Each publication you will see is unique to your neighborhood,
and the publication will reflect who you are as a community. A
typical publication will include social event information specific
to the residents of Tetherow, upcoming meeting information,
activities and club information, business information, pictures,
personal stories, and articles (mostly written and photographed
by your neighbors), along with other information specifically
tailored to your neighborhood.
Along with the magazine, we will host exclusive events
to bring the community together. If you would like to be
included in special invitations to restaurant reviews, spa events,
and other local hiking & biking activities, please email me at
Lindsay.resendez@n2pub.com. We will communicate
events in the publication and you can rest assured we will not
share your personal data or emails. The events and publications
are designed to increase social connections between residents
and to develop a true sense of community.
Finally, I’d like to personally thank all of our business sponsors
who partnered with us, making the magazine free to all residents,
as well as the many residents who contributed to the first issue.
Just know that High Desert Living would not exist without you!
I look forward to meeting each of you in the near future!

My name is Lindsay Resendez. I am the owner and publisher
of High Desert Living. My team and I are pleased to bring you
the first High Desert Living magazine and hope you enjoy this
monthly publication.
My company, N2 Publishing, is the leading provider of specialty
publications for residents of exclusive communities across the
nation. Our objective is to turn neighborhoods into communities
with our monthly neighborhood magazines. Locally, we produce
magazines for Northwest Crossing Living and Broken Top Living.
This publication is a social newsletter, and it is designed to reflect
the social activities and interests of the residents of Tetherow.
We are not associated with your HOA; therefore we will not be
the “voice” of your HOA, property manager, or developer. If you
have questions regarding anything that involves the HOA, please
contact them directly. N2 Publishing will be responsible for the
layout of the magazine, as well as selling ad space to local busi-
nesses to cover the costs of printing and mailing.
High Desert Living is being provided free of charge to you as a
homeowner, as the cost of producing, printing, and mailing each
newsletter is covered by the wonderful advertising partners
that you see in each issue. We try our best to screen our adver-
tisers to ensure that they can provide the types of services that
you may need or want as a homeowner. If you currently utilize
a business that does excellent work, please let us know, as they
may want to reach out to your neighbors as well. Also, if you
own or run a business and would like information on reaching
your neighbors each month, please contact me for advertis-
ing information or to simply list your business for free in the

Living a Life Out of This World
Labor and Delivery. After moving to Oregon, she decided to continue
helping families with big decisions and is now a Real Estate Broker
with EXP Realty. She is passionate about helping people find their
dream home. The Bend community certainly provides great opportu-
nities for her to connect families with their desired lifestyles.
Currently, Jim continues traveling
the world at a much lower alti-
tude. He loves helping companies
that work in dangerous envi-
ronments be successful by using
thirty Techniques of Operating
Excellence, techniques that they
developed at NASA. He has described these principles-based
techniques in a book, Controlling Risk—In a Dangerous World.
Published in 2017, Capt. Jim Wetherbee, USN, Ret. has written
how to predict and prevent the next accident and improve perfor-
mance and productivity in hazardous operations, business, and
everyday life. “Organizations and people in day-to-day activities
can prevent all accidents and work with higher quality to achieve
more by embracing these techniques.”
Thank you, Jim and Robin, for sharing your incredible journey

