The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) is in solidarity with and accepts the political authority of
the International Committee of the Fourth International, the World Party of Socialist
Revolution founded by Leon Trotsky in 1938. The Fourth International, with which the SEP is
aligned, emerged out of the implacable struggle waged by Marxist internationalists, led by
Leon Trotsky, against the bureaucratic degeneration of the Soviet Union and the betrayal of
the program of world socialist revolution by the dictatorial regime headed by Stalin and his
henchmen. These objectives can be realized only within the framework of an international
strategy, the goal of which is the global unification of the workers of all countries and the
creation of a United Socialist States of the World.

Kanata’s/Canada's coat of arms should include an aboriginal symbol for it to truly represent the
country's history, Winnipeg Centre MP Pat Martin says.
The current national emblem has symbols representing England, Scotland, Ireland and France,
but nothing to reflect the first residents of the country, Martin told CBC News Friday before
introducing a motion asking Parliament to consider the idea.
"It looks more like the coat of arms for Narnia than for Canada," he said.
"What really struck me, especially after the apology of residential schools last week, is that
there's no reference, whatsoever, to the original peoples of Canada — the First Nations, Inuit or
the Métis."
Even the addition of an eagle feather or a medicine wheel would help the coat of arms be more
representative, he said.
A vote in Parliament is not required to change the coat of arms — the government could simply
decide it is a good idea and do it, he said.
Aboriginal people could be consulted about it over the summer, he said.
The coat of arms was last revised in 1994

Orthodox Trotskyism can bring Aratinga carolinensis or something similar.
Carolina Conure Project | Pleistocene Rewilding (boards.net)
May 8, 2018 at 12:08pm
Quote
The Carolina parakeet, or Carolina conure (Conuropsis carolinensis), was a small parrot
native to the eastern and plains states of the USA, and possibly to southern Ontario,
Canada. It was a very colourful bird that had adapted to much cooler, more temperate
habitats than most living parakeets occupy. In fact, the only living parakeet which lives in
comparable climates is the monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) of southern South
America. For a time, it was thought that the two species may be closely related, due to the
presence in both of a fully feathered ceres (the fleshy part at the top of the beak, near the
forehead). However, genetic testing has shown them to be more distant than previously
thought, having acquired this trait separately through convergent evolution. Instead, the
closest relatives of Conuropsis are members of the recently-revised genus Aratinga, which
includes the nanday (A. nenday), jenday (A. jandaya), sun (A. solstitialis), sulphur-breasted
(A. maculata), gold-capped (A. auricappilus), and dusky conures (A. weddellii).
Gene-splicing from the Carolina conure would require having the complete genome, which I
am not sure if we have fully sequenced yet, except for mitochondrial DNA used for
phylogenetic studies. If this was done, one could simply compare the genome with that of a
living conure, note any areas of difference, and change the conure template. This would
defeat the purpose of an effigy breed though, which was to make a bird on which only
minimal splices would be necessary, minimizing cost and rejection. If we don’t have enough
material from Conuropsis, then we could potentially isolate the genes responsible for those
traits in the monk parakeet, and splice them into an embryo of the effigy breed, with the
understanding that the mechanisms creating these traits in monk parakeets may be
different than the mechanisms which did so in Carolina parakeets. Ultimately we have to
understand that the animal we are creating is not really a Carolina parakeet, but an
ecological and aesthetic replacement meant to inhabit the same areas. This will not be
Conuropsis carolinensis, but might instead be dubbed Aratinga carolinensis, or something
similar.

American lion - Wikipedia
We have to put African lions and Asiatic lions in Canada serve as a proxy for American lions.
Rewilding Canada Blog: Arctic Lions: Yes, really (rewildcanada.blogspot.com)

