SMAC
SMAC is an integration of Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud Computing
on one stack, where each function enables another to maximize their effect.
 SMAC is the new enterprise IT model delivering an organization that is more
connective, collaborative, real-time and productive.
 It is referred to as “Fifth wave of Corporate IT”.
 SMAC provides benefits on both sides ,Consumer as well as Enterprises.
 On the customer side, customer can avail services and products anywhere and
anytime.
 While on the Business or Enterprise side, it provides better marketing facilities
using social media, better interaction with customers using mobiles and clouds
and better tools to analyse their data to make business strategies.
 The real promise of SMAC technologies is not necessarily their individual
contributions or their cost savings and process efficiencies for IT, but their
potential to support the continued digitization and automation of business
models and processes.
 SMAC is leading to Digital Industrial Revolution.
 It creates an ecosystem that allows a business to improve its operations and
get closer to the customer with minimal overhead and maximum reach.
Introduction
continued….
 SOCIAL
 Social media has provided businesses with new ways to reach and interact with customers.
 Social media like Facebook, YouTube are used to advertise and promote products and services.
 MOBILE
 Mobile devices have changed the way people access digital content. Smartphones and tablets have
brought rich, digital content to the fingertips of consumers.
 Shoppers are increasingly using their mobile devices for everything from browsing to comparing to
buying products
 Ranging from simple apps dealing with mail, calendar, stock prices and weather to complex
enterprise apps, which enable users to access SCM, CRM and other analysis tools.
 ANALYTICS
 Companies are using analytics for everything from driving growth to reducing cost improving
operational excellence to recruiting better people to completely transforming their business
strategy.
 Analytics allow businesses to understand how, when and where people consume certain goods
and services. Various E-commerce firms analyse sales trends and even forecast the demands for
products.
 CLOUD COMPUTING
 It allows to set up a virtual office which provides them the flexibility of connecting to business
anywhere, any time.
 It reduces the cost of managing and maintaining IT systems.
 It allows employees to be more flexible in their work practices like accessing data from home or
even on holiday.
 Collaboration in a cloud environment gives business the ability to communicate and share more
easily when people are working on a project across different locations.
 The media company Netflix has successfully harnessed the power of SMAC. When a Netflix
member streams a TV show from the Netflix cloud to their iPad, they are given the option of
signing into Netflix with Facebook's social login. After viewing a show, members are given
multiple ways to provide social feedback via rating with stars ,writing reviews and/or sharing
with their friends on Facebook or Twitter. Customer data is stored in the cloud and Netflix can
break down its analysis to such a granular a level that its recommendation engine can
personalize suggestions for individual family members who share the same account.
 Retailers are strategically deploying the SMAC Stack across key business processes to combine
the best of virtual and physical retail shopping experiences. Now a customer’s mobile device can
signal store management while they’re shopping. Customers can compare products, get
information and redeem targeted offers from the Cloud while in store.
 Medical device manufacturers are modernizing the remote monitoring process and minimizing
office visits for both patients and clinicians. By deploying cloud-based mobility services that
deliver full PDF reports via their iPhone, clinicians can provide instant remote care. The network
also has the potential to use analytics to push out personalized insights, based on the patient’s
response to treatment.
 All web native companies like Facebook, Google, Amazon have adopted it.
 Older technology companies have bought their way in. Example-
 Microsoft- Microsoft Office gets SMAC’d by introducing Office 365 and Microsoft
office goes Social with Yammer.
 Apple – Apple tries to SMAC iTunes using Ping. Also Apple buys Topsy, a Social Media
Analytics Firm.
Trends
 In the next 5 years, there are three emerging market forces ,whose effects
are already being felt across all industries and geographies, impacting not
only the nature of IT, but also the nature of how we conduct business itself.
 SMAC
 Digitization of business models and processes
 Many industries have already experienced this disruption, such as
those in media and entertainment whose primary product or service
has become completely digitized (e.g. books, music, movies, maps),
the next wave is now being felt as other industries see aspects of
their physical value chain become ever-more technology-enabled
and optimized.
 The Information Inflection Point
 The exponential growth in computing devices and data brought
about by the Internet economy, the consumerization of IT, and the
emerging “Internet of Things” is placing new requirements and
burdens on the data centre in terms of being able to collect,
manage and interpret this information to support effective business
decision-making. According to Cisco, the number of devices
connected to IP networks will be nearly three times as high as the
global population in 2017.
Trends
 In the topic chosen, SMAC, I have interest in the field of Social and
Cloud Computing.
 If an internship is provided, my first preference would be to work in the
field of Social and second preference would be in field of Cloud
Computing.
 In Social part, I would like to devise an efficient graph based algorithm
for finding online presence of a user on various social networks.
For example, Facebook “friends” are good
representation of the personal acquaintances of a user, but probably a
poor representation of his/her working contacts, while LinkedIn is a good
representation of work contacts but not a very good representation of
personal relationships. For these reasons, identifying all the accounts
belonging to the same individual across different social services is a
fundamental step in the study of social science.