We welcome you all to our first residential article
featuring an incredible resident, Jim Wetherbee,
sharing his tales from high above and down below.
Jim was raised in Huntington Station, NY, on
Long Island. Since the age of 10, the only thing he
wanted to do was fly in space. He studied aero-
space engineering at the University of Notre Dame,
graduating in 1974. Since he never wanted to have
a desk job, he joined the US Navy to learn to fly.
He spent two cruises in the Mediterranean Sea,
flying the A-7 Corsair from the aircraft carrier,
USS John F. Kennedy. He tested the F/A-18 as a
Naval Test Pilot and was accepted into the tenth
class of astronauts at NASA in 1984. During his 20
years at NASA, he was the Director of Flight Crew
Operations and flew six missions in space. Five of
those missions were as commander and is the only
American to have commanded five space missions.
Jim feels very fortunate he was able to do the only thing he’s ever
wanted to do and has two takeaways from his career with NASA.
First is to find your passion, whatever that may be and DO IT.
Second is to always listen to your wife. Jim’s wife, Robin, encour-
aged him every step of the way and to literally reach for the stars.
Robin and Jim have lived
in Tetherow for about
five years. Robin followed
Jim throughout the world
during his career, includ-
ing Houston, London, and
Anchorage. “Her job was
much harder than mine, as
she had to watch me launch
on six rockets. I always told
her she could choose where we live after we (semi) retired.”
Some requirements to where Robin wanted to live were having
four seasons, a place surrounded by water and snow sports and
view of the mountains. “She chose Bend and we love it here!”
Since they live on a golf course, Jim decided he should learn how
to play. “The mental challenge is very similar to the concentration
required to rendezvous and dock successfully with the International
Space Station, traveling at 17,500 mph, with the minor exception
that you won’t die if you hit the water on the 13th hole.”
While at NASA, Robin became a Registered Nurse, specializing in

Menopause: The time in a woman’s life when
her body changes (again), weight gain is near
impossible to stop, emotions swing like a Foucalt
Pendulum, and every night she wakes up soaked in
sweat even when the temperature is 70 degrees.
While the hormone changes are inevitable, there
are ways to combat or at least minimize the symp-
toms of menopause.
Nutrition
Not only do hormones cause weight gain during
menopause, but the simple fact is that our metabolism
slows down every year as we get older. Certain foods
may also exacerbate symptoms such as hot flashes,
night sweats, mood swings and, of course, weight gain.
The most common culprit is sugar. To help mitigate
symptoms during menopause, reducing the intake
of sugar is important. In addition to sugar, alcohol
(which gets metabolized as sugar), and starchy car-
bohydrates (again, gets metabolized as sugar) should
also be reduced. Even though women may feel the
need to drink alcohol to cope with the
mood swings, the body converts the
alcohol into sugar, exacerbating the
symptoms, thus a vicious cycle.
Another important thing to consider
as women start to go through meno-
pause is the loss of bone strength.
Foods and supplements containing
calcium and vitamin D are even more
important as estrogen levels drop
during menopause to prevent or
reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
To counteract the mood swings and
fatigue, women in menopause should
make sure their diets contain plenty
of B-6 and B-12 to help with serotonin
levels and overall energy levels.
Do:
· Eat plenty of plant-based foods
(fruits, veggies, nuts, legumes)
· Avoid excess sugars (starchy carbs,
sweets, alcohol)
· Eat lean meats
· Increase Vitamin D, Calcium and
B-Vitamin intake
Exercise
Another way to fight back against the
symptoms of menopause is through
consistent exercise. As mentioned
above, dropping estrogen levels cause
bone loss and strength training is a
great way to at least maintain or slow
the loss of strength and bone density.
Performing one to two days a week
of strength training is beneficial both
in building muscle mass, improving
metabolism and reducing the symp-
toms of menopause.
In addition to strength training, car-
diovascular or aerobic exercise is also
important for women going through
menopause. The combination of
resistance and cardiovascular training
will help minimize weight gain that
usually occurs during menopause as
well as hopefully stimulate weight
loss after menopause.
And, if anything, consistent exercise
during menopause helps with the
emotional ups and downs experienced
during this time.
While menopause can turn a woman
into a wild animal prone to a flaring
temper with an internal furnace burn-
ing inside her body at the same time
leaving her crying at a sappy commer-
cial and sleepless from night sweats,
the benefit of eating a balanced,
variety of food, lots of fruits and veg-
etables, minimizing sugar intake and
getting consistent exercise will help
women win the battle and tame the
beast known as menopause.