Arctic Lions: Yes, really
Wild lions (Panthera leo) are today almost entirely restricted to Africa, the
exception being the small population of Asian lions (Panthera leo persica) in Gir
National Park in India. This was not always the case however, lions were in fact once
found in every continent but Australia and South America. There were many lions in
North America, including Canada. The American lion (Panthera leo atrox) was found in
both arctic/taiga environments and plains/steppe environments.
There is a lot known from fossils and DNA evidence about American lions. For
example, it is known that they were significantly larger than modern African and Asian
lions. This was presumably an adaptation to hunt larger North American herbivores
such as bison and camels. From genetic evidence we know that it was more closely
related to Asian and cave lions (Panthera leo spelaea) than to African lions, and so
probably shared some characteristics with them. Asian lions have short manes
compared to African lions, and cave paintings of cave lions seem to imply they did as
well. From this it is supposed that American lions also had short manes. It is also
presumed that like all modern lions, they had a pride structure with females being the
hunters and males defending the pride from other males and dangerous creatures such
as elephants and buffalo. It is not known exactly how their fur grew but presumably it
must have been thick enough for them to withstand cold winters.
Modern lions are not typically found in colder environments, but many captive
ones are and have shown a surprising ability to withstand low temperatures. Many grow
thick manes and pelts in response, with lions regularly being kept outside in the winter
in places as cold as Scotland, Canada, and even Siberia. This adaptability is probably
what allowed lions to have such a large range in the first place. It is thought that many
of North America's large carnivores went extinct when many of the large herbivores
were extirminated by human hunters. In the lion's case, this was the horses, the camels,
and the bison. When the horses and camels were gone, and the bison few in number,
the lions starved. Without the lions present the remaining bison could grow to the huge
population size seen in history.
If the lion's prey could be brought back to Canada, then supposedly the lion could
be as well. The Pleistocene lions are considered subspecies of the lions still present
today, so the differences are minimal. Substituting the American lion with lions from the
old world should nicely fill the ecological role left behind by the American lion. The
Asiatic lion from India might be the best choice due to it's closer relationship to the
extinct lions, but really any lion subspecies would be acceptable, and African lions
would certainly be more readily available. Lions could help to control native deer and
bison populations as well as the numbers of species to be introduced later.

Clouded leopard - Wikipedia
The clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is a wild cat inhabiting dense forests from the foothills of
the Himalayas through mainland Southeast Asia into South China. The first clouded leopard known
to science was brought to London from China in the early 19th century and described in 1821. It has
large dusky-grey blotches and irregular spots and stripes reminiscent of clouds. Its head-and-body
length ranges from 68.6 to 108 cm (27.0 to 42.5 in) with a 61 to 91 cm (24 to 36 in) long tail. It uses
its tail for balancing when moving in trees and is able to climb down vertical tree trunks head first. It
rests in trees during the day and hunts by night on the forest floor.
The clouded leopard is the first cat that genetically diverged 9.32 to 4.47 million years ago from the
common ancestor of the pantherine cats. Several million years ago, it reached Sundaland, where it
diverged 2.0–0.93 million years ago to a different species, the Sunda clouded leopard (N. diardi).
Today, the clouded leopard is locally extinct in Singapore, Taiwan, and possibly Hainan Island and
Vietnam. Its total population is suspected to be fewer than 10,000 mature individuals, with a
decreasing population trend, and no single population numbering more than 1,000 adults. It is
therefore listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 2008. The population is threatened by
large–scale deforestation and commercial poaching for the wildlife trade. Its body parts are offered
for decoration and clothing, though it is legally protected in most range countries.
The clouded leopard has been kept in zoological gardens since the early 20th century. Captive
breeding programs were initiated in the 1980s. In captivity, the clouded leopard has an average
lifespan of 11 years.

Clouded Leopards: Modern Semi-Sabertooth
Cats

When I read Brian Switek’s excellent longform piece “Once and future cats” — about the history of
the sabertooth cats — one passage jumped out at me:
While the future course of evolution is unknowable, there is a possibility that we are only in a short
lull between sabercats. Long killing fangs have evolved so many times in the past 20 million years
that there’s every reason to believe that a newly derived sabercat might evolve again. In fact, Per
Christiansen, a zoologist at the University of Aalborg in Denmark, argued in 2012 that the clouded
leopard — a mid-sized cat that prowls the tropical forests of Indonesia — has relatively elongated
teeth and shows a great deal of similarity to true sabercats. Given a few million years, might the
saber-toothed descendants of today’s clouded leopards slash at the throats of mid-sized herbivores
of the future?
Smilodon is a genus of the extinct machairodont subfamily of the felids. It is one of the most famous
prehistoric mammals and the best known saber-toothed cat. Although commonly known as the
saber-toothed tiger, it was not closely related to the tiger or other modern cats. Smilodon lived in
the Americas during the Pleistocene epoch (2.5 mya – 10,000 years ago). The genus was named in
1842 based on fossils from Brazil; the generic name means "scalpel" or "two-edged knife" combined
with "tooth". Three species are recognized today: S. gracilis, S. fatalis, and S. populator. The two
latter species were probably descended from S. gracilis, which itself probably evolved from
Megantereon. The hundreds of individuals obtained from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles
constitute the largest collection of Smilodon fossils.
Overall, Smilodon was more robustly built than any extant cat, with particularly well-developed
forelimbs and exceptionally long upper canine teeth. Its jaw had a bigger gape than that of modern
cats, and its upper canines were slender and fragile, being adapted for precision killing. S. gracilis
was the smallest species at 55 to 100 kg (120 to 220 lb) in weight. S. fatalis had a weight of 160 to
280 kg (350 to 620 lb) and height of 100 cm (39 in). Both of these species are mainly known from
North America, but remains from South America have also been attributed to them. S. populator
from South America was the largest species, at 220 to 436 kg (485 to 961 lb) in weight and 120 cm
(47 in) in height, and was among the largest known felids. The coat pattern of Smilodon is unknown,

