Meet Your Neighborhood Artist
Elizabeth (Bertie) Vanderliet
If you are walking by and hear some
rocking Dave Matthew’s Band music,
it’s a good indicator Elizabeth, AKA
Bertie, is in her light-filled Tetherow
casita, painting. “I love to paint. It
pushes me to feel, to describe, and to
express. I do it because it makes my
life richer and for that I am grateful!”
Bertie loves color with all its tones
and shades. She likes to describe her
work as representational, with lots of
bold color. She shared with me that
she infuses her art with enormous
love and gratitude that she hopes,
brings joy beyond the canvas.
Born in Illinois, the fourth of five kids,
Bertie’s family moved to Northern
California when she was still in
diapers. She has always gravitated
towards art and expressing herself in
creative ways. At 4 years old her prog-
ress report read, “Beth spends most
of her time at the painting easel.” She
quickly points out that she has spent a
lifetime navigating back to that easel.
Bertie graduated from CAL POLY
San Luis Obispo, earning a B.S. in
Graphic Design, with a concentration
in Photography. After working in New
York City and San Francisco with stu-
dio and architectural photographers,
she soon discovered the business side
of photography was not fulfilling for
her. Bertie made a big shift to follow
her passion for health and human
potential. She moved on to study
Rolfing Structural Integration™ in
Boulder, CO, and Sao Paulo, Brazil.
She became a Certified Advanced
Rolfer, and enjoyed a thriving prac-
tice in Walnut Creek, CA, until they
moved to the Tetherow community
for its outdoor lifestyle and beauty.
In 2017, when she and her husband,
Gary, with their three kids moved
to Bend, it was her husband that
suggested she pursue her painting
passion. “I saw moving to Bend as
an opportunity to recreate myself. I
always wanted to be an artist, but I
admit the thought of putting my art
out on display was intimidating.”
What I learned from our conversa-
tion is that Bertie brings all of her
life experience to her canvases. She
has finished The Ironman World
Championship in Hawaii at age 26,
and The Leadville 100 Mountain Bike
race at 46. She has held diverse jobs
ranging from bicycle mechanic, to
doing singing telegrams! The nick-
name “Bertie” was acquired while
soigneur to The TREK Mountain Bike
Racing Team. She has been on several
podcasts discussing not only her
painting, but her intuitive readings
and intuitive artwork. Recently she
has taught creativity workshops,
emphasizing its health benefits.
When it comes to ideas for paintings,
Bertie needn’t look much further
than her own life’s adventures. At the
age of 56, Bertie is passionate about
living life utilizing the gifts she has
been given. She has wholeheartedly
returned to her timeless easel, intentionally bring-
ing her energies alive, in every painting. “My Dad
used to tell me that there aren’t really a whole lot
of new ideas, just different versions dusted off and
reframed. Some done well, others done exception-
ally well, with everything in between and at either
end of the spectrum.” She feels this has been a
recurring reminder to not over-think things, but
to keep pushing in the direction of her dreams. “I
can’t account for where the love of putting brush to
canvas came from, but I do know the grit and per-
severance developed through my adventures have
sculpted who I am, and have absolutely everything
to do with the inspiration for my paintings.”
Bertie’s artwork can be seen on her Website
elizabethvanderliet.com. You might have the
chance to bid on a painting she has donated to
MountainStar Family Relief Nursery’s upcoming golf
tournament and auction-Birdie’s 4 Babies to be held at
Broken Top Club, August 29. She is deeply inspired by
the work they are doing in and for the community.
“If you are ever in the vicinity, reach out and I will
share my little corner of magic with you! Or maybe
a cup of coffee!”

It has been such a pleasure getting to know Bertie.
We first met over a glass of kombucha and before we
knew it, an hour and a half went by and we had to
pick up our kids. I could have easily spent the whole
day getting to know her and hearing her lively
stories. She has such a beautiful, welcoming per-
sonality and inspires me to live my life with passion
and to its fullest. She is what makes the Tetherow
community so special.

