Recent Employment
2015 – Present Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) – Consultant
I am one of a seven person Voluntary Sector Consultative Panel to this statutory inquiry, the largest in
UK history. The primary task of this group is to design safe and effective processes for victims and
survivors to participate in the disparate activities of this Inquiry. On-going includes design of sector-
wide partnership and engagement processes and on-going support for those choosing to engage.
2008 - 2016 SurvivorsUK Ltd - Director, Business Development
I diversified and increased the funding of this charity by over 500% and designed and implemented
activities that saw service access increase by over 400%.
Key Achievements:
Project Delivery: I am an incisive and process led project manager, using analysis, UX and
on-going research to inform development and delivery of small and large projects. For IICSA, I
have recently led the development of the national Truth Project strand of this independent
Statutory Inquiry. At SurvivorsUK my work included conceptualising, developing and launching
the national Male Survivor website and embedded digital emotional support service for the
Ministry of Justice.
Fundraising: Successful in multi-level fundraising approaches that match funder aspiration
with organisational need, including management of grants from application to final reporting and
assessment. Particular strength in Statutory and Trust/Foundation approaches with a reputation
for establishing strong, on-going relationships with funders and influencing grant makers to
2. create opportunities in areas of minimal previous interaction. Significant experience of
developing and delivering fundraising strategies and activities.
Finance: A strong financial leader with qualification in charity accounting processes and
significant experience in the financial management, budgeting and reporting requirements of
small to medium sized organisations.
Organisational Management: People management of a full time and consultant team of up
to 14 people. Ensuring that organisations are fit for purpose and able to deliver against plans and
strategic goals. Highlights include review and amendment of constitutional and mission related
documents; strategic planning and delivery; policy and procedure review to ensure best practice
is entrenched and enforced.
Strategy: Working closely with Board of Directors to develop and deliver strategy and establish
performance and goal analysis set against the high-level strategic objectives. That work involved
on-going internal analysis of our offerings and performance, setting key performance measures
and methods of evaluation, stakeholder and environmental analysis and the review and
modification of our vision, mission and values.
Impact: Oversaw design and implementation of appropriate tools to track and measure outputs
and outcomes within a central Theory of Change approach, using recognised commercial and
sector specific tools to enable stakeholder and environmental analysis.
Previous Career Experience
I developed a broad portfolio of management and business skills running a Communications and Events
consultancy (May Communications) for 6 years. The challenges of setting up and running my own
business included the detail of corporate execution, employing and managing contractors and workers,
pitching for and winning new business and managing client relationships to ensure satisfaction and
repeat business. At sale, the business was trading more than £250k in client fees and sponsorship
income.
In previous years, I honed planning and delivery skills through positions with boutique public relations
firms (specialising in television programme publicity). This led to an in-house role at NBC Europe (1997-
1999), initially handling programme and B2B communications and latterly concentrating on the launch
of CNBC in Europe as acting Head of Press. I managed the European launch of the CNBC brand and
product, handling trade and consumer public relations as well as the full personality launch for
commentators and on-camera staff in a multi-country roll-out.