In North America, Smilodon hunted large herbivores such as bison and camels, and it remained
successful even when encountering new prey species in South America. Smilodon is thought to
have killed its prey by holding it still with its forelimbs and biting it, but it is unclear in what manner
the bite itself was delivered. Scientists debate whether Smilodon had a social or a solitary lifestyle;
analysis of modern predator behavior as well as of Smilodon's fossil remains could be construed to
lend support to either view. Smilodon probably lived in closed habitats such as forests and bush,
which would have provided cover for ambushing prey. Smilodon died out at the same time that most
North and South American megafauna disappeared, about 10,000 years ago. Its reliance on large
animals has been proposed as the cause of its extinction, along with climate change and competition
with other species, but the exact cause is unknown.

Finally, Tremarctos floridanus, the northern spectacled bear. Tremarctos stems from an older line of
bears than Ursus, and is today represented by only one species, Tremarctos ornatus, the Andean
spectacled bear. Now, the Andean bear is, as far as we can tell, a very similar species to the northern
one, apart from being a bit smaller. They both would have been more herbivorous than other bears,
eating mostly bark, cacti, fruit, nuts, and leaves. The Andean bear today lives at high elevations, and
so is very capable of thriving in colder temperatures. It coexisted with the black bear for hundreds of
thousands of years, so competition shouldn’t be a significant issue, as they seem to have a different
niche. A northern population could be a good insurance plan for this vulnerable species, and it would
add another herbivore to an ecosystem overrun with plants.

Great Lakes gray wolf (biologicaldiversity.org)
Jonathan G. Way wrote that the Great Lakes wolf are the best type of wolf to put in eastern Turtle
Island/North America.
http://www.easterncoyoteresearch.com/downloads/Coywolf.pdf
Scientists, wildlife managers, and laypeople should now appropriately classify the five wild canid
groups found in North America belonging to the genus Canis as: (1) western coyote; (2) eastern
coyote or coywolf (east of longitude 80° which includes New England, New York, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, Ontario, and Quebec); (3) eastern and red wolf (C. lycaon, including C. rufus; drawn
separately on the diagram); (4) Great Lakes wolf, which is a hybrid between eastern wolves and gray
wolves (C. lupus × C. lycaon or C. lycaon × C. lupus); and (5) gray wolf. Three possible additional
genetic and morphological groupings consist of the Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi), the mid-
Atlantic coyote, and the southeastern coyote. Wolves in the Southwest are possibly the remnant of
an early expansion of the gray wolf into North America, while research in the mid-Atlantic (Virginia)
area indicates that coyotes there are a product of hybridization between northeastern
coyotes/coywolves from the north and western coyotes from the west; hence they are an
intermediate form between eastern coyotes and western coyotes. Mid-Atlantic and southeastern
coyotes also have domestic dog genetic influence, and the southeastern coyote may also have red
wolf and/or gray wolf influence as well but, overall, is more western coyote-like compared to their
northeastern cousins. With this ‘Canis soup’ of different but closely related species (there is gene
flow from lupus to lycaon and lycaon to latrans), distinct species status for any canid complicates
conservation efforts, especially in eastern North America. Recent investigations acknowledge the
importance of hybridization among closely related species and in the case of eastern wolves, there
is a need for managed introgression that focusses on preserving any eastern wolf genetic material
in any genome regardless of their potential mosaic ancestry composition. If such an effort prioritizes
and maintains individuals that carry admixed genomes, as has been suggested, then more common
animals like the eastern coyote would be an important source of greater genetic variation and
potential adaptive capacity for rare canines.
Interestingly, one of the biggest questions remaining for biologists to answer, is which wolf should
be allowed to return to the region? And it’s not as if that decision can even be conclusively
determined by scientists. We originally thought the larger gray wolf (called timber wolf in this region)
inhabited the Northeast, but research over the past two decades by Paul Wilson and Brad White’s
team at Trent University indicates that it was the eastern wolf that used to live there, with a strong
likelihood that gray-eastern wolf hybrids, similar to the ‘Great Lakes wolves’ of Minnesota,
Wisconsin, and Michigan, also resided in much of the Northeast. It could be argued that gray wolves,
or their hybrids, may be a more appropriate source for an active wolf restoration, as they would
probably not mate with eastern coyotes due to size differences and the fact that they are more
distantly related to both coyotes and eastern wolves. You see, eastern wolves and coyotes evolved
in North America, whereas gray wolves in the Old World. The gray wolf may be more of an
ecologically effective predator of moose, which in recent years have been increasing in range in the
Northeast. However, it may be difficult to find a source of suitable gray wolves in the East as the
neighboring wolves in central Ontario and eastern Quebec are eastern wolves or eastern-gray wolf
hybrids.
Given all of these influences, the final chapter of canid recovery in the Northeast has yet to be
written. In fact, the USFWS and the Northeastern states have chosen to do nothing, which is illegal
given the mandates to recover wolves in the area. My opinion, given all of the evidence, is that the
Great Lakes wolf type would be the ideal wolf for this region. It is bigger and certainly more wolf-like
than eastern coyotes and has a low likelihood of hybridizing with them. It is also found within
dispersing distance of the Northeast and would likely survive well there, similar to the ~4,000
currently residing in wild in the U.S. Great Lakes states.