MountainStar Family Relief Nursery
tetherow non-profit spotlight by Staley Micken | Development Director
MountainStar Family Relief Nursery
(MountainStar) believes that every child
deserves the best start possible. We are the only
program in Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crook
Counties providing therapeutic classrooms, par-
enting education services, and family support
targeted at protecting babies and toddlers who
are at significant risk for abuse and neglect.
This year marks the 20-year Anniversary
of MountainStar and celebrates our unique
early childhood and family support services in
Central Oregon. MountainStar started in April
2001 and served 34 babies and toddlers in their
first year. Now, MountainStar staff provide ser-
vices in Bend, Madras, Prineville, Redmond, and La Pine; serving
300 young children and their families annually.
The children we serve live in households with an average of 14
risk factors, including unstable housing, mental health issues,
a history of family violence, and exposure to toxic stress. Our
staff and volunteers create a safe and predictable environment to
respond to the individual circumstances and needs of each child
in our program.
It is hard to acknowledge child abuse, especially in our own com-
munity. In 2019, there were 872 victims of child abuse and neglect
in Central Oregon and 46% of those victims were under the age of
5. At MountainStar, we know that community support is critical in
our efforts to protect young children. Please consider supporting
our prevention services – donate, advocate, and volunteer!
Over the past 20 years, MountainStar staff and volunteers have
worked with 5,000 children ages 0–5 years old and connected
with over 20,000 parents and family members in our strength-
based prevention programs. Each year, MountainStar success-
fully keeps 98% of children in our program safe from confirmed
cases of abuse and neglect.
For more information about MountainStar, please visit mtstar.

ter for our upcoming event Birdies 4 Babies at mtstar.org/b4b.

Meet Tessy! A Parson Russell Terrier, living life
to the fullest in Tetherow for three years, with
her human family (Patricia, Bob, Allia, and Kaia).
After first laying eyes on her in New Mexico from
a breeder, the Ludeman family look back on their
seven years with Tessy affectionately. “Tessy has
been a game-changer for our family. We had never
owned a dog before, and it has been such a great
experience to be able to go on walks, hikes, and
mountain bike rides with her.
Similar to the Jack Russell Terrier, but with
noticeably longer legs and head, Tessy enjoys
hanging out at any of the Cascade Lakes or
anywhere that she can get a lot of attention. If
Tessy could talk for one day, Patricia would like
to know, “What are you barking at? Are you
really ALWAYS hungry and in need of a nap?”
Tessy loves to eat, especially her favorite treat,
Good’n Fun Triple Flavor Kabobs. One might say
that is the key to her sweet, little heart. “Tessy
barks at everything and everyone coming towards
our house, but not the UPS driver. We thought
this was odd until we realized he was bringing
her a small treat with every package (which was
frequent during the lockdown). She once ran to
his truck when he forgot to add the treat with the
package. Now, she sits by the front window for
hours and waits for the UPS driver to arrive.”
We always like to ask our Pet of the Month and
their owners how spoiled they think their pet is on
a scale of 1–10? Without hesitation, the Ludeman
family said 10 – very spoiled on the spoilometer.
“She’s incredibly loyal, a great companion, and very
friendly around people and kids. In a quest to keep
her entertained and comfortable she gets new toys,
blankets, and beds (many of which she never uses).”
Like all pets in the Tetherow community, we are
certain they are living their best life in Bend. We
are so glad Tessy gets all the new toys, blankets and
beds she deserves. And now a new collar thanks to
Megan of Dog Pack Collars! Tessy is glowing in her
new “sun shimmer” collar and is the sweetest, most
loving, Parson Russell Terrier there is around.

