1. The Project.
D14 Games requested me to create character concept visualisations for a game influenced by steam
punk known by the name 'wings of Morpheus’; my task assigned by the company was to create any
one of three characters. After consideration and my own personal preference, I chose Dr Nicholas
Phbetor.
Research.
Before starting my work I conducted a research study process to help enhance my work, in order to
do this to the best of my potential I decided to research more into Steam Punk to review the sort of
costumes, communication in terms of body language. Once I acquired documents, information and
images to create a mood board I was satisfied with my progress in terms of my finding. At this point I
was confident I could begin working.
Weaknesses.
I did engage in one practical issue that slowed down the process, I had never used Photoshop
before, which inevitably meant I was going to encounter some difficulties as I had no experience in
terms of what any of the tools functions were or any shortcuts which would have saved me time. My
lack of experience meant that I engaged in an issue which set me back merged my work and then
saved it, this left all my work compiled, which meant I couldn't change it. This was very time
consuming for myself and affected my project in terms of production.
Strengths.
However, luckily I encountered this problem at an early age which meant I could improve. Also, I
knew this work was not the best I could achieve and planned to re start when I had more experience
with the program in order to ensure the work is to the best of my ability. I thought that my attention
to detail was good as adding shadows helped my character looking realistic. My strengths with this
project was that although I had a few issues, I planned ahead before I even started the project which
meant that although I had issues, I would not fall behind and could still attempt to improve. Showing
that I have good time management and can think in a professional, mature manor.
Improvements.
I understand that I could improve this type of work by spending more time studying and focusing on
the program that is required for the projects, in this circumstance the program I needed was
Photoshop. I will study the tools and shortcuts of a program when given the project task in order to
ensure that when I begin working, I will not have a time consuming issue of figuring out the
functions of a program. When I restarted I continued drawing more so that I could create ideas to
start fresh. This helped me as I could put the drawings into illustrator and go over my work. This
assisted me in viewing the improvements from the previous work and my newly started work.
2. Software.
The software I needed to use was Photo Shop, due to my lack of experience and knowledge of this
software, I did not know what the tools were for until I used them which took a lot of trial and error,
making the beginning of my project production slightly more time consuming than necessary. The
software that I used was difficult at first, as mentioned, I'd never used it before, which made finding
tools and shortcuts hard. This also occurred in illustrator. Next time I will take time outside of the
classroom before the project needs to be started and focus on how the program works and how I
can use it to my advantage.
What I have learnt.
Overall, by the end of this project I was able to use photo shop and illustrator at a good level,
understanding and finding the tools got easier after time and practice, the shortcuts became helpful
when I felt i needed to speed up the process of my work. I learnt that I should not merge work until I
am completely done and that I do not want to make any changes. This shows that within the time of
this project I have acquired a new set of skills with the software that i was required to use which is
definitely going to help me in the future.
Criteria.
I am confident that my character has met the criteria that is required, in terms of looking realistic.
Overall, I don't believe I can make any improvements as I did restart my work when I felt I was
slacking which means all the improvements I wanted to make were made at the beginning of the
production. However, I do believe I need to focus on managing my time a little better, with that
being said, I did figure out how to use shortcuts which helped to save time. In conclusion I feel very
happy and accomplished in terms of my improvement and development, I feel I have progressed
very much so since starting this project and my understanding of software and means of
professional production has developed.