Mammut (family Mammutidae) that inhabited North and Central America during the late Miocene or
late Pliocene up to their extinction at the end of the Pleistocene 10,000 to 11,000 years ago.[1]
Mastodons lived in herds and were predominantly forest-dwelling animals. They survived on a mixed
diet and obtained food by browsing and grazing, somewhat similar to their distant relatives, modern
elephants, but probably with greater emphasis on browsing
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_forest_elephant
The African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is one of the two living African elephant species. It
is native to humid forests in West Africa and the Congo Basin. It is the smallest of the three living
elephant species, reaching a shoulder height of 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in). Both sexes have straight, down-
pointing tusks, which erupt when they are 1–3 years old. It lives in family groups of up to 20
individuals. Since it forages on leaves, seeds, fruit, and tree bark, it has been referred to as the
'megagardener of the forest'. It contributes significantly to maintain the composition and structure
of the Guinean Forests of West Africa and the Congolese rainforests.

Rewilding Canada Blog: Lost Giants: Large Canadian Mammals That We Cannot

Sloths
There was one giant ground sloth species present across Canada, from the
plains to the arctic. This was Jefferson's ground sloth (Megalonyx jefersoni), which
stood about three metres tall and weighed a thousand kilograms. Like elephants,
ground sloths were major environmental engineers, tearing down trees and browsing
leaves. The closest living relatives of the ground sloths are the tree sloths, which are
very small and in no way the ecological equivalent of their giant cousins. The Americans
have discussed all sorts of animals as proxies for their ground sloth species, including
rhinoceroses, anteaters, and giraffes, none of which are practical or even viable here,
due to climatic restraints. It is hoped that the takins being considered as woodox proxies
will also fill some of the role of the ground sloth, due to their ability to rear up on their
hind legs in order to reach leaves. It is not a perfect solution, but such things are rare.
Also, we should put the Sichuan takin/Tibetan takin in eastern Turtle Island/North America

Megafauna in the Forests of the Northeast
Bootherium bombifrons, the woodox, was a more southern relative of the living muskox
(Ovibos moschatus). The muskox tribe is closely related to sheep and goats, and it is
from this group that I will select a replacement. The living muskox is too highly adapted
to colder climates to be used farther south, and its diet includes more grazing, and less
browsing, than the woodox’s did. Based on diet, climatic suitability, and size, the best
possible replacement would the takin (Budorcas taxicolor). The takin is of a similar
weight to the woodox, and has a similar diet of tree leaves and shrubs. For a long time,
it was thought that the takin was much more closely related to muskoxen than others of
the sheep tribe, due to morphological similarities. Genetic evidence has since placed
them farther apart, but it still possesses many useful traits to make it a solid proxy. The
Sichuan subspecies (Budorcas taxicolor tibetana) is probably the most available
subspecies, and they have proven able to adapt to our vegetation and climate, as there
is a breeding herd of at least 30 animals in the Wilds Safari Park in Ohio. Animals could
be sourced from this and other captive populations to create new wild populations in
eastern North America. Takins would help to control tree and shrub species through
their extensive browsing. Like other large herbivores, they would create dung and
patches of hair for the use of other animals.

legged Equus francisci, and the still extant Equus caballus, today represented by wild and
domestic horses. Equus caballus complicates was of the latter species, and so would have
been very similar to a modern horse. There are only two living subspecies of the caballine
horse; the takhi (Equus caballus przewalski) or eastern wild horse, and the domestic horse
(Equus caballus caballus) which is descended from the western wild horse (Equus caballus
ferus). The takhi is the only truly wild, as opposed to feral, horse in existence, making it the
best choice from a behavioural and conservation standpoint. However, it is predominantly
adapted to steppe habitats, and may not be as well suited to the wet, forested conditions
found here as maybe some of its domestic relatives would be. It has been shown however,
from various breeding populations in Europe and North America, that takhis can be very
adaptable to similar conditions. With this knowledge, I would recommend that they be
used. There are many captive animals on the continent, from which to start a new
population. Horses are useful for creating mosaic pastures, which are allow a greater
diversity of animals to utilize a smaller area of habitat.

