Origin of Mother’s Day goes back to the era
of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots
of Mother’s Day history can also be traced in
UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrat-
ed much before the festival saw the light of
the day in US. However, the celebration of
the festival as it is seen today is a recent phe-
nomenon and not even a hundred years old.
Thanks to the hard work of the pioneer-
ing women of their times, Julia Ward Howe
and Anna Jarvis that the day came into ex-
istence. Today the festival of Mothers day
is celebrated across 46 countries (though
on different dates) and is a hugely popular
affair. Millions of people across the globe
take the day as an opportunity to honor
their mothers, thank them for their efforts
in giving them life, raising them and be-
ing their constant support and well wisher.
Anna Jarvis is recognised as the Founder
of Mothers Day in US. Though Anna Jar-
vis never married and never had kids, she
is also known as the Mother of Mothers
Day, an apt title for the lady who worked
hard to bestow honor on all mothers.
Anna Jarvis got the inspiration of celebrating
Mothers Day from her own mother Mrs Anna
Marie Reeves Jarvis in her childhood. An ac-
tivist and social worker, Mrs Jarvis used to ex-
press her desire that someday someone must
honor all mothers, living and dead, and pay
tribute to the contributions made by them.
A loving daughter, Anna never forgot her
mothers word and when her mother died
in 1905, she resolved to fulfill her moth-
ers desire of having a mothers day. Grow-
ing negligent attitude of adult Americans
towards their mothers and a desire to
honor her mothers soared her ambitions.
To begin with Anna, send Carnations in the
churchserviceinGrafton,WestVirginiatohon-
or her mother. Carnations were her mothers
favorite flower and Anna felt that they sym-
bolised a mothers pure love. Later Anna along
with her supporters wrote letters to people
in positions of power lobbying for the official
declaration of Mothers Day holiday. The hard
work paid off. By 1911, Mother’s Day was
celebrated in almost every state in the Union
and on May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wil-
son signed a Joint Resolution designating
the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
History of Mother’s Day: Pres-
ent Day Celebrations
Today Mothers Day is celebrated in several
countries including US, UK, India, Denmark,
Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Mexico,
Canada, China, Japan and Belgium. People
take the day as an opportunity to pay trib-
ute to their mothers and thank them for all
their love and support. The day has become
hugely popular and in several countries
phone lines witness maximum traffic. There
is also a tradition of gifting flowers, cards
and others gift to mothers on the Mothers
Day. The festival has become commercial-
ised to a great extent. Florists, card manu-
facturers and gift sellers see huge business
potential in the day and make good money
through a rigorous advertising campaign.
It is unfortunate to note that Ms Anna Jar-
vis, who devoted her life for the declaration
of Mothers Day holiday was deeply hurt to
note the huge commercialisation of the day.

Cooking Oils Decoded
If there’s one thing we know about cooking oils, it’s that they’re
really hard to keep straight—particularly in regards to how
they impact our health and what types of oils to use when.
If you often wonder, “Is the oil I’m using to roast these veg-
gies protecting my heart?” Or, “Am I ingesting damaging free
radicals with this stir-fry?” You’ve come to the right place!
A recent survey of MyFitnessPal members validated exactly what we
suspected: we have a serious cooking oil conundrum on our hands.
1. Some of us still cook with harmful fats. While a whop-
ping 94% reported having a bottle of heart-healthy ol-
ive oil at home, nearly 2 in 10 people still cook with veg-
etable shortening, which contains harmful transfats.
2. The majority of home cooks only have a couple of oils in
their cabinets. 54% of those surveyed rely on just one or
two cooking oils for all of their culinary needs. So basical-
ly, most of us own olive oil and maybe one other type. Maybe.
3. Over half of those surveyed think olive oil is the healthiest option.
That probably explains why we all own it, and why it’s the top logged
cooking oil in the MyFitnessPal food database. (Coconut oil came in
second with nearly 25% of the votes for being the healthiest oil.)
While revealing, the data brings up still more questions:
1. What can we bake with besides Crisco?
2. Can we get by with just one or two cooking oils?
3. Which ones pack those heart-healthy omega-3s? And, proba-
bly most importantly:
4. Can we deep-fry with olive oil? (Not that any of us eat deep-
fried foods…)
To clear up some of the confusion, here’s a visual guide to help
you navigate the cooking oil aisle and select the best oils, both
for cooking and nutritional benefits. You’ll also find a glos-
sary below to help you make sense of the pretty pie charts.

