Knowing your learning style can help you make the most of the teaching styles of your instructors. Usually the teaching style of an instructor reflects his or her own learning style. Since this is true, your particular learning style may work well with the way some instructors teach and can be a mismatch with other instructors. This is where working on your weaker points will help you to break new ground in your learning.
When we first hear about learning styles, some people think that the next goal is to find ways of teaching that apply to certain styles. Actually, there are more powerful ways to use our knowledge of learning styles. One is to recognize our own styles and capitalize on the strengths we already have; therefore, putting material into the ways that you prefer to learn should be your goal.
A and B above are examples of Content independent styles.
But today, we are going to talk about teaching styles that are objective driven. Content matters.
For community preceptors, most of the teaching is done face to face with a learner in short spurts (5-20 minutes). You are talking to the learner.
Today we will dissect what happens during this 'brief interaction”, focusing on these verbal teaching styles.
You see, THESE styles not only determine how information is conveyed, but also WHAT is conveyed; especially with respect to the clinical thinking process and with affective issues.
By identifying and understanding your learning style, you will be able to capitalize on your strengths and improve your learning efficiency. We each learn and process information in different ways, and you probably didn't realize this because most of us attended schools where teachers delivered instruction in one way. Most teachers talked to us, we answered their questions, and then we took pencil-and-paper-based tests. So, in fact, schools ended up teaching us one way to learn and didn't help or encourage us to learn in our unique styles.
You and I receive new information every day that we live, and understanding how we naturally take in and process that information will go a long way toward making us life-long learners.
