• A chemical reaction is a process generally characterized by a
chemical change in which the starting materials(reactants) are
different from the products
• It is a process whereby one or more substances (reactants) are
converted to one or more different substances (products)

3. PROPERTIES OF CHEMICAL
REACTIONS
• Chemical reactions have properties and those properties are divided into two, we
have:
• Chemical and
• Physical properties
• A chemical property is a property of a substance relative to its chemical reactivity
(undergoes a chemical change)
• A physical property is a characteristic of matter that can be observed and measured
without changing its chemical identity (undergoes a physical change)

• Oxidation-reduction reaction
• Oxidation-reduction reaction occur when reactants undergo a change
in their in their oxidation state
• Synthesis reaction
• These are reactions that occur when two different atoms or molecules
interact to form a different molecule/compound
• Two or more simple reactants react to form a more complex product

• Analysis reaction
• This type of reaction occurs when a compound is broken down into smaller chemical
species, it is often called a decomposition reaction
• Metathesis reaction (double replacement)
• This reaction occurs when two compounds exchange bonds or ions to form different
compounds

• Precipitation reaction
• Precipitation reaction is a form of double replacement equation, it
occurs when two molecules exchange its ions to form an insoluble
precipitate
• Acid-base reaction
• An acid-base reaction is also a type of a metathesis reaction between
an acid and a base where the hydronium ion in the acid(H+) reacts
with the hydroxide ion(OH-) in the base to form water and salt

9. CONCLUSION
• Acid-base reactions fall under metathesis reaction because there is also an
exchange in ions that is occurring
• Precipitation reactions are also metathesis reactions because two or more ionic
compounds exchange ions to form an insoluble substance , a substance that is
insoluble in water .