WE LOVE WHAT WE DO
and we love your pets too!
“I love that Patrick shows up with a cleaning crew
of 3 or 4 people. They can get thru my house in an hour.
They are always on time and can squeeze me in last
minute if necessary. They practice Covid mask wearing.
They bring their own supplies and use natural
cleaning products. They are always happy and asking
for feedback so they can improve their services.
I highly recommend them!!”

solar in the high desert by Janelle Lancaster | Owner of National Solar and Tetherow Resident
The Sunshine!
I n M o r e W a y s T h a n O n e
Tetherow residents, Justin and Janelle Lancaster started
National Solar during the recession in 2008. Beginning their
business in a challenging economic time, they wanted to provide
a more sustainable and hopeful perspective. Today, National
Solar has grown into a renewable industry lead with offices
throughout the Northwest. “We are proud allies with the Energy
Trust of Oregon, who administer and monitor the solar industry’s
benefits and utility relations as well as set strict standards for
quality solar practices.”
The High Desert offers many benefits for solar installation.
First and foremost are the 300 days of sunshine we benefit
from. This allows for optimal energy production throughout
the year. Another benefit to solar in Bend is the renewal of the
Federal Tax Credit or Investment Tax Credit that currently
stands at 26%. This is 26% of the price you pay for your entire
solar project! This credit can be applied towards the installed
liabilities of the year, as well as subsequent years if needed to
be broken up. However, the most important financial benefit
of solar is gained through net metering. “Net metering is when
any excess production is sent back to the grid via a bi-direc-
tional meter. The utility will credit your account and bank
these credits for you and will apply them against future bills.
Currently, Pacific Power offers its clients a very generous net
metering package that awards full retail compensation for any
excess production. As Tetherow homeowners, we have experi-
enced exceptional savings over the years with our system. Most
months, we don’t even have an electric bill!”
Tetherow homes are the perfect canvas for solar installation.
With optimal rooflines and minimal shading, countless homes are
an ideal model for solar. Even without ideal orientation or tilt, the
amount of sun makes adopting solar a great investment. When
investing in solar, one may be curious about the longevity of a sys-
tem. Solar modules last far beyond their 25-year warranty. With
no moving parts, failure with panels are rare. With inverters, most
companies, including National Solar, offer safer and more stable
micro inverters. “These inverters convert the power produced by
your panels to AC current up on the roof, as opposed to running
DC current through your home to a central inverter. With the use
of micro-inverters, systems can operate with more efficiency and
less whole system outages occur due to shading that may happen
throughout certain times of the daily cycle.”
Like our workmanship, the relationships we build with our cus-
tomers and community are made to last. Our customer-first focus
values communication, customization, and long-term support
with each and every client, ensuring that our work will remain a
perfect fit for years to come.

do it once. The other difference is that decisions on what to keep
in your life are made from your heart and your values, not from
your egoic mind. In this way, your mindset and how you perceive
your belongings changes.”
When asking Melissa what her vision is for Tidy + Flourish
and beyond, she thoughtfully replied, “My vision is that Tidy +
Flourish will be known for bringing more joy to the residents and
homes of Bend. By teaching the KonMari Method®, my hope is
that people will create an environment filled with items they love,
live in the present moment, and enjoy life with gratitude.”
Melissa is a long-time vipassana meditator and brings her undi-

the demands placed on busy professionals and families and how
to best support clients who are desiring to be more efficient in
their home maintenance and upkeep. “If you are not sure if you
should keep an item or not, tune into your body and notice how it
is responding. Our body reacts immediately with cues of tension
or relaxation and will provide you a clear answer as to whether
the item is adding value and joy to your life. If it does, keep it
with confidence. If not, let it go with gratitude.”

