1. AFFS
Airborne Fire Fighting System for the Hercules
Next Generation Roll-on, Roll-off Fire Fighting System
AFFS was developed from a U.S. Forest Service requirement for the next
generation Roll-on/Roll-off firefighting system for the Lockheed Martin C-130.
AFFS is a modular Airborne Fire Fighting System which enables cargo/utility
aircraft to not only combat Wildland and Urban Fires, but may also be used
for chemical and biological remediation.
Roll-on, Roll-off Functional Design
The system consists of a Forward Pallet, Center Pallet, and an Aft Pallet.
• Forward Pallet consists of two electrically driven high pressure
compressors that charge the Center Pallet storage tanks.
• Center Pallet consists of the 3000 gallon Stainless Steel tank and cradle
with twin pneumatic storage tanks and the pneumatic pressure
regulation system.
• Aft Pallet consists of an S-Duct discharge nozzle and two Loadmaster
troop seats. The Loadmaster provides the drop selection from the Aft
Pallet, both Pilot and Loadmaster have the ability to make the drop
command.
The AFFS utilizes the 463L cargo handling system and routes the S-Duct
discharge nozzle through the rear left troop door. A specialized door plug is
installed allowing the rear cargo door and ramp to remain closed. With the
AFFS installed the aircraft can maintain pressurized conditions when
conducting fire fighting operations
AFFS total system capacity is 3400 gallons

Airborne Fire Fighting System for the Hercules
Versatility
AFFS can discharge its entire capacity in less than 5 seconds or drop multiple
quantities at different coverage levels in a single flight. The addition of a fire
fighting foam tank allows Operators to use water or retardant to fight fires. The
S-Duct discharge nozzle location and design minimize aircraft retardant
contamination, reducing maintenance costs.
Operation
• Loadmaster installs AFFS,
Door Plug and S-duct.
• Center Pallet tank is
serviced with fluid.
• Pneumatic storage tanks
are serviced by onboard
Forward Pallet.
• Loadmaster makes drop
selection from Aft Pallet
• Drop delivery of up to
3,400 gallons from Center
Pallet.
• The Forward Pallet
recharges the pneumatic
system in-flight.