Canada was also home to a creature known as the giant beaver (Castoroides

behaviour, such as whether or not it built damns, and so finding an ecological proxy for
it is made doubly difficult.

European Hare Native to Europe, the European Hare (Lepus europaeus) – sometimes incorrectly
called a jackrabbit – was introduced into Ontario in 1912, when nine animals were released near
Brantford. It adapted well, and spread throughout southern Ontario as far east as Gananoque by
the 1950s and north to Ottawa by 1961. Never common in the Toronto area, it has fared poorly in
recent years as coyotes have expanded and habitat has severely diminished. It is unlikely it will
ever again be a common sight in Toronto.

They are actually colobines, foregut fermenters, and folivorous. They can handle Russian and the
Appalachian temps. And would probably increase the undergrowth as well by eating mature leaves,
leading to more megafauna.

No it does not, but it's a telling story of what happens when you try to bring megafauna from one
continent to another that it previously did not exist in. Earlier today I saw someone on the sub talking
about bringing golden snub nosed monkeys to North America just because "we've lost most of our
tree browsers", so I just wanted to show what happens when you shuffle megafauna around.

Glyptotherium - Wikipedia
While rhinoceroses have not been native for a very long time, it is possible that they
might be introduced as substitutes for other large, thick-skinned animals. An idea I'm
entertaining right now is using the indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) as a potential proxy
for the North American glyptodont, Glyptotherium. They are of similar weights and diet.
Anyway, I hope to expand on these ideas later but I want to get some preliminary
opinions on what people think.

I’d relieve the Barn owl of it’s terrible name and call it the Spectral Owl. It’s so otherworldly

That's a rather ridiculous idea. You want to replace a carnivorous bird that never
occurred in Canada and went extinct before the Late Quaternary with an unrelated
herbivorous bird?

We could also put the red-legged seriema and the black-legged seriema in Canada as
proxies for the terror bird.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seriema#:~:text=There%20are%20two%20species%20of,
%2C%20and%20mean%20%22crested%22.
The seriemas are the sole living members of the small bird family Cariamidae, which is
also the only surviving lineage of the order Cariamiformes. Once believed to be related
to cranes, they have been placed near the falcons, parrots and passerines, as well as
the extinct Phorusrhacidae.[1][2] The seriemas are large, long-legged territorial birds
that range from 70–90 cm (28–35 in) in length. They live in grasslands, savanna, dry
woodland and open forests of Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. There
are two species of seriemas, the red-legged seriema (Cariama cristata) and the black-
legged seriema (Chunga burmeisteri).[3] Names for these birds in the Tupian languages
are variously spelled as siriema, sariama, and çariama, and mean "crested".[4]

The red-legged seriema and the black-legged seriema should also be in Canada
because so they can serve as proxies for Bathornithidae.

The current national emblem has symbols representing England, Scotland, Ireland and France, but nothing to reflect the first residents of the country, Martin told CBC News Friday before introducing a motion asking Parliament to consider the idea. "It looks more like the coat of arms for Narnia than for Canada," he said. "What really struck me, especially after the apology of residential schools last week, is that there's no reference, whatsoever, to the original peoples of Canada — the First Nations, Inuit or the Métis."

  • 25. The Carolina parakeet, or Carolina conure (Conuropsis carolinensis), was a small parrot native to the eastern and plains states of the USA, and possibly to southern Ontario, Canada. It was a very colourful bird that had adapted to much cooler, more temperate habitats than most living parakeets occupy. In fact, the only living parakeet which lives in comparable climates is the monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) of southern South America. For a time, it was thought that the two species may be closely related, due to the presence in both of a fully feathered ceres (the fleshy part at the top of the beak, near the forehead). However, genetic testing has shown them to be more distant than previously thought, having acquired this trait separately through convergent evolution. Instead, the closest relatives of Conuropsis are members of the recently-revised genus Aratinga, which includes the nanday (A. nenday), jenday (A. jandaya), sun (A. solstitialis), sulphur-breasted (A. maculata), gold-capped (A. auricappilus), and dusky conures (A. weddellii). Gene-splicing from the Carolina conure would require having the complete genome, which I am not sure if we have fully sequenced yet, except for mitochondrial DNA used for phylogenetic studies. If this was done, one could simply compare the genome with that of a living conure, note any areas of difference, and change the conure template. This would defeat the purpose of an effigy breed though, which was to make a bird on which only minimal splices would be necessary, minimizing cost and rejection. If we don’t have enough material from Conuropsis, then we could potentially isolate the genes responsible for those traits in the monk parakeet, and splice them into an embryo of the effigy breed, with the understanding that the mechanisms creating these traits in monk parakeets may be different than the mechanisms which did so in Carolina parakeets. Ultimately we have to understand that the animal we are creating is not really a Carolina parakeet, but an ecological and aesthetic replacement meant to inhabit the same areas. This will not be Conuropsis carolinensis, but might instead be dubbed Aratinga carolinensis, or something similar.

