3. Psalm 6
English Standard Version (ESV)
O Lord, Deliver My Life
To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments;
according to The Sheminith.
A Psalm of David.
And the music starts
stringed instruments
playing as the soul expresses sorrow
4. 6
O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger,
    nor discipline me in your wrath.
A ïŹrst fear is confronted:
if God angry with me?
the strings play
even as the soul pours out its
concerns
5. 2
Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;
    heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled.
His suffering is so
intense he physically feels it
Appeal for grace made
6. 3
My soul also is greatly troubled.
    But you, O Lordâhow long?
Like or portending Jesus sorrow
in the garden who will say
âmy soul is exceedingly troubledâ
A send issue is raised - How long?
not why but how long?
and uses two incomplete phrases
but you oh lordâŠ. (not ïŹnishing the
thought)
how long (not ïŹnishing the question)
as if to show how intense the
effect of the suffering on the speaker
âmy soul is exceedingly
troubledâ
7. 4
Turn, O Lord, deliver my life;
    save me for the sake of your steadfast love.
5
For in death there is no remembrance of you;
    in Sheol who will give you praise?
He appeals on the basis of Godâs character to turn to him
ironically turn being the same Hebrew word as repent
He appeals on the basis of Godâs glory
8. 6
I am weary with my moaning;
    every night I ïŹood my bed with tears;
    I drench my couch with my weeping.
7
My eye wastes away because of grief;
    it grows weak because of all my foes.
A bed swimming in tears
tears so persistent that his eyes
are being affected
9. 8
Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
    for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
9
The Lord has heard my plea;
    the Lord accepts my prayer.
and yet an upturn of hope
the Lord has heard
hope rises
10. 10
All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled;
    they shall turn back and be put to shame in a moment.
and his enemies will be dealt with by God
he did not bring up his enemies in the
lament till now
rather appealed to God
hope rises