DIETARY FAT GLOSSARY
Unsaturated Fat: Generally recognized for their potential health ben-
efits, unsaturated fats are largely liquid at room temperature and are
grouped into two categories:
Monounsaturated: Commonly found in olives, seeds, and nuts, mono-
unsaturated fats have been shown to improve blood cholesterol levels
and decrease risk of heart disease. They may also benefit insulin levels
and blood sugar control.
Polyunsaturated: Like monounsaturated, polyunsaturated fats also
seem to have a positive impact on blood cholesterol and decrease risk
of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. While the body can make some
polyunsaturated fats on its own, two essential fatty acids, omega-3 and
omega-6, must be obtained from the diet.
Omega-3: A type of polyunsaturated fat show to be especially benefi-
cial for heart heart. Omega-3s are commonly found in walnuts, seeds
(particularly flaxseed), and fatty fish (like salmon, arctic char, and
mackerel). They appear to decrease the risk of coronary artery disease,
protect against irregular heartbeats, and help lower blood pressure
levels. While still good for you, the body cannot convert and use plant-
based omega-3 fatty acids as well as those found in fish.
Omega-6: A type of polyunsaturated oil commonly found in corn oil,
soybean oil, and sunflower oil, as well as nuts and seeds. Research
shows some omega-6 fatty acids tend to promote inflammation, but
not all.
Saturated Fat: Mostly solid at room temperature, common sources
include red meat and dairy products, and certain plants, like coconut
and avocado. While saturated fats have been associated with high
cholesterol and heart disease, research suggests plant-based saturated
fats behave differently than animal-based saturated fats and trans-fats,
and may have a neutral impact on cholesterol.

4. Sadhguru explains why in India, rivers were
not seen as geographical entities but as
life-giving gods and goddesses, and how this
was an important part of human wellbeing
Sadhguru: If you look at the people we wor-
ship in this culture, whether Shiva, Rama or
Krishna, they were people who walked this
geography at some time. They went through
many more trials and tribulations that most
human beings do. The reason we worship
them is because no matter what situations
happened around them, no matter what
challenges life threw at them, they did not
deviate from their inner nature. We worship
them because they remained untouched.
In many ways, a river represents that: it
doesn’t matter what kind of people touch it,
it remains pure because its nature is to flow.
In this culture, we did not see rivers as just
water bodies. We see them as life-giving gods
or goddesses. To a thinking mind, which is
confined to the limitations of its logic, this
may sound foolish or very rudimentary. “A riv-
er is a river, how is it a goddess?” If you lock
up such a person in a room without giving him
water for three days, and then show him a
glass of water, he will bow down to it – not to
a river, just a glass of water! What we call wa-
ter, air, food and the earth that we walk upon
are not commodities. We never saw rivers as
just geographical happenings. We always saw
them as life-making material because over
70% of our body itself is water. Whenever we
look for life, we look for a drop of water first!
Today, in the world, we are building medical
infrastructure in such a way that we seem
to expect that everyone will be seriously
ill some day. There was a time when there
used to be one doctor for the whole town
and it was enough. Today, every street has
five doctors and it’s not enough. This shows
how we are living. When we forget how to
live, when we do not respect what makes
our life – the earth that we walk upon, the
air we breathe, the water we drink and the
very sky that holds us in place – when we
have no respect and reverence for that,
how they behave within us is very different.
If we want to live well, water plays the most
important role because 72% of the body is
water. Today, there is substantial scientific
evidence to show that water has tremen-
dous memory. If you just so much as gen-
erate a thought looking at the water, the
structure of the water will change. We have
always known this in this culture but today,
modern science has done an enormous
amount of experimentation on this. Scien-
tists are saying that water is a fluid com-
puter! The memory of how you treat water
remains for a long period. So, how we treat
water before it touches our body changes
the quality of everything in our system. If
we keep the waters in our body pure, health
and wellbeing are very easily taken care of.