  • 27. Wild lions (Panthera leo) are today almost entirely restricted to Africa, the exception being the small population of Asian lions (Panthera leo persica) in Gir National Park in India. This was not always the case however, lions were in fact once found in every continent but Australia and South America. There were many lions in North America, including Canada. The American lion (Panthera leo atrox) was found in both arctic/taiga environments and plains/steppe environments. There is a lot known from fossils and DNA evidence about American lions. For example, it is known that they were significantly larger than modern African and Asian lions. This was presumably an adaptation to hunt larger North American herbivores such as bison and camels. From genetic evidence we know that it was more closely related to Asian and cave lions (Panthera leo spelaea) than to African lions, and so probably shared some characteristics with them. Asian lions have short manes compared to African lions, and cave paintings of cave lions seem to imply they did as well. From this it is supposed that American lions also had short manes. It is also presumed that like all modern lions, they had a pride structure with females being the hunters and males defending the pride from other males and dangerous creatures such as elephants and buffalo. It is not known exactly how their fur grew but presumably it must have been thick enough for them to withstand cold winters. Modern lions are not typically found in colder environments, but many captive ones are and have shown a surprising ability to withstand low temperatures. Many grow thick manes and pelts in response, with lions regularly being kept outside in the winter in places as cold as Scotland, Canada, and even Siberia. This adaptability is probably what allowed lions to have such a large range in the first place. It is thought that many of North America's large carnivores went extinct when many of the large herbivores were extirminated by human hunters. In the lion's case, this was the horses, the camels, and the bison. When the horses and camels were gone, and the bison few in number, the lions starved. Without the lions present the remaining bison could grow to the huge population size seen in history.
  • 28. If the lion's prey could be brought back to Canada, then supposedly the lion could be as well. The Pleistocene lions are considered subspecies of the lions still present today, so the differences are minimal. Substituting the American lion with lions from the old world should nicely fill the ecological role left behind by the American lion. The Asiatic lion from India might be the best choice due to it's closer relationship to the extinct lions, but really any lion subspecies would be acceptable, and African lions would certainly be more readily available. Lions could help to control native deer and bison populations as well as the numbers of species to be introduced later. Clouded leopard - Wikipedia The clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is a wild cat inhabiting dense forests from the foothills of the Himalayas through mainland Southeast Asia into South China. The first clouded leopard known to science was brought to London from China in the early 19th century and described in 1821. It has large dusky-grey blotches and irregular spots and stripes reminiscent of clouds. Its head-and-body length ranges from 68.6 to 108 cm (27.0 to 42.5 in) with a 61 to 91 cm (24 to 36 in) long tail. It uses its tail for balancing when moving in trees and is able to climb down vertical tree trunks head first. It rests in trees during the day and hunts by night on the forest floor. The clouded leopard is the first cat that genetically diverged 9.32 to 4.47 million years ago from the common ancestor of the pantherine cats. Several million years ago, it reached Sundaland, where it diverged 2.0–0.93 million years ago to a different species, the Sunda clouded leopard (N. diardi).
  • 32. Today, the clouded leopard is locally extinct in Singapore, Taiwan, and possibly Hainan Island and Vietnam. Its total population is suspected to be fewer than 10,000 mature individuals, with a decreasing population trend, and no single population numbering more than 1,000 adults. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 2008. The population is threatened by large–scale deforestation and commercial poaching for the wildlife trade. Its body parts are offered for decoration and clothing, though it is legally protected in most range countries. The clouded leopard has been kept in zoological gardens since the early 20th century. Captive breeding programs were initiated in the 1980s. In captivity, the clouded leopard has an average lifespan of 11 years. • 33. Christiansen, a zoologist at the University of Aalborg in Denmark, argued in 2012 that the clouded leopard — a mid-sized cat that prowls the tropical forests of Indonesia — has relatively elongated teeth and shows a great deal of similarity to true sabercats. Given a few million years, might the saber-toothed descendants of today’s clouded leopards slash at the throats of mid-sized herbivores of the future? Smilodon is a genus of the extinct machairodont subfamily of the felids. It is one of the most famous prehistoric mammals and the best known saber-toothed cat. Although commonly known as the saber-toothed tiger, it was not closely related to the tiger or other modern cats. Smilodon lived in the Americas during the Pleistocene epoch (2.5 mya – 10,000 years ago). The genus was named in 1842 based on fossils from Brazil; the generic name means "scalpel" or "two-edged knife" combined with "tooth". Three species are recognized today: S. gracilis, S. fatalis, and S. populator. The two latter species were probably descended from S. gracilis, which itself probably evolved from Megantereon. The hundreds of individuals obtained from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles constitute the largest collection of Smilodon fossils. Overall, Smilodon was more robustly built than any extant cat, with particularly well-developed forelimbs and exceptionally long upper canine teeth. Its jaw had a bigger gape than that of modern cats, and its upper canines were slender and fragile, being adapted for precision killing. S. gracilis was the smallest species at 55 to 100 kg (120 to 220 lb) in weight. S. fatalis had a weight of 160 to 280 kg (350 to 620 lb) and height of 100 cm (39 in). Both of these species are mainly known from North America, but remains from South America have also been attributed to them. S. populator from South America was the largest species, at 220 to 436 kg (485 to 961 lb) in weight and 120 cm (47 in) in height, and was among the largest known felids. The coat pattern of Smilodon is unknown, but it has been artistically restored with plain or spotted patterns. In North America, Smilodon hunted large herbivores such as bison and camels, and it remained successful even when encountering new prey species in South America. Smilodon is thought to have killed its prey by holding it still with its forelimbs and biting it, but it is unclear in what manner the bite itself was delivered. Scientists debate whether Smilodon had a social or a solitary lifestyle; analysis of modern predator behavior as well as of Smilodon's fossil remains could be construed to lend support to either view. Smilodon probably lived in closed habitats such as forests and bush, which would have provided cover for ambushing prey. Smilodon died out at the same time that most North and South American megafauna disappeared, about 10,000 years ago. Its reliance on large animals has been proposed as the cause of its extinction, along with climate change and competition with other species, but the exact cause is unknown. Great Lakes gray wolf (biologicaldiversity.org) Jonathan G. Way wrote that the Great Lakes wolf are the best type of wolf to put in eastern Turtle Island/North America. http://www.easterncoyoteresearch.com/downloads/Coywolf.pdf Scientists, wildlife managers, and laypeople should now appropriately classify the five wild canid groups found in North America belonging to the genus Canis as: (1) western coyote; (2) eastern coyote or coywolf (east of longitude 80° which includes New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ontario, and Quebec); (3) eastern and red wolf (C. lycaon, including C. rufus; drawn separately on the diagram); (4) Great Lakes wolf, which is a hybrid between eastern wolves and gray wolves (C. lupus × C. lycaon or C. lycaon × C. lupus); and (5) gray wolf. Three possible additional genetic and morphological groupings consist of the Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi), the mid- Atlantic coyote, and the southeastern coyote. Wolves in the Southwest are possibly the remnant of an early expansion of the gray wolf into North America, while research in the mid-Atlantic (Virginia) area indicates that coyotes there are a product of hybridization between northeastern coyotes/coywolves from the north and western coyotes from the west; hence they are an
  • 46. intermediate form between eastern coyotes and western coyotes. Mid-Atlantic and southeastern coyotes also have domestic dog genetic influence, and the southeastern coyote may also have red wolf and/or gray wolf influence as well but, overall, is more western coyote-like compared to their northeastern cousins. With this ‘Canis soup’ of different but closely related species (there is gene flow from lupus to lycaon and lycaon to latrans), distinct species status for any canid complicates conservation efforts, especially in eastern North America. Recent investigations acknowledge the importance of hybridization among closely related species and in the case of eastern wolves, there is a need for managed introgression that focusses on preserving any eastern wolf genetic material in any genome regardless of their potential mosaic ancestry composition. If such an effort prioritizes and maintains individuals that carry admixed genomes, as has been suggested, then more common animals like the eastern coyote would be an important source of greater genetic variation and potential adaptive capacity for rare canines. Interestingly, one of the biggest questions remaining for biologists to answer, is which wolf should be allowed to return to the region? And it’s not as if that decision can even be conclusively determined by scientists. We originally thought the larger gray wolf (called timber wolf in this region) inhabited the Northeast, but research over the past two decades by Paul Wilson and Brad White’s team at Trent University indicates that it was the eastern wolf that used to live there, with a strong likelihood that gray-eastern wolf hybrids, similar to the ‘Great Lakes wolves’ of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, also resided in much of the Northeast. It could be argued that gray wolves, or their hybrids, may be a more appropriate source for an active wolf restoration, as they would probably not mate with eastern coyotes due to size differences and the fact that they are more distantly related to both coyotes and eastern wolves. You see, eastern wolves and coyotes evolved in North America, whereas gray wolves in the Old World. The gray wolf may be more of an ecologically effective predator of moose, which in recent years have been increasing in range in the Northeast. However, it may be difficult to find a source of suitable gray wolves in the East as the neighboring wolves in central Ontario and eastern Quebec are eastern wolves or eastern-gray wolf hybrids. Given all of these influences, the final chapter of canid recovery in the Northeast has yet to be written. In fact, the USFWS and the Northeastern states have chosen to do nothing, which is illegal given the mandates to recover wolves in the area. My opinion, given all of the evidence, is that the Great Lakes wolf type would be the ideal wolf for this region. It is bigger and certainly more wolf-like than eastern coyotes and has a low likelihood of hybridizing with them. It is also found within dispersing distance of the Northeast and would likely survive well there, similar to the ~4,000 currently residing in wild in the U.S. Great Lakes states.

