January update of activity for Dominican Starfish Foundation
1.
2. Lisette’s home
has been mostly
completed in
January! She and
her family will be
moving in later
this week. Thanks
to our hard-
working crew and
our donors!
3. Glenys and her boys have been
living in really rough conditions
and things have been
complicated by Covid-19 and
unemployment. They will move
into their home this week!
4. We are partnering with another local foundation to build a home
for Tuta and Chicha. We received generous donations for this home
in just a short 48 hour fundraiser!
5. One of our
dedicated
construction
teams finished
building the
Marte home on
January 15.
Thank you to
the participants
in the Cedar
Hills Golf
Course and for
Sarah Franklin
for raising
funds for this
home!
6. We were able to surprise some of our dedicated volunteers by
raising money to finish their kitchen. During the pandemic and
their unemployment, Alise and Raul have helped us with so many
projects. We are so grateful to donors who came forward to help
them have a finished kitchen (after 3 years in this condition). We
love Alise and Raul and thank them for their service. Renovations
begin February 1st.
7. The first step
happened on
Yrna’s new home
on January 27
with the
demolition of
her existing
home, preparing
to build the new
one.
Tomorrow the
digging of the
foundation will
begin.
8. The Rodriguez family have been one
our list for sponsorship for over a
year. In January we were blessed to
have them chosen by the Fackrell
family. They have raised 90% of the
funds already in January and the
home will be started very soon!
9. In January, one of our dedicated
crews was able to complete the
security wall around the school
we purchased for Youth
Upliftment International. This
will be a blessing for the children
and help keep them safe.
10. When one of our
dedicated workers
found that the
home he rented
was for sale and he
would have to
move to a new
rental, we were
able to make an
offer to the owner
and purchase the
property for him.
This is a huge
blessing for this
family!
11. Joselin lives in poverty in a home in San
Rafael de Yuma near Punta Cana. This
month, we sent money for this family to
have a bathroom. The building process is
happening right now. We hope to help
them more with their home in the future.
12. We met Miguel Martinez
and his 3 sons by a
referral. They had no
food, barely any clothing
and live in a disastrous
place. We have been
able to start a fund to
build them a home.
Fundraising for this is
continuing.
13. Distribution Center
This month we started building the second story on our
distribution/community center. The funds were raised from our
annual auction and matched by doTerra Healing Hands Foundation.
We also had a donation from Gay Lee Foundation. Thanks to all our
generous donors!
14. Anyelis and Anelyo were both born
with brittle bone disease. Their
bones just spontaneously break.
Medications and treatments are
expensive. The family saved for a
long time to purchase land to build
a home. Then they were faced with
the medical problems of their
children and have never been able
to do this. To compound the
problem, the pandemic has left the
family with no income and rent
payments have become impossible.
Thanks to generous donors,
we completed fundraising for
this family in January. Their
new home will start soon.
15. In January, 4 young volunteers traveled to the Dominican
Republic to help with foundation activities for the next 6
months. Among other humanitarian services rendered,
Ashdon and Samatha Fackrell are teach English, Stirling
Fackrell is volunteering in the home builds and Hope
Roach is teaching dance!
16. We have 25 families sponsored who receive food 2-4 times each month.
These families are in San Rafael de Yuma, Llanos de Perez, Imbert, Javillar,
Maggiolo and more. Thanks to our donors for blessing lives!
17. January 11 Facebook Post:
“Luisa is 18 years old. She
cares for her younger
brothers Jose and Ramon.
Their mother died when
they were younger and
their father is an alcoholic
who does not care for
them. Luisa looks for
housekeeping jobs to feed
her siblings. She was
sponsored during our
Christmas campaign by the
Chan Family. Thanks to
them and to John and
Kathy Enman, Luisa
received a new stove this
month. Luisa sleeps in a
chair pictured below and
the two boys sleep on the
dirt floor. We hope in the
future to provide beds for
them as well.”
January 12th Facebook Post:
“Yesterday I posted about a new
stove for Luisa and said that we
hoped to get beds for them.
Miracles continue to happen!
Thanks to Tonya Greiner, Luisa and
her brothers now have beds to
sleep in!! Thank you for blessing
lives!! Until today, Luisa was
sleeping in the chair pictured
below and her brothers on the dirt
floor. She is alone at 18 years
looking after her two brothers.”
