Japan Government Officials Eat Fukushima Rice to Reassure Citizens

faced much difficulty, as they found their lives changed drastically. Many had to find new work, for example,
when
they
were
evacuated.
About 8 months after the accident, rice samples from Onami in Fukushima were tested and found to have
radioactive contamination above the government limit.
This resulted in a ban on rice from Onami. However, districts farther away from the factory had less severe
contamination, and government officials now say rice grown there is safe to eat.To prove their point,
government officials will eat rice from the Yamakiya district in Fukushima for nine days, according to local
media. Officials are confident that the rice contains no radioactive substances, and are willing to bolster that
claim by eating it themselves. Some officials have already sampled the rice and Parliamentary Vice
Environment Minister Tomoko Ukishima insists it “tasted especially good after the great effort put into
cultivating the crop.”

Oryza Afternoon Recap – Chicago Rough Rice Futures Break Through Support at
$15.500; Grains Recover Following Yesterday’s Losses
Dec 11, 2013
Chicago rough rice futures for January delivery settled 8.5 cents per cwt (about $2 per ton) lower at $15.475 per
cwt (about $341 per ton). Rough rice futures returned to their trend of lower prices, closing below the closely
watched $15.500 per cwt (about $342 per ton) level for the first time since early November. Market participants
noted continued selling interest throughout the session, while some pointed to sporadic buying which pushed
prices back towards unchanged from time to time.
Rough rice futures continue to react to market specific influences and were seen lower despite a recovery in the
other grains today; soybeans finished the day about 0.4% higher at $13.4400 per bushel; wheat finished about
0.3% higher at $6.4175 per bushel; and corn finished the day about 0.8% higher at $4.3925 per bushel.U.S.
stocks continued to slide lower Wednesday, with the S&P seeing its biggest loss in nearly five weeks, amid
worries over the possibility of a pullback in the Federal Reserve's stimulus program following the provisional
budget deal in Washington. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined nearly 100 points, falling from its
psychologically-important 16,000 mark. The S&P 500 fell below 1,800, while the Nasdaq also slid. Most key
S&P sectors were in the red, dragged by health care and materials. U.S. stock markets are currently trading
down about 0.4%, gold is trading about 0.3% lower, crude oil is seen trading about 1.2% lower, and the U.S.
dollar is seen trading about 0.1% lower at about 2:00pm Chicago time.
Turning to the daily continuation chart of Chicago rough rice futures for January delivery, the market broke
through and closed below a key point of support today finishing below $15.500 per cwt (about $342 per ton) for
the first time in weeks. Today’s action is seen as a further bearish development for the market and provides a

5. negative outlook for tomorrow’s trade direction. However, a continuation lower will likely face headwind
around $15.450 per cwt (about $341 per ton) provided by the lower Bollinger band. Technically the market is in
bearish territory as it has dropped below most commonly followed moving averages. Today’s trading range is
noted as $15.465-$15.565 per cwt (about $341-$343 per ton).Tuesday, there were 1,329 contracts traded, up
from 498 contracts traded on Monday. Open interest – the number of contracts outstanding – on Tuesday
decreased by 678 contracts to 7,800.

Thailand Rice Farmers Threaten to Block Roads in Protest of Late Payments
Dec 11, 2013
Farmers in Thailand are threatening to block roads in 26 provinces in protest of the government not yet paying
them for their rice pledged under the nation’s rice mortgage scheme. The head of the Thai Rice Farmers
Association told local media that farmers haven’t been paid since October and need money for the next
crop. Trying to contain the volatile situation, the Thailand Commerce Minister said more funding has been
approved, according to the National News Bureau of Thailand. This is further political fuel on massive fire of
domestic unrest.

7. Conab Projects Higher Paddy Production in 2013-14
Dec 11, 2013
Brazil’s paddy production in 2013-14 is projected at about 12.22 million tons, according to Conab, up 4% from
about 11.75 million tons in 2012-13. The year-over-year increase is due expectations for higher acreage and
higher yield, projected up 1% and 3% respectively. Increased rice acreage in the South is expected to more than
make up for falling rice area in much of the rest of Brazil.