GETTINGTO THE ROOT
OF
ATTHE DENTIST’S OFFICE
Headaches happen to everyone; no one is immune. And while the
pain associated with them can range from mild to blinding, when
they occur frequently, they are a symptom of a disorder that can
wreak havoc on the sufferer’s quality of life.
Defined as occurring every or nearly every day, millions of
Americans suffer from headache disorders, creating a pandemic
of sorts much different than the one the world is experiencing
today. Whether a headache disorder or migraines, one thing is
for sure, both impact a person not only physically but financially,
socially, and emotionally, too.
The vast majority of people suffer-
ing from headache disorders are
managed with medications. And
while medications are relatively
effective at eliminating the pain
associated with a headache, they
don’t resolve the underlying cause.
And you may be surprised to learn
that some headache disorders stem
from the jaws and teeth.
That’s why some dentists, like those at Mill Point Dental, have
completed advanced post-graduate training to specialize in diag-
nosing and treating occlusions and the workings of the jaw.
Oral-Related Causes of Headaches
There are several oral-related causes for headaches. The most
common you’ve probably heard about is tooth grinding and
clenching, also known as bruxism. Other causes can include TMJ
disorders, sleep apnea, or if a tooth is out of alignment. A lesser
understood reason for headache disorders is a restricted envelope
of function. This happens when the jaw cannot move as freely as
it wants and is stuck in an unnatural position. This position causes
the muscles to continually fire in an attempt to find a place to rest.
Understanding the Restricted Envelope of Function
The way your teeth fit together, or occlusion, when eating or at
rest has a significant impact on your jaw. Imagine clenching your
fist all day long. Eventually, your hand and arm muscles will
fatigue, sending a signal to your brain that you need to relax. Now
imagine there is no way to relax because you literally cannot open
your palm. Other problems begin to present due to the constant
state of tension in your fist. Now take this example and move it to
the jaw and teeth. If the teeth aren’t correctly aligned and the jaw
cannot relax, headaches are frequent, painful, and debilitating.
But why aren’t the teeth appropriately aligned? The cause of mis-
alignment can vary. Some reasons include premature loss of baby
teeth, improper tongue posture, and diets primarily consisting
of soft foods. In addition, if there isn’t enough space between the
upper and lower teeth, the lower jaw can become restricted and
unable to move into a natural resting position.
In the past, premolars were removed in many adolescents before get-
ting braces to prevent overcrowding. But experts agree that remov-
ing these teeth retracts or pulls back the teeth, making a smaller
container for the tongue and increasing the
chances of snoring and sleep issues, and
TMJ disorders. So today, only around 5% of
people have their premolars removed.
Treating Oral-Related Headaches
Depending on the cause, treatment rec-
ommendations will vary. And finding the
cause isn’t always black and white. Patient
communication is critical for a dentist to
unlock clues that will lead to a formal diag-
nosis. For a dentist, the more clues they
have into things like the time of day the
headaches occur or wear patterns on the teeth, the better.
The first step experienced dentists may take when addressing head-
ache disorders is to prescribe a deprogrammer if the cause is uncer-
tain. This custom-made device looks like a retainer and is worn all
day – except when eating. The purpose of a deprogrammer is to
relax the jaw muscles. The deprogrammer works by removing tooth
contact points, thereby eliminating interferences caused by where
teeth touch (envelope of function) so the jaw can realign itself into a
natural position. The treatment takes a few weeks to work, but it is
an excellent diagnostic tool that specialists like Dr. Mike and Dr. Eric
use in the clinic to help patients uncover the mystery behind chronic
headaches. Once they know the true cause, they can make further
recommendations that may include orthodontia or comprehensive
restorative treatment to realign the envelope of function. Of course,
surgery may also be necessary, depending on the case.
At Mill Point Dental, we believe in solving problems so patients can
smile for life. While band-aids like medication and Botox can help
reduce headache pain, they don’t address the root cause of the prob-
lem. If you are experiencing chronic headaches and want to identify
and treat the underlying cause, schedule an appointment. By work-
ing with an experienced dentist you trust, the mysteries surrounding
your headaches can be solved, bringing you much-needed relief.

tetherow financial fitness by Joseph Mansfield
Asset allocation is to investment planning what the
foundation is to a house or the chassis is to a car.
It’s what everything else is built upon. And just as
important as constructing a house on a firm founda-
tion, having the right asset allocation can be vital to
helping you work toward your financial goals.
Although the name may sound intimidating, asset
allocation is just a technical term for a rather sim-
ple concept. Asset allocation is merely how your
portfolio is divided up among different types of
investments, such as stocks, bonds, and what are
called “cash alternatives.”