They survived on a mixed diet and obtained food by browsing and grazing, somewhat similar to their distant relatives, modern elephants, but probably with greater emphasis on browsing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_forest_elephant The African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is one of the two living African elephant species. • 65. Rewilding Canada Blog: Lost Giants: Large Canadian Mammals That We Cannot Replace (rewildcanada.blogspot.com) Sloths There was one giant ground sloth species present across Canada, from the plains to the arctic. This was Jefferson's ground sloth (Megalonyx jefersoni), which stood about three metres tall and weighed a thousand kilograms. Like elephants, ground sloths were major environmental engineers, tearing down trees and browsing leaves. The closest living relatives of the ground sloths are the tree sloths, which are very small and in no way the ecological equivalent of their giant cousins. The Americans have discussed all sorts of animals as proxies for their ground sloth species, including rhinoceroses, anteaters, and giraffes, none of which are practical or even viable here, due to climatic restraints. It is hoped that the takins being considered as woodox proxies will also fill some of the role of the ground sloth, due to their ability to rear up on their hind legs in order to reach leaves. It is not a perfect solution, but such things are rare. Also, we should put the Sichuan takin/Tibetan takin in eastern Turtle Island/North America to serve as a proxy for the woodox. Also, we should put the Sichuan takin/Tibetan takin in eastern Kanata/Canada to serve as a proxy for the woodox. Megafauna in the Forests of the Northeast | Pleistocene Rewilding (boards.net) Megafauna in the Forests of the Northeast Bootherium bombifrons, the woodox, was a more southern relative of the living muskox (Ovibos moschatus). The muskox tribe is closely related to sheep and goats, and it is from this group that I will select a replacement. The living muskox is too highly adapted to colder climates to be used farther south, and its diet includes more grazing, and less browsing, than the woodox’s did. Based on diet, climatic suitability, and size, the best possible replacement would the takin (Budorcas taxicolor). The takin is of a similar weight to the woodox, and has a similar diet of tree leaves and shrubs. For a long time, it was thought that the takin was much more closely related to muskoxen than others of the sheep tribe, due to morphological similarities. Genetic evidence has since placed them farther apart, but it still possesses many useful traits to make it a solid proxy. The Sichuan subspecies (Budorcas taxicolor tibetana) is probably the most available subspecies, and they have proven able to adapt to our vegetation and climate, as there is a breeding herd of at least 30 animals in the Wilds Safari Park in Ohio. Animals could be sourced from this and other captive populations to create new wild populations in eastern North America. Takins would help to control tree and shrub species through

