Research and Innovation Actions
Activities aimed to obtain new knowledge and/or improved technology,
product, process or decision. May include basic and applied research,
development and technology integration, testing and validation.
Duration: 3-5 years
Main participation criteria: at least three independent legal entities from
countries of EU or associated with HORIZON 2020. Participants from any other
countries (including Russia) can join actions as an additional consortium
partner.
The most common type of projects.
13. Projects types
Innovation Actions
Activities aimed at creating schemes, planning or
designing a new, modified or improved product,
process or service. It may include the creation of
a prototype or demonstration model, tests, pilot
implementation, a large-scale validation of the
product and production for commercial purposes.
Duration: 2-3 years
Main participation criteria: at least three
independent legal entities from countries of EU
or associated with HORIZON 2020. Participants
from any other countries (including Russia) can
join actions as an additional consortium partner.
This type of project is most common in HORIZON
2020 “Industrial Leadership” section.
14. Projects types
Coordination and Support Actions
Standardization, dissemination, awareness-raising and communication, networking,
service coordination and support, as well as other activities on strategic planning,
creation of communities and coordination of programmes in different countries.
Duration: 1-2 years
Main participation criteria: at least one independent legal entity from countries of
EU or associated with HORIZON 2020. Participants from any other countries
(including Russia) can join actions as an additional consortium partner.
These types of projects are most common in “Industrial Leadership” and “Societal
Challenges” sections.
15. Projects types
SME Instrument
An instrument for support of small and medium-
sized enterprises. Staged financing for full
innovation cycle, as well as additional services
such as training and support.
Duration: 1st phase 6 months, 2nd phase 1-2 years
Main participation criteria: at least One
commercial small or medium-sized company,
registered in the EU or in a country, associated
with HORIZON 2020.
Presently the number of such projects is limited.
16. Projects types
ERA-NET Instrument (ERA-NET Co-fund)
A co-financing programme inside HORIZON 2020 aimed to support partnerships
of government organizations, including joint initiatives between the EU
countries. Additional funding from the EU may be held for international calls.
Initiative is being implemented with the help of “programmes co-financing
measure.“ It can be used at any stage of the programme of cooperation.
Basic and mandatory component of ERA-NET instruments is a joint tender, which
is co-financed by all participating organizations for international research and /
or innovation projects.
Research and innovation funding organizations from any country (including Russia) can
participate in consortium under this co-financing ERA-NET programmes.

Exhaustive list of countries in annex to work programme (but: no longer BRIC +
Mexico in this list!)
For other countries, funding only in exceptional cases!
Such funding is provided for in a bilateral scientific and technological agreement.
Funding for entities established in these countries are included in the call text.
The Commission deems the participation of the entity essential for carrying out the
project.
