Electromagnetic waves or EM waves are waves that are created as a result of vibrations between an electric field and a magnetic field. What causes the electric and the mgnetic field in the air? Solution Let see how we can truly understand what EMwaves are. Electromagnetic waves are a form through which energy is transmitted. These waves are made up of electric and magnetic fields. They can travel through a medium (such as air) as well as through vacuum. Thus, we can imagine EM waves as packets of energy. Light is an EM wave. Light is made up of oscillating electric and magnetic fields. However, light itself also acts as a particle (wave-particle duality). Thus there is no other particle or medium required to cause the fields. Thus, no component of air causes the electric and magnetic fields in EM waves. Rather EM themselves are particles (so to say) causing the oscillating electric and magnetic fields, irrespective of medium. .
