PROJECT ON: Organic waste Composter.
Composting at home!
4. INTRODUCTION
Mankind’s Need
Today, We are facing the problems regarding
the waste control. On the household level, a lot
amount of organic waste gets generated everyday.
Why throw this stuff away when it could be used in
yard and gardens?
So, there is good way with us to handle the waste by
converting it into compost!
8. CONSTRUCTION AND MECHANISM
Basically, the model consists of three compartments as follows:
- Cutting and mixing section
Blades mounted on shaft
- Heating Evaporation outlet section
Nichrome wire and Mica sheet Assembly
- Composting section
Using micro organisms.
9. CONSTRUCTION AND MECHANISM
In the first compartment, i.e. cutting section, the waste from
inlet is to be cut and mixed with the help of blades mounted on
shaft. . To one end of the shaft, a handle is fixed, such that the
shaft rotates when the handle rotates.
In heating section, the heating element used is nichrome wire
wound on mica sheet.
In compost section, the dry material from heating section gets
mixed with “Bioclean compost” which has microorganisms
helping to convert it into compost.
10. The container acts as housing for the assembly, provides
mounting holes for shaft and inserting plates. The plates are
used between each of two sections.
The shaft of material MS having diameter 20mm. It is
threaded. At both end of shaft, it is turned to 15mm for bearing
mounting. The shaft is having holes at both ends for the
purpose of weight reduction. The shaft is threaded for the
purpose of blade mounting in order to fix lock nuts.
The blades that are to be used are wood cutter wheel, with
OD 100mm. And, ID is 20mm. These are used for cutting of
waste to be decomposed.
11. The lock nuts are used for proper fixing of blades on shaft i.e.
it prevents axial movement of blades when in action.
Net is used in between cutting and heating plate. The net
allows crushed waste into next section.
The ‘C’ shaped wire frame placed on conducting thin plate is
used to collect residue of heated waste, helps to transfer to
composting section.
At the end base of container, a tray is placed with bioclean
compost which helps for fast decomposition of waste. The
bioclean compost itself is odourless process. The process
takes 7-8 hours for compost formation. The micro-organisms
in the bio clean compost have capability of sustaining at high
temperatures up to 150o C.
12. ABOUT BIOCLEAN COMPOST
BIO-CLEAN is.. a blend of bacteria and enzymes.
The bacteria are natural, not genetically-engineered.
Within an hour after pouring the bacteria into the drain, the
bacteria begin to eat their way into the waste that has
accumulated on the sides and top of the drain pipe. This is
their natural food.
The bacteria in BIO-CLEAN, when mixed with water they
come to life in about 30 minutes. In the meantime the
enzymes are breaking down the waste. They are very fast. In
fact, they work on contact. When the bacteria revive they are
hungry. Each one eats its weight of waste every minute - and
they never sleep! As a result of eating and growing they start
to multiply through cell division. Their number will double
every 30 minutes under favourable conditions.
14. Problems faced And Solutions
High cost of motor and coupling for transferring power to shaft.
Winding of nichrome wire around mica sheet.
Compost that can sustain for 60 to 70 degree
Mounting of blades on shaft
Methods tried out:
1. Using grub screw.
2.Using Lock nuts. (Preferred)
Choice of container:
1.Metallic container.
2.Plastic container.(Preferred)
Choice of heating element:
1.Nichrome wire and Mica sheet combination.
2.Water heater. (Preferred)
15. Uniform Heating of waste:
Since we are using water heater to provide heat there is chance of uniform
heating .In order to overcome this problem we have preferred thin
conducting plate having uniform thickness.
Transfer of waste from heating compartment to compost section:
1.Tilting of conducting plates
2.Provide sliding mechanism to plates
3.Using ‘c’ plates (Preferred)
Micro-organism sustainability at high temperature:
Using Bioclean compost this problem is solved wherein micro-organisms
sustain up to 150 C.
16. Activities
1st week of August- Deciding of topic for mini project
22nd august- finalising the topic organic waste composter
-schematic diagram
28th august –Engineering Drawing
12th September- Finalising container searching, heating element, mixing
blades, motor specifications
3rd October - Selection of material like blades, nichrome wire ,mica sheet.
13th October – Selection of micro-organism compost.
17. Future Scope:
Automation in the assembly.
In today’s world, everything is automated in order to make the things easy.
In our assembly, there is a lot of scope for automation such as
1.Timers used for action time of motors to rotate shaft.
2.Tranfer of waste from one section to another section using automated moving
plates.
3.Buzzer system after completion of process after specific interval of time.
Solar energy as source of heating section
To heat the heating elements, solar energy can be used at inputs with the help
of solar panels.
