2. OBJECTIVES:
AT THE END OF THE LESSON, THE LEARNERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
1. Identify the parts of digestive system and ;
2. Explain the digestive system’s main processes.
3. Recognize the importance of healthy digestive
system
3. LEARNING TASK 1:

4. INTRODUCTION
Food plays a central role in the survival of species.
Food gives organisms energy that enables them to carry
out the many activities they do each day; are able to
obtain energy from the foods they eat through digestion.
Digestion of food is carried out by the organs and
substances of the digestive system. The nutrients are
circulated to the different parts of the body through the
bloodstream and assimilated by cells.
5. LEARNING TASK 2. ON YOUR OWN WORDS
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS BRIEFLY
1. It is said that food gives energy, what kind of foods
do you think can give you this energy and why?
6. LEARNING TASK 3. ON YOUR OWN WORDS
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS BRIEFLY
A video song entitled “ The Digestive Song” will be play and from there, students will answer the learning task 2.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsGG_61ge_A&t=64s
7. LEARNING TASK 3. ARRANGE THE EVENTS IN
ORDER BY WRITING THE CORRECT CLUE WORD
FOR THE WHOLE DIGESTION PROCESS.
First Next After that Then Last
1. _________,absorption happens when the broken down food enters the
bloodstream and its nutrients are put to work (gives energy to body).
2. _________, undigested materials are removed from the body as feces.
3. _________, the food goes down to the stomach and chemical digestion
happens, making the chyme.
4. _________, food enters the alimentary canal through mouth (mastication
happens).
5. _________, secretion of fluids/ digestive juices and mixing it to help soften
food(bolus) before swallowing it.
8.
9. Digestion involves:
• Breaking down of food into smaller pieces
• The mixing of food
• Movement through the digestive tract
• Chemical breakdown of the large molecules of food into smaller
molecules.
10. THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM IS RESPONSIBLE FOR TAKING WHOLE FOODS
AND TURNING THEM INTO ENERGY AND NUTRIENTS TO ALLOW THE
BODY TO FUNCTION, GROW, AND REPAIR ITSELF.
THE SIX PRIMARY PROCESSESOF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM INCLUDE:
ingestion,
propulsion,
mechanical or physical digestion,
chemical digestion,
absorption, and
defecation.
11. 1.Ingestion, refers to the entry of food into the alimentary canal
through the mouth. There, the food is chewed and mixed with
saliva
2. Propulsion the movement of food through the digestive tract.
3.Mechanical digestion is a purely physical process that does not
change the chemical nature of the food. Instead, it makes the
food smaller to increase both surface area and mobility. It
includes mastication, or chewing, as well as tongue movements
that help break food into smaller bits and mix food with saliva.
12. 4.Chemical digestion, starting in the mouth, digestive
secretions break down complex food molecules into their
chemical building blocks
5.Absorption most nutrients are absorbed from the lumen of
the alimentary canal into the bloodstream through the
epithelial cells that make up the mucosa.
6.Defecation undigested materials are removed from the body
as feces
14. MOUTH
• Mechanical digestion - Teeth bite off
and chew food into a soft pulp that is
easy to swallow.
• Chemical digestion – saliva
15. ESOPHAGUS
THE ESOPHAGUS IS A MUSCULAR TUBE. IT
TAKES FOOD FROM THE THROAT AND PUSHES
IT DOWN THROUGH THE NECK, AND INTO THE
STOMACH.
IT MOVES FOOD BY WAVES OF MUSCLE
CONTRACTION CALLED PERISTALSIS.
16. STOMACH
• The stomach has thick
muscles in its wall.
These contract to
mash the food into a
water soup called
chyme.
• The stomach lining
produces strong
digestive juices.
17. SMALL INTESTINE
• The nutrients are broken
down small enough to pass
through the lining of the
small intestine, and into the
blood.
• Nutrients are carried away to
the liver and other body
parts to be processed,
stored and distributed.
18. LARGE INTESTINE
• Water is absorbed.
• The remains are formed into brown,
semi-solid feces, ready to be removed
from the body
19. RECTUM
•Rectum’s job to receive
stool from the colon, to
let the person know that
there is stool to be
evacuated, and to hold
the stool until evacuation
happens.
20. ANUS
•Anus- It lets you know
whether the contents
are liquid, gas, or solid.
The anus is
surrounded by
sphincter muscles that
control of movement
of stool.
21. LIVER
•It stores some
nutrients, and
releases them into
the blood according
to the activities and
needs of the body
(helps the body
maintain
homeostasis)
22. GALL BLADDER
Bile (enzyme) flows
from the gall
bladder along the
bile duct into the
intestine to aid in
chemical
digestion.
24. Parts Function
Mouth or Oral
Cavity
Inside the mouth are many accessory organs that aid in the digestion of food—the
tongue, teeth, and salivary glands.
Pharynx or Throat a funnel-shaped tube connected to the posterior end of the mouth.
Esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the pharynx to the stomach. It carries swallowed
masses of chewed food along its length
Stomach a muscular sac that, contains hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes that
continue the digestion of food that began in the mouth.
Small intestine or
lower
gastrointestinal tract
absorption of nutrients takes place . around 90% of all nutrients have been
extracted from the food that entered it.
Large intestine absorbs water and contains many symbiotic bacteria that aid in the breaking down
of wastes to extract some small amounts of nutrients. Feces in the large intestine
exit the body through the anal canal.
Accessory Organs
Liver Produce bile and its secretion into the small intestine
Gall bladder The gallbladder is used to store and recycle excess bile
Pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine to complete the chemical

Learning Task 5: Draw a if the given situation shows taking care of your digestive system, and a if not.
______1. Eat a high-fiber diet. ...
______2. Eating spicy food always cause it burns fat easily.
______3. Pamper yourself with sweets.
______4 Drink plenty of water.
______5. Add probiotics to your diet .