market volatility – you probably need to
adjust your asset allocation to suit your
risk tolerance.
Putting the pieces together
With those factors in hand, you can
begin to piece your asset alloca-
tion together. The primary building
blocks, at least to begin with, are
likely to include:
Stocks. Historically, stocks have
offered attractive returns, but along
with those returns, there have also
been periods of volatility. If you’re
young, you should have a long time
horizon – especially when it comes to
retirement. That may allow you to have
a larger allocation to stocks because
you have longer to ride out any short-
term market volatility that occurs.
Bonds. One reason investors like
bonds in a portfolio is because their
prices have historically been relatively
stable. By owning bonds, an inves-
tor’s aim may be to help manage his
or her portfolio’s overall value when
there’s volatility in the stock market.
The larger the proportion of bonds,
the more steady the portfolio’s overall
value should remain. Keep in mind,
however, that bonds’ returns have
been significantly less than stocks.
Cash alternatives. These are
relatively lower-risk, lower-return
investments. On the upside, they can be
easily be converted into cash when it’s
needed. On the downside, their returns
may not even keep up with inflation.
Of course, there are many other
investments to consider, such as real
estate investment trusts (REITs) and
commodities. Just remember that you
should intend for each type of invest-
ment you choose to play a particular
role, such as providing the potential

alternatives
for growth or income or stability, in
your overall allocation. Alternative
investments, such as those mentioned
above, also have their own unique
risks that you should fully understand
before investing.
Once you’ve decided on the types
of investments to include, you need
to determine how much of each is
appropriate. If you’re looking to grow
your investments’ value, you’ll likely
have a larger stock allocation and
a smaller one for bonds. The result
would be a portfolio with more poten-
tial volatility than one with a larger
proportion of bonds. You should ask
yourself if that’s a trade-off you’re
comfortable with.
Get help if you need it
Although asset allocation is a relatively
simple concept, you can see it has lots
of “moving parts.” That’s one reason
why many investors opt to work with
a professional Financial Advisor. If you
decide to seek help, look for an advisor
who will first get to know you and then
help create an investment plan that’s
built around (what else?) an appropri-
ate asset allocation.
Asset allocation cannot eliminate the
risk of fluctuating prices and uncer-
tain returns.

How asset allocation works
Using asset allocation to build a portfolio designed
to help you reach your long-term goals requires
taking three primary factors into consideration:
Goals. These are simply what you’re investing to
achieve. For many of us, a major goal is to enjoy a
financially secure retirement. If you have younger
children or grandchildren, helping them afford
higher education without building a mountain of
debt is likely another goal. Or maybe you’d also like
to make a luxury purchase – such as buying a vaca-
tion home or dream car or taking an exotic vacation
– down the road.
Time horizon. One reason why knowing your
goals is important is because it helps determine
your time horizon (how long you have until you
need to tap into your investments). If you’re 28, for
example, and want to retire at 68, your time hori-
zon is 40 years. Simple as that.
Risk tolerance. Your risk tolerance is the amount of
volatility in your portfolio’s value you’re comfortable
with. If you find you can’t sleep because you’re wor-
ried about your investments – especially when there’s

In recent months I have seen an influx of patients suffering from
insomnia. I personally have experienced sleepless nights followed
by zombie days as well as the long recovery back to sleeping
soundly. The following is a basic introduction to understanding
and treating insomnia while also providing another option of
healing through Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
In the last year and a half, our bodies have been under an
extreme amount of stress and change. This has caused many to
show symptoms of chronic stress. These include sleeplessness,
tension, change in mood, irritability, anxiety, heart palpitations,
etc. Chronic stress has negative effects on almost every part of
the body and contributes to serious health issues. This can be
expressed as; deeper body pains, longer and more frequent head-
aches, heart issues, gut health issues, constipation or diarrhea,
weight loss/weight gain, more pronounced emotions or behavior
changes, and insomnia.
From a modern medical approach, normal patterns of sleep and
wakefulness arecontrolled by the brain. Insomnia is the result of

