A victory song of David sung in a minor key, a lament
Living in a cave is not usually a bountiful abundant life
David writes this song remembering a time when he was on the run and hiding in a cave
David said in Psalm 1 that the Lord knows the way of the righteous and here the Lord knows the way of the righteous when they are faint
He knows God hears and says so 7 ways
He looks around himself and declares 'no one cares for my soul'
In the end David looks forward in faith knowing he will be surrounded by the righteous and God will be bountiful
2. Flashback.
A song of despair led off where the people
shed tears in Babylon under rule of a pagan king
Harps set aside
and they could not sing
3. Flashback.
David picks up his harp and sings
under the rule of the King of Babylon
but God will someday make all kings sing to Him
victory coming
but for now?
we sing
sometimes
in a minor key
4. Psalm 142 English Standard Version (ESV)
You Are My Refuge
A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer.
142
songs from a cave
5.
With my voice I cry out to the Lord;
with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord.
2
I pour out my complaint before him;
I tell my trouble before him.
Four times crying in first person
6.
3
When my spirit faints within me,
you know my way!
In the path where I walk
they have hidden a trap for me.
The Lord knows the way of the righteous
in psalm 1
especially when their heart is faint
7.
4
Look to the right and see:
there is none who takes notice of me;
no refuge remains to me;
no one cares for my soul.
in the world no one cares for my soul
8.
5
I cry to you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.”
6
Attend to my cry,
for I am brought very low!
Deliver me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me!
you know my way
you are my refuge
9.
7
Bring me out of prison,
that I may give thanks to your name!
The righteous will surround me,
for you will deal bountifully with me.
I was alone in the world
I felt it
but I will be surrounded
you will deal with me bountifully
