Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) belongs to family Anacardiaceae is
considered to be native of tropical America (South-East Brazil) .
Cashew trees can grow from sea level to an altitude of 1000 m
The tree produces a soft, shiny, and juicy fruit known as cashew apple which
bears a single‐seeded nut in its bottom covered with a hard gray shell.

7. Nut shell
Cashew nut is a high value edible nut. It yields
two “Oils” one of these found, between the seed
coat (or pericarp) and the nuts, is called the
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL).
It is not a triglyceride and contains a high
proportion of phenolic compound. It is used in
industry as a raw material for brake lining
compounds, as a water proofing agent, a
preservative and in the manufacturing of paints
and plastics.

Cashew nuts types or cashew Kernels varieties are graded into white/scorched
wholes,pieces,splits,butts etc.. depending on the shape,size & colour of the kernel.
The cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale) is a short, stocky, low-spreading,
evergreen tropical tree.
Different kinds of cashew nuts types
W – 180, is the ‘ King of Cashew ‘ – They are larger in size and very expensive.
W – 210, are popularly known as ‘ Jumbo ‘ nuts.
W – 240, it is an attractive grade which is reasonably priced.
W – 320, are the most popular among cashew kernels and highest in terms of
availability, worldwide.
W – 450, are the smallest and cheapest white whole kernels and hence the favorite
among low priced whole grades.

Vietnam remains world’s No 1 exporter of cashews
Specifically, Vietnam exported 260,000 tons of cashew nuts, up 1.1 percent,
according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on
Thursday.

Major cashew nut producing countries are Vietnam, Nigeria, India, Côte d'Ivoire
and Benin.
India and Vietnam are the two major producers and exporters of cashew,
accounting for 40% and 33% market shares, respectively.
Brazil is another major exporter that supplies to the United States. The largest
cashew importers in terms of value are Vietnam, India, and the US. These
countries together account for 85% of the total cashew import share, which
signifies a concentrated nature of import trends.
Other importers of cashew kernel are European Union, China, United Arab
Emirates, Japan and Saudi Arabia.

Increasing quantity and quality of cashew kernel and cashew by-product
processing.
Creating stable business relationships between farmer groups, processors, buyers
and retailer.
Organizing key stakeholders of the sector at national and regional levels around
shared goals and advocate policies that favor cashew production and processing.