a breakdown of this regulatory function. Sleep length and depth
vary between healthy individuals. The average total sleep is 7.5
hours. Sleep duration organization will also vary within indi-
viduals as a function of age. We sleep the most in youth and the
amount declines with age.
TCM consists of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, nutrition, cup-
ping, gua sha, and other techniques. TCM attributes insomnia to
several areas: overworking of the mind, fright, and deficiency of
the viscera (heart, spleen, liver, and kidneys). Another etiology
is a poor diet with irregular/uncontrolled eating and drinking.
Extreme emotional worry, excitement, and prolonged illness are
also causes of insomnia. TCM does not limit any potential cause
or treatment for insomnia. Each patient is treated as a unique
individual requiring tailored treatment plans and durations.
TCM categorizes insomnia into two basic patterns: excess or
deficiency. Symptoms of excess conditions can include restless
sleep with unpleasant dreams, falling asleep easily but can’t
stay asleep, nightmares, irritability, bitter taste in the mouth,

headache, dizziness, mental restlessness, thirst, palpitations,
and tongue ulcers. Additional symptoms of excess would be the
feeling of heaviness, oppression in the chest, nausea, no appetite,
discomfort in the epigastric area, and sour regurgitation.
When experiencing a deficiency pattern, one would show signs
of difficulty falling asleep, tiredness, poor appetite, mild anxiety,
blurred vision, poor memory, and pale face. Additional signs
are waking up frequently at night, dry throat, night sweats,
heat sensation in the palm of hands and soles of feet, dizziness,
mental restlessness, tinnitus, and headache. Insomnia from
deficiency could appear with signs including waking up early
and unable to fall back asleep again, easily startled, shy, timid,
lack of activity, palpitations, sore and dry eyes, blurred vision,
dry skin and hair, and sleepwalking.
A licensed acupuncturist will look at your individual signs and
symptoms and make a personal diagnosis and treatment plan for
you. That usually includes acupuncture, bodywork, and herbal
formulas. They may inquire about your sleeping habits and
lifestyle and make recommendations for change as well. You can
expect health issues like insomnia to take several weeks to sev-
eral months to obtain 80% success in the desired outcome.
I hope that this gives you a new perspective of care for resolving
any of your own sleeping issues. As always, please contact me to
discuss your personal situation.

Eaten Alive?!
by Rachael Blakely | Desert Sun Landscape
If you have ever been on a beautiful, scenic drive through the
forest or even a neighborhood and come upon a massive group of
trees that are mysteriously dead? You may have just witnessed
the carnage of the Bark Beetle.
In this article, we will talk about the effects of the Bark Beetle
(and other bark borers) and share some tips on how to eradicate
and deter those destructive bugs away from your precious trees.
Most of the information you read here can be found on the
“Solutions Pest and Lawn” Website.
The first step is to identify the beetle to see what type you are up
against. The Bark Beetle has the following traits:
• Typically dark red, black or brown in color, cylinder-shaped
and have hard bodies.
• They are very small, about the size of a rice grain. They have
forewings that are tough and act as sheaths for the softer
wings underneath which the beetles use during flight as well as
protecting their soft abdominal parts.
• They also have strong mouthparts which make it easy for them
to tear into wood.
Bark Beetle larvae are a pasty white color and look like small
grubs with a dark brown head.
• Inspect the tree for damage or live beetles.
• Look for holes in the trunks and branches. You may see “wish-
bone or J- shaped tunnels” and sawdust remnants which is
evidence of an infestation.

• If you feel like you have a beetle family setting up shop in your
tree(s), consult an Arborist company that has expertise in
treating beetle-infested trees.
Prevention:
Pruning the trees
It is best to cut off the branches and nearby mulches, grass, and
cut all the unwanted decayed leaves and branches as short and
trim as possible. It will make it unappealing and more difficult for
the Bark Beetles to infest a trimmed tree.
Insecticide Applications
One option is to consult one of the local nurseries on how to treat
your trees with systemic products seasonally to protect Birches,
Aspens, and other insect-sensitive trees. You may also consider
contacting a local Applicator and get on a yearly insecticide
application to have a better guarantee for your tree’s survival
against the Beetles.
We hope these tips can bring awareness to check out your trees!
When in doubt, contact a professional to help with the identifi-
cation and treatment of your
trees. The damage from the
Bark Beetle can be devastating
on a mature landscape.
Happy Beetle hunting!