Bhuta Shuddhi
The fundamental science of transcending or
transforming human life is called bhuta shud-
dhi – the cleansing of the five elements. This
is a miraculous process in the sense that ev-
erything – this body, this planet, the solar sys-
tem and the universe – is a play of the five
elements: earth, water, fire, air and space.
If one wants to transcend his own physical
nature, the most fundamental and effec-
tive way of doing this is the process of bhu-
ta shuddhi. The yogic science is an evolution
out of bhuta shuddhi process, the science
of working with your elements. If you take
charge of your elements, everything is in
your control. One who masters the five ele-
ments is considered master of the universe.
Today’s so-called modern life has absolutely
no reverence for the substances that make our
life.Ifyouwanttobehealthy,wellandsuccess-
ful,itisimportantthattheelementswithinyou
cooperate. If they don’t cooperate, nothing
will work. It is time we brought back the cul-
ture of treating the elements with reverence.
Editor’s Note: The Bhuta Shuddhi process is
taught by Isha Hatha Yoga teachers around
the world. Find a teacher near you. The pro-
cess is also part of the 21-day Isha Hatha
Yoga program, that will be conducted be-
tween May 26 and Jun 15 at the Isha Yoga
Center. More information at www.ishaha-

Kokum or Garcinia Indica is a fruit which is famous for its healthy and refreshing cool drink. Kokum juice is not only delicious but it also has
several health benefits.
Ayurvedic physicians have long used kokum to treat sores, prevent infection, improve digestion, alleviate diarrhea and constipation,
lessen arthritis pain, cure ear infections and heal stomach ulcers. Kokum is a purple berry which has been long used in
Ayurveda to prevent infection, treat sores, cure ear infections, heal stomach ulcers, improve digestion, lessen arthritis pain
and alleviate diarrhea & constipation.
Kokum is a rich source of powerful anti-oxidant vitamin C in the form
of citric acid, malic acid, acetic acid, ascorbic acid, hydro citric acid and
hydroxycitric acid. Garcinol is the major active ingredient of Kokum and
it has antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflamma-
tory properties. It does not contain cholesterol or saturated fats. It is
low in calories and rich in dietary fibres. Fresh Kokum fruit high-
ly contains B-complex vitamins such as niacin, folates and thiamin which
are co-factors of many biochemical reactions. The seed of kokum contains 2
3-30% oil and it is used in preparation of medicines, cosmetics and confectionery.
1) Kokum juice is very popular in India especially during hot summer.
It is delicious and has a cooling effect on the body. It is very refreshing drink.
It not only quenches your thirst, but also helps to pre-
vents dehydration and sunstroke due to heat.
2) Kokum juice improves the digestion and appetite. It is also used to treat piles and dysentery.
3) It promotes cell regeneration and repair. It helps to reduce fever and allergic reactions.
4) It contains Hydroxy Acetic Acid (HCA) that helps to decrease the rate of conversion of excessive carbohydrate into fats.
5) It also helps in suppression of fatty acid synthesis and lypogenesis and thus, bringing about weight loss.
6) It is known to fight cholesterol strengthens the cardio-vascular system and stabilizes liver function.
7) Kokum aids to weight loss. The active ingredient Hydroxy Acetic Acid (HCA) has been found to be a good anti-obesity agent as it suppress-
es lipogenesis and converts excess calories into glycogen thus bringing about weight loss.
8) It can relieve you from gastric problems like acidity, flatulence, constipation and indigestion.
9) It is low in calories and contains no saturated fats or cholesterol and is rich in dietary fibre. It regenerates fat metabolism.
10) It is a very rich source of minerals like potassium, magnesium and manganese. Potassium helps to control blood pressure & heart rate
and thus, it gives protection against coronary heart diseases and stroke. It also contains carbohydrates in sufficient amounts.
Researchers at the Institute of Science and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai, India,
have shown that kokum’s antioxidant activities are stronger than those of many other spices, fruits and vegetables. Their re-
search, which involved rats, was published in “Current Science.” Researchers from Wayne State University in Detroit,
Michigan, and the Patil University of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research in Pune, India, published an article in the
“Journal of Hematology & Oncology” suggesting that kokum could be a useful anticancer agent. However, research in humans is
still needed.
