the humanities. Extending this concept further, we will consider, “what is a library lab?” by examining the activities of library labs internationally. Finally, we will introduce the emerging Digital Research Lab at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) as part of a long-term collaboration with the Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities (GhentCDH). Using “KBR Labs” as a case study, we will consider the role that library labs could play as experimental incubators for digital humanities research.

Theoretical predictions and observational data indicate a class of sub-Neptune exoplanets may have water-rich interiors covered by hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. Provided suitable climate conditions, such planets could host surface liquid oceans. Motivated by recent JWST observations of K2-18 b, we self-consistently model the photochemistry and potential detectability of biogenic sulfur gases in the atmospheres of temperate sub-Neptune waterworlds for the first time. On Earth today, organic sulfur compounds produced by marine biota are rapidly destroyed by photochemical processes before they can accumulate to significant levels. Domagal-Goldman et al. suggest that detectable biogenic sulfur signatures could emerge in Archean-like atmospheres with higher biological production or low UV flux. In this study, we explore biogenic sulfur across a wide range of biological fluxes and stellar UV environments. Critically, the main photochemical sinks are absent on the nightside of tidally locked planets. To address this, we further perform experiments with a 3D general circulation model and a 2D photochemical model (VULCAN 2D) to simulate the global distribution of biogenic gases to investigate their terminator concentrations as seen via transmission spectroscopy. Our models indicate that biogenic sulfur gases can rise to potentially detectable levels on hydrogen-rich water worlds, but only for enhanced global biosulfur flux (20 times modern Earth’s flux). We find that it is challenging to identify DMS at 3.4 μm where it strongly overlaps with CH4, whereas it is more plausible to detect DMS and companion byproducts, ethylene (C2H4) and ethane (C2H6), in the mid-infrared between 9 and 13 μm. Wepresent Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array 12-m, 7-m, and Total Power Array observations of the FUOrionis outbursting system, covering spatial scales ranging from 160 to 25,000 au. The high-resolution interferometric data reveal an elongated 12CO(2–1) feature previously observed at lower resolution in 12CO(3–2). Kinematic modeling indicates that this feature can be interpreted as an accretion streamer feeding the binary system. The mass infall rate provided by the streamer is significantly lower than the typical stellar accretion rates (even in quiescent states), suggesting that this streamer alone is not massive enough to sustain the enhanced accretion rates characteristic of the outbursting class prototype. The observed streamer may not be directly linked to the current outburst, but rather a remnant of a previous, more massive streamer that may have contributed enough to the disk mass to render it unstable and trigger the FU Orionis outburst. The new data detect, for the first time, a vast, slow-moving carbon monoxide molecular outflow emerging from this object. To accurately assess the outflow properties (mass, momentum, and kinetic energy), we employ 13CO(2–1) data to correct for optical depth effects. The analysis indicates that the outflow corresponds to swept-up material not associated with the current outburst, similar to the slow molecular outflows observed around other FUor and Class I protostellar objects.