Resident
Chase, an 11-year-old Cockapoo, joined the
Vandenborn family of Natalie, Taylor and Jesse on
Thanksgiving 2010 as an early Christmas present.
He has definitely been a gift that keeps on giving!
Chase was born in Christmas Valley. Natalie
searched online and fell in love with him instantly,
bringing Chase home at six weeks. When they
brought him home he “chased” Jesse around the
yard. Jesse was 6 years old at the time and named
him Chase right then and there. Some of Chase’s
favorite things are the color blue and Ham as a treat.
The Vandenborn family and Chase have lived in
Tetherow for six years and Chase’s favorite place to
hang out in Bend is right on mom’s knee watching TV.
In fact, he nestled himself in the brand new leather
chair purchased from Bend Furniture and Design after

the only one who sits in it. On a scale of 1-10 of how spoiled Chase is,
they give him a 10. He is definitely loved and part of the family.
The Vandenborns like best that Chase is sweet, doesn’t shed and
gives the best cuddles ever. “He is so sweet, loving and always
brightens your day. Unconditional love!”
Chase has certainly shined as our first

boys attend Miller Elementary with
the oldest, Isaac, in fifth-grade. Isaac
is an avid basketball player but has
also recently picked up golf. Micah
is a second-grader and runs like the
wind, enjoying soccer. The youngest,
Noah, is in first- grade and loves to
work out with Sam (dad), play soccer
and has also picked up golf.

Sam and Sarah Rafail, their four
children, Lexi, 12, Isaac, 10, Micah,
8, Noah, 6, dog Bowie (named after
David Bowie) and two bunnies, Barley
and Basil, have happily been residents
of the Tetherow community since
October 2020. They decided on the
North 40 because of the unobstructed
views of the mountains, proximity to
the schools/trails and central location
for getting around in NW Bend.
Sam was born in Iran and moved to
LA when he was 3. Sarah grew up in
Vancouver, Washington, and moved
to Southern California in 2000
where she met Sam. They started
their family in Orange County
(Laguna Beach and Newport Beach)
before moving to Bend in 2017.
“We joined some friends for a road
trip to Bend in the summer of 2016
and fell in love with Bend. We knew
this would be a great place for the
kids to grow up and appreciated
everything Bend had to offer, so
we decided to leave the beaches of

that don’t quite appreciate it yet.
However, some family traditions
that are appreciated are New
Year’s Eve “minute to win it” games
and the annual Christmas Eve drive
around to look at lights. They enjoy
community involvement where Sam
volunteers as a basketball coach for the
Parks and Rec and plans to help with COBA
and other basketball programs in the area. Sarah owns her own
Birth Doula business and is actively involved in educating and
supporting expecting parents. Sarah also spends a lot of time vol-
unteering at Miller Elementary. The kids are animal lovers and
volunteer at animal sanctuaries around Bend as well.
Looking forward to this summer and being from Newport Beach,
their vacations are planned around anywhere that has great
beaches. They are also hoping to travel to Brazil later this year.
The Rafails love Tetherow and are so happy more families are
sharing the love stating, “It’s great to see all the families with
kids moving into our neighborhood and our street.”
Thank you, Rafail family, for being a part of our first issue of High
Desert Living. We feel fortunate to have you as our first family and
look forward to watching you all grow and enjoy life in Tetherow.
Favorite family activities include
standup paddle-boarding, disc golf,
family hikes, mountain biking, float-
ing the river, riding bikes around to
nearby parks like Discovery Park
and enjoying the Tetherow pool. “We
designed our house with entertaining
in mind and love having our friends
and neighbors over (once that’s a
thing again).” In the family, there
are two meat eaters, two picky kids
and two vegetarians which make
for interesting times at dinner. “We
typically eat together at home most
nights and are looking forward to
summer BBQs.” When they don’t
eat at home their favorite local
restaurant spots are El Sancho for
tacos, family takeout at The Row and
Active Cultures, and Currents at the
Riverhouse for date nights.
You will often find the Rafail family
enjoying their pool/hot tub, working
out and chilling at home. They are
die-hard Lakers fans and root for the