  • 73. Megafauna in the Forests of the Northeast | Pleistocene Rewilding (boards.net) Equus caballus complicatus¸ the North American horse. Once considered its own species, all Pleistocene horses from the continent have since been grouped into just two, the stilt- legged Equus francisci, and the still extant Equus caballus, today represented by wild and domestic horses. Equus caballus complicates was of the latter species, and so would have been very similar to a modern horse. There are only two living subspecies of the caballine horse; the takhi (Equus caballus przewalski) or eastern wild horse, and the domestic horse (Equus caballus caballus) which is descended from the western wild horse (Equus caballus ferus). The takhi is the only truly wild, as opposed to feral, horse in existence, making it the best choice from a behavioural and conservation standpoint. However, it is predominantly adapted to steppe habitats, and may not be as well suited to the wet, forested conditions found here as maybe some of its domestic relatives would be. It has been shown however, from various breeding populations in Europe and North America, that takhis can be very adaptable to similar conditions. With this knowledge, I would recommend that they be used. There are many captive animals on the continent, from which to start a new population. Horses are useful for creating mosaic pastures, which are allow a greater diversity of animals to utilize a smaller area of habitat. The seriemas are the sole living members of the small bird family Cariamidae, which is also the only surviving lineage of the order Cariamiformes. Once believed to be related to cranes, they have been placed near the falcons, parrots and passerines, as well as the extinct Phorusrhacidae.[1][2] The seriemas are large, long-legged territorial birds that range from 70–90 cm (28–35 in) in length. They live in grasslands, savanna, dry woodland and open forests of Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. There are two species of seriemas, the red-legged seriema (Cariama cristata) and the black- legged seriema (Chunga burmeisteri).[3] Names for these birds in the Tupian languages are variously spelled as siriema, sariama, and çariama, and mean "crested".[4] Like Reply The red-legged seriema and the black-legged seriema should also be in Canada because so they can serve as proxies for Bathornithidae.
