In Module 8: Developing your people, you have explored the key components of an effective
performance evaluation. This exercise allows you to practice writing performance feedback.
The table on the next page includes an example in grey text. Delete the example when you
have reviewed it, and complete the table for an employee within your business. You can choose
any employee, but you should not identify who they are, or share this performance review. Base
your review on their performance over the past year.
Employer rating
In this section of the table, you should rate the employee’s performance based on your own
observations, and comments made by other members of the team. If applicable, you should
also consider supplier or customer feedback. Do not discuss this rating with the employee until
they have provided you with their own rating.
Employee rating
In this section of the table, you should add the employee’s rating of their own performance. The
rating should be provided by the employee after a performance evaluation has taken place.
Compare their rating against your own to identify any discrepancies. Consider how you will
manage their expectations, and deliver feedback in a way that empowers the employee to
improve. You should then identify relevant action steps.
Rating criteria
1 = Exceptional performance
2 = Exceeding expectations
3 = Meeting expectations
4 = Marginal performance

  • 1. v In Module 8: Developing your people, you have explored the key components of an effective performance evaluation. This exercise allows you to practice writing performance feedback. The table on the next page includes an example in grey text. Delete the example when you have reviewed it, and complete the table for an employee within your business. You can choose any employee, but you should not identify who they are, or share this performance review. Base your review on their performance over the past year. Employer rating In this section of the table, you should rate the employee’s performance based on your own observations, and comments made by other members of the team. If applicable, you should also consider supplier or customer feedback. Do not discuss this rating with the employee until they have provided you with their own rating. Employee rating In this section of the table, you should add the employee’s rating of their own performance. The rating should be provided by the employee after a performance evaluation has taken place. Compare their rating against your own to identify any discrepancies. Consider how you will manage their expectations, and deliver feedback in a way that empowers the employee to improve. You should then identify relevant action steps.