QUALITY & INTEGRITY IS THEIR
PRIORITY IN EVERY PROJECT
By Aaron Ribble, Owner of Buffalo Ridge Builders
The story and creation of Buffalo Ridge Builders
began in 2018. Aaron Ribble, operator and owner,
is a native of Bend, Oregon. Growing up in Bend,
Aaron has experienced the growth and under-
stands what materials to use in Central Oregon’s
ever-changing climate. He has over 20 years of
experience in the building industry and has worked
for numerous companies, watching and learning
about all facets required to bid a job to completion.
He believes in holding integrity as a priority on
ALL jobs Buffalo Ridge Builders takes on. Aaron
was growing more and more frustrated working for
companies that weren’t delivering quality prod-
ucts but charged top dollar for their work. Thus,
he decided to start his own business and Buffalo
Ridge Builders was born. He believes in meeting the
clients’ needs with care and attention by providing
great service and quality details.
“At Buffalo Ridge Builders we constantly raise the
bar, think big, anticipate client’s needs and never
stop learning. We earn our reputation, one project
at a time, by delivering what we promise – each
detail, every project, every time. We take respon-
sibility for our work and value our ability to honor
our commitments.”
Buffalo Ridge Builders has a total of five employ-
ees and is ever-growing. Aaron’s vision for Buffalo
Ridge Builders is to be recognized as a top builder/
remodeler with great customer service, finishing
each project with a more-than-satisfied home-
owner, knowing each project was thoroughly
thought through for the client with integrity and
the utmost attention to detail no matter the project.
“We take the time to consult with each and every
client to make sure the project is everything they need
and want. We go above and beyond when doing our
research for clients, giving them information to help
them achieve all they are looking for with their project. No project
is ever too complicated or small. We can do it all and make sure it’s
done with the focus on making it happen for the client in a timely
manner with quality materials and craftsmanship.”
Buffalo Ridge Builder’s advice to homeowners:
When choosing a general contractor you’ve got to do your
research. A general contractor has the ability to take your home
that you’ve worked tirelessly for and turn it into the place you
come home to at the end of a long day to relax and
unwind- or turn that same home into another added
stress. Be very selective in whom you choose.
Your next project is a call away!

be. This gives your friends and neighbors the chance to feel your
experience and see if it would be a good fit for their own vacation!
Pictures can be included, as well.

Pictures – We love pictures! Parties, graduations, family events,
kids playing, holiday gatherings and more! One of the best parts
about your new newsletter is the involvement of residents. Pictures
are an easy way to connect with your neighbors and bring them joy.
Digital photographs with high-quality capability are the way to go
here — the more pixels, the better! Simply send an attachment of
the pictures in an email to Lindsay.resendez@n2pub.com.
Family Spotlight – This is where we get to spotlight one of the
neighborhood families each month. Have you always wished you
knew your neighbors better? Well, here is a great way to get to
know them. Each family is able to tell us whatever they would
like, but some popular questions to answer include: How long
have you lived in the neighborhood? Where is your hometown?
What’s your education? What are your hobbies and interests?
What is your career?
Around Tetherow – Let us know what’s going on! Whether you
are playing in a golf tournament, swimming competitively, celebrat-
ing a milestone birthday or anniversary, enjoying the holidays, or
simply getting together with neighbors, we want to hear about it.
Young Achievers – This for the ages 0-17 and a great way to
showcase your kiddo doing what they love, of course, with a
smile! Let us congratulate them for a big achievement from the
first hole-in-one, volunteer work, music, theater, graduating
and getting a first job in these crazy times or just simply wish-
ing them a happy birthday.
