Points to note post 2011 aids walk
1. Here are a few points that could be helpful post AIDS Walk:
Our Jewish Community Team,
organized by the San Francisco based
Jewish Community Federation and
Endowment Fund, raised over $3,000
this year. Mazel Tov to each of you as
well as to our top Jewish Community
team walker, Avidan. He raised over
$1,000 as part of his Bar Mitzvah
project!
The Jewish Community Team invited
people from all different faiths (both
Jews and non-Jews) from all over the Bay Area to walk. A few local Jewish organizations,
such as Be’chol Lashon, was an extraordinary partner in their help organizing and recruiting
attendance as well. The 100+ members of our Jewish Community team included several
expecting parents, a few young adults, tweens, babies and toddlers, seniors and everyone
(+ their pups) in between.
Our Jewish Community Team leaders appreciate your help in making an impact this year!
Thank you for spreading the word about our team, helping sponsor a walker or for
participating in the 10K San Francisco AIDS Walk by yourself or with your friends and family.
Currently 1.1 million people are living with HIV/AIDS across the United States. This is the
highest number in the 30-year-history of the epidemic and every day in San Francisco, two
more people are infected with HIV. This means that 1,000 of the 40,000 newly-infected
people in the United States each year live within the 46.9 square miles of San Francisco.
Alarmingly, rates of new HIV infections are rising once again among gay and bisexual men, the only
risk group for which this is the case.
San Francisco has been an epicenter as one of the North American cities hardest hit by
HIV/AIDS since the earliest days of the epidemic. 30-years-later our local Jewish Community
pushes through this continuing epidemic with a compassionate and caring response that
continues today. For example, did you know that in the 1980’s Congregation Sha’ar Zahav
members took care of each other, including performing the ritual washing of the body for
our deceased (Tahara), which the local burial society refused to do at that time?
Our collective donation will be dispersed by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation as grants to
strengthen HIV prevention efforts as well as for advocacy, medical care, housing and social
services programs for people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS.
Every day in San Francisco, two more people are infected with HIV.
The massive fundraising of the AIDS Walk supports the work of San Francisco AIDS
Foundation and 48 other important AIDS service organizations across the Bay Area. These
organizations range from Larkin Street Youth Services, AIDS Legal Referral Panel, Homeless
Youth Alliance, to other direct service organizations for individuals living with HIV and AIDS.
A united community, 25,000 strong, filled Golden Gate Park to take vital steps toward
ending HIV/AIDS in the Bay Area. Thank you for being a part of this incredible day!
2. Your efforts contributed to the
$3,011,245 that will keep San
Francisco AIDS Foundation leading
the way in innovative HIV
prevention programs and bold
public policy initiatives.
We are grateful for your support
as we came together to
commemorate 25 years of
heartfelt strides and lifesaving
progress in the fight against AIDS.
Your efforts mean so much to the
tens of thousands of people living with HIV locally, as well as those most vulnerable to
infection, who benefit from your dedication.
800 to 1,000 new HIV infections occur every year. The city of San Francisco has been a
leader in devising successful interventions to stop the spread of HIV, but we must do more
to prevent new infections, to make HIV testing easy, accessible and affordable, and to get
people into treatment when appropriate. The San Francisco AIDS Foundation supports the
work to ensure that this happens.
Interested in connecting with the Bay Area Jewish Community this summer? We have
plenty of going on including multiple get-togethers at the Jewish Film Festival. Take a look
