Welcome to HouseTrip: How Big Can It Get? - Presentation by Arnaud Bertrand, Founder, CEO & Chairman of HouseTrip at the NOAH 2013 Conference in London, Old Billingsgate on the 14th of November 2013.
3. It all started with a trip
“Having our own home in a foreign city, being able to really feel
the local pulse, eating our homemade food around our dining
table, we loved it all”
4. 4 years into the company, we have 200 staff
and very strong growth

5. Happy guests is the backbone of our growth
“HouseTrip guests have satisfaction scores 7 times the travel
industry average”
6. So, how big can it get?
By all logic, the answer is
very very big
7. Fact 1: the travel industry is the world’s
largest
In 2012, it
contributed 9.3% of
the world’s GDP*
*Travel & Tourism Economic impact 2013 World, WTTC
8. Fact 2: accommodation is a huge sub-sector
of travel
When they travel, people
spend on average 35% of
their budget on
accommodation*
*Eurostat, 2012 data from 16 European countries
9. Fact 3: same price/same conditions, people
prefer an entire home to a hotel room
Well… not an established fact… but it
makes sense!
OR
16sqm room in a 3-star hotel, central
London
85sqm 2-bedroom
apartment, central London
166€ a night
143€ a night
10. Fact 4: the supply is almost unlimited
Today, 3Mio European homes get
regularly rented out to tourists.*
That’s only 1.5% of European
homes**
(or 10% of non-primary
residences).
*Radius Global Market Research 2011
**Housing Statistics in the European Union 2010, Dutch Ministry of the Interior
11. Fact 4: the supply is almost unlimited
In fact, there are almost as many
holiday rentals in Europe today as
there are hotel rooms: 3Mio vs
3.9Mio*!
*Travel & Tourism 2011, WTTC
12. So… why isn’t it bigger already?
If we look at Europe only, why are
there 5 times less holiday rental
bookings than hotel bookings?
13. 3 main reasons
Reason 1:
location, location, location
Europe
Hotel rooms
Holiday rentals
Paris
Hotel rooms
Holiday rentals
14. 3 main reasons
Reason 2:
same price/same
conditions, people prefer an
entire home to a hotel room
15. 3 main reasons
85sqm 2-bedroom
apartment, central London
143€ a night
This is suddenly much less
attractive if you’re told that:
- To book it, you’ll need to go
through a process that’ll take
days
- You have no guarantee
whatsoever that the property is
as-described or even exists
16. 3 main reasons
Reason 3:
Hosts typically list on several
websites –consolidation and
implementation of standards is
required to go beyond today’s
adopters
17. That’s where we come in
We’re not only consolidating an
existing – massive – market.
As we go along, we’re also solving
its biggest problems – the “same
conditions” problems –
and that will make tomorrow’s
market an order of magnitude
bigger.
